Northwestern 72, Illinois 68 OT POSTGAME

Need to start playing some tougher non-neutral site road games early in the season. It's not helpful to sit at home and feast on bad teams and then expect to win road games when it matters.

He initiated the offense well , but that missed wide open 3, two missed free throws and throwing up that shot in OT in traffic with 3 NU players lost us the game.

He was the only one doing anything on offense at the end of the game. The last possession was bad. Just like alstorks possession was bad. TJL showed up today.

We could have clearly used those 2 FTs from Lucas, but, at least tonight, he was the closest thing to a go-to guy we have at the end of a game. Hope he keeps up the aggressive play.

Alstork played some great defense late in that game.

Alstork defense is what is keeping him in the game, his offense is mostly non existent, based on the hype coming in.

That said, I like our team chances, because if BU can get Alstork to buy in on defense which he seems to have done, when he came here to "supposedly" showcase his offense to the NBA...well impressive.

I dig the quicker pace. But if we don't get a shot up in 7 seconds, the final 8-30 seconds of our offense is pretty ugly.
yeah....short bench for Cats and we could have run them out of the gym. chose not to for some reason.

NO excuse whatsoever for Smith not to play more. Continuing with offense for defense substitution of AJ was absurd during OT. If he fouls out at that point he fouls out but you have to have the nations leading 3 point shooter on the floor.

Fouls would be the biggest reason, and DaMonte and TeJon are both playing as well if not better, so there probably is a reason.:chief:

AJ I agree 100% on though!

Dude... If you really want to point out disappointments, it's all of our upperclassmen, less Jordan.

Black, Finke and Alstork....those are supposed to be the go to guys on a young team. They're nowhere to be found. That's the issue right now.

Im OK with Black, personally. Don't think of him as an offensive superstar and think he is at least as good as my rating of him. But Finke and Alstork? So far? Yeah, not so much.

We're not a tournament team this year but that doesn't mean we have to be disappointed this season as fans. A lot of good things happening. They said it during broadcast, we return virtually every player next year. Things will get better. This year's about growth.

Not sure you can lump Black in there....the guy has made leaps and bounds over last years foul/cheap shot defense plays.

He's the closest thing to a leader that this team has.

Not putting it on TJL, but he with other PG options that can shoot free throws dependably, he should not be in the game at clutch time and certainly not attempting the last shot. I would foul him in a heartbeat at that point, as he will not make two. Any of the frosh guards would be a better choice IMHO, but not really trying to question the coaches. TJL is simply not a confident free thrower and the others are. Otherwise, I really liked what TJL did on the floor tonight...tough kid who plays hard for his team every minute. But he has to improve from the FFL or sit in the stretch.

Screw great effort. We need to start winning some of these close games. NW MADE FT WHEN IT COUNTED. Our players still don't have the confidence to win. I hope BU changes that. The more I think about it the lack of a to at then of overtime burns me up. That was a pure Groce move and we all remember how well those worked.

We were so bad against a set defense. Why does this surprise you?

None of us have a clue why Smith didn't play. I'm sure BU has his reasons. What I will say is that he currently isn't showing that he can play good, aggressive D without silly fouls.

Yes he missed two free throws tonight, but seriously... Tejon plays way better defense, runs the offense better than frazier and tonight took it on his shoulders to score down the stretch. Frazier will be good but he is getting pushed around. Needs to get stronger.

Trust me I'm not disappointed in Finke because He's not shown me he's a B1G caliber player. Disappointed in TJL because he can be better. On to the next one!

Good call on Finke. He'd be a nice roll player on a really good team(ala Jack Ingram). Unfortunately, this is what Groce left us.

Smith didn't play because AJ, Williams, Alstork, and Lucas offered us the best defenders at the end of the game. Smith is a good player and will be great eventually, but these other guys play much better defense than he does right now. My only beef with Underwood is not calling a timeout when we had the ball just before Lucas got triple teamed. I hate that Alstork and Lucas both forced a shot. I felt a drawn up play to get A.J the ball and to shoot a 3 to win the game would've been the best scenario. Finke absolutely played horrible tonight and has to give us more if we want to win some games. 2 pts. and 4 rebounds for how many minutes he played is horrendous.

Tejon had a pretty good game, I just thought the missed three (and their made three) along with the two missed free throws were the difference in the game. He made some strong moves though, so we're not even in the game without him.

Smith didn't necessarily do anything wrong, but he was being passive with the ball in the last few minutes of his playing time (think Jaylon Tate). He's usually not like that, just think he was kind of mentally taken out of the game with the early foul trouble and getting cold on the bench. He'll be fine, just wasn't his game tonight.

Hopefully we get a defensive big next year. We could be looking at one of the best defensive units in the country for end of game situations with Lucas, Williams, Nichols, Smith and a defensive big. Maybe just train Big E on defense all day every day for those types of situations.

It's December 1st. Season is still really early. They still have UNLV and Missouri on the road/neutral. BU couldn't control the scheduling too much this year. I suspect he will dial it up next season. We already have Maui on the schedule.

Great fight for the first B1G. This is our first year, beginning of the first year. Northwestern is a veteran , albeit overrated club. I love the fight. Great game by many. Alsork's best, TJL's best. Leron is becoming a black hole on the post and no matter what I want to see more Smith.

Great Game

Gotta remember that last year OSU started 0-6 in conference play, then by March only lost by 1 point in the Tourney to a Michigan team that went deep. Their problem was dialing in defense. We have that figured out--just look at tonight's forced turnovers. Our issue is learning a new and complicated offense. I have no doubt that will come with time. Then we will be double barreled and dangerous.
