Hey I'm frustrated too and I think most fans have some level of frustration but to not have faith in the future of the program is a little over the top.

What stings many Illini fans is the lack of recent success in the NCAA tournament. And the fear that it might happen again. So a regular-season loss brings up old wounds about what might happen next. And how that would feel again.

We appreciate the Big Ten title and the great success the program has had during the regular season in the past few years. And all the effort that Coach and staff and players have put in to achieve that. But there is only one big trophy for a National Championship. And Illini Nation is so hungry for that one that we can taste it.

For those who tend to want to give up on this team, how about this: The Illini are playing with 'house money' at this point. No one Nationally is looking at them as a serious contender. And some fans are cooling off their expectations further. So whatever the Illini can do on the plus side during the tournament is gravy right now.

You cannot play this game thinking negatively or playing tense. You have to purge all that from your system and go out there and play like you have nothing to lose. That's hard to do when the fans and the program itself cares so much. But you have to shake off those things that are a blow to your confidence and remember what it's like to play loose and free. That's when your confidence and success will come back again. That's how you find your game again.

Yes. They will go after better shooters in the portal this next year. There will be an emphasis on getting the best possible players available instead of upsetting someone on the team currently. Both freshman are super talented coming in next year but we will likely get 4 transfers to come with them

Just curious, and I don’t expect you to name names but what positions did we not go after for fear of alienating players currently on the roster. Biggest one I can potentially see would be a PG for fear of losing one of Clark/Epps but of course that didn’t really pan out. We certainly brought in some wings so weren’t as concerned about RJ/Luke?

On a really good team, I think Epps would be an offensive spark off the bench. There is a lot being asked of him to run and defend the point, neither of which are his strengths. Maybe having another true point guard on the roster will allow Epps to develop into a good starting #2 guard, but size is always going to be a problem.
As a freshman, yes that is true. He can get much stronger and better and I believe he shall. He is not yet and that’s why more physical guards have hurt us! To me that’s on BU not Epps. Epps could even be a starter at times but we lack anyone quick enough or strong enough to handle many of the best guards in the B10. It’s been on display in most of our loses.

After watching Wisconsin and Michigan I am beginning to wonder if the reason we shoot so many 3's is that because we don't really play very well as a team? Anyone know off hand what percentage of our baskets result from an assist????
It's very low compared to past seasons especially. Offense is so stagnant that we get very few shots off the dribble or entry. Lot of dribble, dribble, dribble, weave, dribble, weave, dribble, dribble fade away hero ball

Tons of talent yes, but half of our rotation are first year guys. Next year it will be an easier transition due to bringing back more guys. Still think this team can go on a run in March Madness, but who knows
And our two most experienced starters are good to very good but not even close to the consistent stars we hoped they would be.
OTOH, they get hot and we can beat anyone.

I hope they get strong-willed players. Although Mayer has improved and has helped the team, I believe his sensitivity has ultimately made BU less himself as a coach. Old BU would've clamped down on the 3-point shooting a lot earlier, imo.

He needs to stay true to himself and get players who can hack it. Epps didn't go in the game the other day because Shannon was allowed to do it earlier. A Freshman doing that? Gave in to the weaker-mentality players. And that's why, I believe, this is whom they are.

This is not new....for whatever reason we have had poor ball and player movement on offense throughout BU's tenure here. We were bailed out the previous 3 seasons by having a unicorn in Kofi. Without him, what we are seeing this year is likely our ceiling with Underwood as coach.

I don't know man. Brad should pull these players (Jayden, Coleman, etc...) that decide the best plan on offense is to jack up 25-30 footers. I'm convinced Coleman thinks that he gets more points the further that he shoots the ball. Brad needs to rip into this team and tell them that we are shooting WAY too many shots that we can get whenever we want them. But he just lets those same culprits play and jack up stupid shots that occasionally go in.
To be fair, Shannon launcheem from Downtown Willie Brown-ville too.
Sometimes Mayer as well.

And don't forget that PG Nicco (sp?). He's still with us, isn't he?
Him plus 2nd year Epps/Harris will make our ball handling considerably better next season, IMO, just need to add a couple great 3 pt shooting 2 guards from the portal, plus a couple good front court players.

Clark is the only one I can think of that fits that. I have no idea if what if any top tier guy we “could” have gotten. Maybe Ramey fits that bill, and I’d sure like to have him on this years team, but I’m not sure we could get him.

At some point in a season a team turns from projections, prognostications, and potential to being what they are. And while it's sad to say, I think at this point in the season we simply are who we are. We're a very inconsistent team with above average athleticism and size, but we have subpar bball IQ, and we are a very large volume three shooting team despite having only one player in Mayer who shoots at an above average (though still inefficient) rate. While that's frustrating to see as a fan, it's just really what it is.

And having watched Illinois basketball for quite some time, seeing this team play harkens to the twilight days of the Weber era, and specifically the Jereme Richmond year, where the team had some very skilled players and some big early season wins, but was very inconsistent and had a dark cloud of off-court drama following it around all season. It was a really frustrating year that started with high expectations and just showed that for what Weber was trying to do, the team was poorly constructed to do it.

And I think that's the problem here- the roster Underwood has just isn't constructed in a way that allows for being used the way Underwood wants. The team is lacking the senior leadership and buy-in Underwood expects, and the players are often too stubborn in wanting their own shot and plays called for them than to play as a team. This year, we play as a bunch of individuals and not as a team with the exception really being Rodgers and Harris and we pay for it because in the B10, rarely do individuals win games for you. I think this teaches that the portal doesn't cure your ills if you don't have the leadership and structure around it to support it. Unfortunately it seems there was too much turnover, not enough upperclassman leadership on this team, and just too much unfamiliarity with Underwood's coaching and systems for this team to come together and be the team we hoped it would.

So overall I'll cheer for the team that goes out on the court, but I've released them of my expectations at this point. We should make the tourney so long as we win at least 1 more game, but I just have a hard time seeing us going much of anywhere considering just how inconsistent we are, along with our worrisome tendencies.

It is a lot easier to coach a player that you have molded over 4 years who buys into your culture, rather than a one-year rental player who is just trying to improve draft stock. Telling Mayer not to shoot might have a different outcome than telling Trent Frazier not to shoot, for instance. So I don't think its about sensitivity or will because one-year transfers are just more focused on their own goals and not the team's goals. It's the unfortunate state of college basketball today.

I’d like to believe that. But can Illinois (or anyone else) say that with even a modicum of certainty? I don’t need to remind anyone about all the unexpected departures of this year.

It seems to me, with the climate of CBB getting old and staying old might just prove to be something that we simply can’t always count on…and I mean, like ever…at all…like even a little older <top to bottom> Uncertainty is the new certainty it seems…

In other words: Out of necessity we’re probably always gonna have fIrst year guys
having to be major cogs in the wheel…I guess, I don’t see how we’re not going to have to have the majority of our rosters constructed more on the fly and more piecemeal than ever before. I’m sure that’s why the Jay Wright’s of the world are playing more golf these days.

For Brad’s sake…I wish we could get back to some semblance of the “Everyday Guys” philosophy and have that mean something again. I’m sure he’ll figure it out. Some teams simply prove tougher to manage than others…This season has probably felt like walking on egg shells for him. We all know how he likes to operate…

But with this team he’s had to hold on loosely but not let go. Because if you cling too tightly you’re gonna loose control…
(I think that last part might make a good song.)

I felt this game was gonna be a tough row to hoe , but I am totally surprised with the lack of production from Dain.
Figuring with zed out of the lineup for osu that we would have an advantage in the paint....maybe his fall last game factored in , but kinda puzzling to me....
Another game, another pathetic first half...Another early lead at 5-0 then a complete paralyzed period of time to dig that familiar hole to have to climb out of.

We are not consistent in most of our schemes on O or D from half to half , much less game to game...We do have a very talented squad and are capable of beating most anybody in the nation.
But when we run our offense with the intent of setting a screen and chucking it from the cheap seats we are doing our our selves a disservice...We having more than enough talent to beat highly ranked teams with us using our 2 point plays with the occasional 3 attempted....
I will be first in line saying cut down on the 3 pt shots and assault the paint , but this team has a preference for the 3's...that's pretty clear to all by now....
I thought be were ready to take control finally when we got to within 1 point at
53-52 but then the wheels came completely off.
Game over , and a slim chance of tieing for the B$G went up in smoke as did another game of fruitless shooting behind the arc....

I will never give up hope for my Illini and anyone who posts they have gets the ignore button treatment from me....I know that ain't much in some people's minds , but I want to be surrounded by fans who will go to battle every game and not give up whenever hard times come around....

Ok , back to your regularly scheduled armchair coaches bash-athon and whatever you think will solve the illini's problems.

I'll stick with BU and staff to do that for me cause I believe in them.

I REALLY REALLY DO......
