eh
it’s hard to stomach if you think about it real hard. but you can’t really blame all the upper class man if they participated under pressure

I still eat sausage after I saw it being made a few times .

Not sure if a link has been posted yet but here is a link to CBS Chicago's YT video of the press conference by Crump & NW students. The press conference starts around the 26 min mark.

I don't know why people around here feel like they can look down on Northwestern so easily when it comes to sports. They've not only been better than us consistently at many sports for years now, but have also been trending upwards while we've mostly been trending downwards. I understand many of you grew up in different eras for Illinois where this was not the case, but it's just kind of awkward and embarrassing to be so dismissive of their teams when they're often better than ours.

If you want to go after Northwestern for something, make fun of their woeful attendance. For the season finale this year against the Illini I swear there were only like 3k people there.

In the modern University (outside of STEM fields), Sumatran Basket Weaving is considered a respectable major, along with all of the rigorous Humanities majors that end with the word "Studies"
FIFU.

In the modern University (outside of STEM fields), Sumatran Basket Weaving is considered a respectable major, along with all of the rigorous Humanities majors that end with the word "Studies" after which these graduates can't find work that enables them to pay off their student loans and then demand that other taxpayers make good on their debt.

Academic arrogance is not limited to those who dwell inside ivy covered walls. One can see descriptions such as "uneducated goobers" and the like posted on various boards on this and other sites. As for the Northwestern situation, athletes often get special treatment beginning early in their playing careers that can alter their perceptions of themselves and others, what is right and wrong, what is accomplished and how it should be managed and celebrated, etc. We should not be surprised that some (many?) do not handle it well.

“Begin with the end in mind” remains good advice. Many prosperous “uneducated goobers” become the millionaire next door that way. Actually, it’s not advice, just wisdom. Only a fool borrows without a repayment plan. If you’re there just to explore your interests and socialize, don’t borrow a dollar until you’ve developed a career plan. Explore only where you can pay your way. Hopefully our student athletes get career coaching too so they can build a prosperous life in the real world outside their bubble.

Of all the schools in the B1G, Northwestern is the last one I thought would be caught up in a mess like this.
Makes you wonder how prevalent this is historically, given that it's an elite private institution with no obligation to the general public.

I actually wonder how prevalent it is in college football in general

Depends on how you measure hazing. Was listening to Pat Macafee who I sort of agreed with when he said the carrying pads, cleaning, setting up etc that rookies/freshman are subjected to is not the same as naked bear crawls, dry humping, etc.

Basically in the age of social media, it's wild that stuff like this would still go on unnoticed.

I would bet that hazing to the extent of Northwestern's issues is actually quite rare. I think it more speaks to the incredibly inflated sense of self worth that comes with the territory that is a university like Northwestern. You are no longer subjected to the standards of mere "normal" people and so we will do whatever we want and who the heck thinks they will tell us otherwise?

I would actually be interested in how often this occurs at universities similar to Northwestern, not even just related to athletics.

Robert's article on it was really good.

There's a rumor that in 1963 when the freshman football team was off playing in Toledo an upper classman named Butkus (perhaps you've heard of him) snatched a couple sheep from the south farms and locked them in one of the freshman's dorm room for the weekend.

it must have been Room 267 in Hopkins cuz it still smelled bad 16 years later in fall 1979

When I was an RA in Scott Hall, on Halloween Saturday night someone deposited a couple sheep on the front lawn after midnight (why is it always two... so they have some company in their strange new environs?) I was on duty that night (what fun) and had to deal with their ensuing repatriation (via the police and a very annoyed and sleepy agricultural steward) to South Farms. Poor things. They were quite confused. Fortunately, they were ewes and not rams (thank goodness.)

If someone told me this was going on at a B10 school, my first thought would have been Michigan as it would fit with their holier than thou attitude. I'd then think maybe Nebraska because it'd explain a lot with how badly they underperformed during Frost's tenure and they seemed to have some locker room issues. Northwestern likely wouldn't have been in my Top 5, but then again, ritualistic naked hazing is about as secret society ivy league as it gets, so I guess it's not as surprising...

By the way, I don't think anyone else has mentioned it on here but Pat Fitzgerald's son, Jack committed to Northwestern and would've been a freshman this year. They must be having some interesting dinner conversations in that house right now...

Is that what that smell was? I was on Hopkins 4th floor in 1979.
we were the room on second floor , right above the ground floor pass thru

a girl from my high school painted the Rolling Stones lips as a 5ft by 5ft like decal . it was “locally famous “

the guys next door to us were swimmers . they thought the Stones thing was so nice they paid her to paint an REO speedwagon logo on their windows . alas, UI killed the men’s swimming team in 1980 due to Title IX , and they both had to transfer out

I believe this toxic coachers happens elsewhere. Illinois use this as an example to teach.
