For all the board members who thought our athletes were getting 6 or 7 figure NIL payouts all you have to do is look at Oscar @ Kentucky getting $2M to stay another year and Pack going to Miami for $400k/year. My guess is Kofi was offered low 6 figures (still great compared to nothing) and decided to get on with his chosen career. These endorsements are nice but not that size

I’m not sure the source of your information, but it was widely reported that $1M was the NIL package for Kofi to stay.

I have somewhat tongue-in-cheek proposed just going minor league professional sports, where the teams would be privately owned, and rent team names and mascots, rent facilities, and rent stadia for the best deal they could get. Then there could be a transfer portal where teams could switch colleges, the good teams going to the universities that fill the stands with the biggest gate, concessions, licensing potential. Then the teams could hire the best players who wouldn't be students, no entrance requirements, no classroom, even no limit on time on the team. I'm sure that a lot of people would still be saying "Roll Tide," but "I-L-L-"? For me, the passion, even the following, would be in severe jeopardy.
Sounds kind of like Milli Vanilli.

This is something I've wondered. A large part of my faithfulness is that I have faith in the student-athletes being just that. I remember back in the later sixties football players living in the dorms. The concept of "student-athlete" was the real deal. If wouldn't be unreasonable to have one in class with you. I've always felt that I wasn't just a fan of the Fighting Illini, but that I was/am still an "Illini for Life." I have a cardboard cutout saying that. I've always, at least since becoming an adult, felt like for pro sports, it was "them" winning. With Illini sports, it's "us."
Appears there are two NIL threads going. The concept of player unionization came up in the other one. Talk about killing the faith.

FWIW, the phrase "student-athletes" was coined by the NCAA in the mid-50s in order to deny worker's compensation death benefits to the family of a college football player who died as a result of a football injury.

Twas me. Here's the thing, it was part of a conversation about the supposed harms to athletes if they are deemed employees, specifically getting fired. That's something unions can help with. It strikes me that the anti-players-getting-paid camp seems to really care about player well-being, so long as said well-being doesn't involve any agency for the players to have a say.

Didn't want to call you out personally juiceman as I meant no ill will. Appreciate all the reasoned discussion!

Just having mental images of players filing union grievances over playing time or other perceived slights. Nothing would turn me away faster.

Widely reported yet unable to provide any LINK to reputable news source

"it was widely reported that Captain Kangaroo is joining Jon Scheyers staff at Duke to provide some maturity"

Where did you read this "widely reported" fact about Kofi being offered $2M in NIL to stay? Only place I saw it was on internet bulletin boards like this one. Kentucky $2M NIL to Oscar was on Sports Illustrated. Why didn't Sports Illustrated report that Kofi turned down same amount? Because it never happened.

"I don't believe something" and "it's not true" are fundamentally different statements.

Case in point:

So then since no specific amount was reported, is it your conclusion that Kofi was not offered any NIL?

You reported no sources for saying Kofi was in the low 6 figures yet demand sources you consider reputable. Tate and Werner reported the 1M figure along with insiders here. If you don’t want to believe it fine. I still don’t see your “sources”. Actually I don’t care, so thanks for the fun discussion.

Seems like the easy loophole here is to say we’re not talking about staying at the school, we’re talking about renegotiating the NIL deal. I feel like NIL deals will start to tier, paying more for each year the player stays.
Yeah, and I think it'll be hard to make a rule that NIL deals can't be contingent on staying at a school. If I'm a business in Champaign, it's of no benefit to me to have a sponsorship from a guy who plays at St. John's, to use a recent example. So not allowing these deals to be tied to staying at a school will effectively rule out multi-year deals, which will also kneecap that as a solution for reining in the transfer market.

How are most athletes paid NIL money?? Is the money given directly from the (donor, business, etc) or is the money forwarded to the University and then distributed to the athlete? I doubt the University actually gets involved in handling the money....more like a negotiator or go between the business and athlete....but who knows.....also if a business or donor gives NIL money to an athlete do they claim that as a business expense to claim for tax purposes....seems like a lot of really gray area here...but suppose it was that way before NIL....just asking for a friend

I should remember the details better, but it has to go thru a 3rd party like open endorse. I don’t know if those rules are state by state or not.

Link to Tate and Werner article?
I put several links on my post to the only public information about Kofi and other Illini basketball players NIL deal. None of these sound remotely like 7 figure endorsements.

Glad to get the Jeff Johnson link. Looks like he started a newsletter about 8 months ago about Illini sports. It appears he also writes for News Gazzette. Suprising such a big story about Kofi NIL payments would not be published by the News Gazette.

I think it's a non-story if Kofi makes it in the NBA. If he doesn't get drafted or winds up in the G league making significantly less, then we'll probably see some stories about missed financial opportunities (unfortunately).

We should all want him to make it because it looks great for Illinois to have guys in the league. There are plenty of skeptics, but I think at this time it's best for any traditional media who are pro-Illini to focus strictly on the positives: Kofi's contributions to our resurgence, pre-draft workouts, etc.

Kofi showed remarkable improvement - HS->fr->soph->jr

in HS he was 2nd or 3rd option and just jogged up the floor getting garbage baskets
FR year he gave us good rebounding and defense along with some inside scoring 13 ppg 9 rbg 53% FG 66 FT
Soph - really improved his footwork and inside moves, was in much better shape 18 ppg 10 rbg 65% FG 50% FT
Jr - Learned to be the man, worked on guarding outside of lane, passing out of triple teams, improving FT%, carried the team on offense 21 ppg 11 rbg 59% FG 68% FT

NBA Kofi - he will do it!!!
-- in better shape so he can run the floor, and run faster, improve quick jump
-- learn to make outlet passes to trigger the fast break
-- improve agility to guard Jokic, Towns and Embid at 3 point line when needed
-- they won't be able to double and triple team him in NBA so more baskets in the paint
