Illinois is expected to do the same as was announced a few weeks back. I’m not finding a link off hand. Iowa and Wisconsin have said they expect to do the same, but I don’t know if it is “official”. I fully expect every B10 team to do likewise.

Most notably...there is a shift in power in college athletics that is unprecedented and which will have many unintended consequences (ex, it could set back women's sports due to revenue disparities). Also, found it interesting that author says many college athletes will have an incentive *not* to turn pro, as they will likely have more money-making opportunities at the collegiate level.

Agreed. It seems that the thrust of this legislation is control. Far better for an enlightened AD to have more control over NIL stuff than not.

The disdain I have for Saban has only grown in recent years when it has become clear that he strongly favors a status quo where he maintains absolute power and can go shill for insurance companies on TV without the athletes having any rights.

Indeed. But even just pausing for a moment, when in the history of Illinois AD’s have we ever had one that clearly had an impact on the state’s legislature? Perhaps whoever is in charge at NU benefits too and perhaps this was co-sponsored, but we are probably the two schools that benefit the most (and likely us more). I can’t imagine too many other sources for this initiative. Carving a path to Springfield takes a seriously concerted and coordinated effort.

Universities (especially large public ones) typically have well-oiled lobbying teams, especially for lobbying their own state governments that control large chunks of their budgets. There's a pretty good chance the university played a hefty role in selling this and Whitman probably has his fingerprints on it to some degree. But how directly he was involved likely depends on which legislatures were its champions. Some may be more receptive to the athletic argument, others more about fairness to the students.

Yeah, he's pissed because his totally gamed system is dead. There's a new paradigm and, surprise, he's not happy about it. Boo hoo! And Bama still has it gamed, but not as much as it did.

As long as the school doesn’t promise a recruit x amount if you play here I think you are within the vague NCAA guidelines

What will be interesting is when schools say I can’t say how much you will make but this is how much our average football/basketball player make Also we have helped our superstars make this much

It is part of recruiting. Just as much as other tangible things like education location history etc

I think removing the language barring a school from being able to arrange these NIL deals literally puts the schools in the driver seat. I think at this point, the only thing a school can’t do is actually pay a salary or any monies directly from school accounts.
