I'm fine with the trade for Claypool. George Pickens had basically taken over his role in Pittsburgh. Claypool gives them a tall big bodied receiver that can go up and get the ball better than guys like St. Brown or Harry. It also probably allows Mooney to play more out of the slot going forward (starting with the Detroit game Week 10 as I doubt Claypool plays a lot this weekend vs. the Dolphins). And if teams decide to run bracket coverage on Mooney, they can always run Claypool on a vertical route deep.

On a separate note, it wouldn't surprise me if this move was also made as a way to screw the Packers over from getting a WR they desperately need.

Some of the other moves made today:

-Hockenson to the Vikings
-Bradley Chubb and a pick to the Dolphins for Chase Edmonds and 2 picks
-Falcons trade Calvin Ridley to the Jags
-Jeff Wilson Jr. from the 49ers to the Dolphins
-Bills and Colts swapping Zach Moss for Nyheim Hines with picks also being involved

This may also explain the reason the Bears made the move for Claypool:

I looked it up on Spotrac earlier tonight and the top free agent WRs are going to be names like Nelson Agholor, Sterling Shepard, DJ Chark, Randall Cobb, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Jakobi Meyers.
Yeah, that's not a bad argument.

And while in a vacuum Roquan Smith and a top 2nd traded for Claypool, a lower 2nd, a 5th, and a throwaway depth piece LB doesn't seem like great value, the opportunity costs of extending those two main pieces does play into it.

It's frustrating though, because while the Bears now have an NFL level receiving corps (still not an above average one, but in the neighborhood of average as opposed to the overgrown practice squad they were playing with), and always had an NFL level running back room, their laughable farce of an offensive line doesn't really give them a chance to do serious development of where they want to go.

The strength of the next FA class is o-line. So, you’ll probably see them sign at least two premium FA o-lineman and then add another interesting skill position peace in the draft.

Don’t forget that last game was only the first game where we got to see Henry and we still haven’t seen Pringle, who should be available soon.

If you're looking at just tackles, the top two OT that will be available will be Orlando Brown Jr. and Jack Conklin along with George Fant. Best available guard will probably be guys like Justin Pugh or Roger Saffold. I'd be surprised if they went after a C like Rodney Hudson or Mitch Morse.

One stud left tackle would really make a dramatic difference to the whole offensive unit. Ideally more than that, but you want to maximize that impact and the Bears have the cap space to do it.

And that has a double benefit, you give Fields a real offense to play with, but you're also creating a framework to give your 2024 QB more of a chance than Fields got if things don't work out in 2023.

I think there will likely be wailing and gnashing of teeth next year, I go back to Mike Martz' statement about when you tell a young QB to go make plays without anything around him he'll do stupid stuff and learn bad habits just trying to survive, but I can't help but admire the kid's toughness and willingness to put himself on the line for this mess, I'm rooting for him.

The Bears are only allowed to win 3 more games this season or my pocketbook takes a hit. Am I safe? I'm nervous as hell!

Bears down 21-17 at half. Game has went about as expected. Defense didn't really stop the Dolphins until the final drive of the half. Offense looking a lot more dynamic as they have the past few weeks.
