Ohio State 75, Illinois 67 POSTGAME

Hope others are right about MS. It seems to me that he doesn't have the athleticism of a Bates-Diop or the spark/talent of BP.

Also, re being forced to change his game: if he were a terrific point guard, he'd be playing point guard. I don't think that's the root of the problem.

The team isn't frustrating but these post are. Once again all the freshmen were expected to struggle and all will get better. One of our freshmen is greatly exceeding our expectations, some slightly above the mark others below it.

Keita Diop had his share of struggles at tOSU, but is now blossoming. Unfair to compare Smith to him. BU offense is great, multiple options and all players are a threat. Give the players to execute it better and BU to recruit to it.

I used to be like everyone else and take players out when they had 2 fouls in the first half. Then I was a jv coach in a regional championship and our best player got 2 fouls in the first quarter. Our head coach looked at me and said “we have to leave him in.” He finished the game not fouling out. I think that is what we need to do with Trent Leron and Miller. We aren’t going to win without them. And “protecting” them by sitting is the equivalent of fouling out. I would rather them play as long as possible. Maybe if we keep Trent in we don’t blow the whole lead and we have enough to hang on. Idk I just think with our lack of depth we. See to play those guys come hell or high water and roll the dice. I would rather have a 10 point lead with 3 minutes to go and then all fouled out than be tied or down 5 and try to win.........

Who? If that's a middle name of Kipper "Miller" Nichols, then that's the worst name I've heard of since Joey Joe Joe Junior Shabadoo. :D

How many Mr Basketballs have come in and played out of position ?

The entire situation has to be a total shock to him as hes a HS PG who has come in and is playing SF/SG a lot of minutes while standing in the corner waiting for passes that never come .

I am not really feeling this offense right now because I just don't see the benefit for a 3 guard attack . Its fantastic for a one guard offense but if you are off the ball in this offense you are at the mercy of a the primary guard.

Mark Smith will eventually be fine but right now hes being asked to change his entire game while adapting to a change in competition.

Watch some videos on it. This is not true at all. The basis of the offense is ball and player movement. Everybody has to learn how to play on and off the ball. It’s just that Trent is our best guard scoring option right now, so he gets the majority of the shots, as the best scoring option should.

KBP played less than 10 minutes as a FR.

Do you not think trent got enough shots/touches? he went 5-15....

Mostly in the 2nd half, non existant while trying to get offense going in 1st especially during the run by OSU...so better touches at key times?:chief:

We are starting to see more movement in the offense and when that happens it appears that everyone gets in the flow with three guards getting opportunities to do something with the ball in their hands as a ball handler. We seem to always have two guys off the ball in position to take a three but all three guards are rotating those positions. It just so happens that Frazier is always the fist and tends to be the most aggressive.

JUSt finished watching the game on delay. Wow, Bardo is terrible. Every call against us is an easy call, every call that goes our way is questionable. He needs to be slapped, hard. His low point was on the phantom call against Bates-Diop, he was ok with it because he’s having a good year so he deserves phantom foul calls. That makes no sense.

And Lucas missing those two foul shots near the end then our fouling them on the ensuing rebound was the game, imo. Devastating.

Anyone want to dispute this? I think I'll agree with the boss.

He tries too hard to be objective when working his alma mater’s games . He does an excellent job when doing others. It’s that simple.

I am pretty sure he wasn't saying that a player on a roll should get favorable calls. His point seemed to be more about the fact that players who are playing really well tend to get the benefit of the doubt on calls more often.

Exactly

When he said that Jae'sean Tate wouldn't have lost the ball unless he was fouled, right in the midst of our scoreless drought

Didn't get to see the game but heard parts of it on radio while I was working. As much as I would like for them to have won this, I am gratified by the fact that they were in it until the end against a superior team. Lack of a down low presence and foul trouble did us in more than anything. You can't get out-rebounded like we did and expect to win. Mistakes continue to haunt us. We would have needed a nearly perfect game to win this one.

Not sure I've ever seen this:

30pts in the first 10 minutes
0 pts in the next 10 minutes

Would like a shot blocking big who can score, but wouldn't mind a 6-8 Josh Cunningham type. Basically a Leron x 2 (possibly better) who can start alongside him. Interesting what happens in the transfer market this spring.

There's all of what you just said AND you forgot to add the fact that you didn't turn the game on until the point where we led 30-17. ;)

Fair, BUT I was listening to it on the radio on the way home from church and tuned in at 13-11 Illinois... :hand:

I somewhat disagree with this.

You could make the argument that we're playing well enough to stay competitive with pretty much anybody. But there's a big difference between being competitive, and winning.

The gap between us and Michigan State/Purdue is pretty wide. We hung around with MSU -- at home -- but we weren't even close to beating them. We had a chance against Ohio State, but it's not like we lost on a buzzer beater or made a critical mistake with 30 seconds left that lost it for us. Going 10 minutes without scoring, fouling way too much, making silly turnovers, and consistently shooting poorly from outside are the sorts of things that keep us from making the transition from "competitive" to "victorious".

Is the potential there to beat anybody in the league? Yes. But realistically, we are not playing well enough to beat Michigan State or Purdue. Not unless all the stars align.

The losses have been disheartening for sure, but with only one exception, this team never quits. I think Underwood has already made some pretty great strides in trying to fix the culture problem. He still has work to do on the talent/athleticism side of things via recruiting, but man, the team passes the eye test more than any in recent memory. This is still the most optimistic I've felt about our program in quite a while.

There are signs for optimism, although I do not believe that this team has played up to par. But there have been multiple other times in recent history in previous regimes when people focused on signs, even with more optimism, and things never materialized.

In Groce's first year, when we clearly overachieved, people did mention the change of culture, especially finishing very strong, winning an NCAA game, coming a really bad call away from potentially upsetting a no. 2 seed (Miami). Even in Bruce's first years, despite the overabundance of talent, people were very optimistic, i.e., best passing team in the nation, etc. etc.

But at then end it comes down to talent. Either you get it, or the hope dies. And while the mantra of "talent has not been the problem, it is coaching" has slowly died this year, BU has to succeed on the recruiting trail for Illinois to consistently compete. Otherwise, it will be more of the same...

Here's the thing, though... They actually put up 67 points in about 25 minutes! :thumb:

(if you ignore the stretches were they didn't score - two different slots that totaled about 15 minutes)

My first Illini game since the Bruce Weber era. My first game in C-Bus since the last time we won their in 2004. Here are my 2 cents.

1. Settled too much for perimeter shots once we got up big, and they werent falling. Which leads to run-outs and easy buckets for OSU.
2. Severely undermanned, had no one for Bates-Diop. Need size next year (maybe in form of grad-transfer etc)
3. We have a lot of guards that cant do much offensively other than shoot the three....
4. Love how we play defense and pressure the ball, this will only get better in years to come.
5. I liked our fight and have confidence that we will get better sooner rather than later.

I liked the 3-2 zone with AJ or another 6'5" out on point....seems to slow down there flow on O.....why we changed back to man is a mystery...man D allowed them a few put back baskets after we had to help out on dribble penetration...

The Ohio State game was winnable. That doesn't mean we can beat anybody in the league right now, though.

As I said.....we're competitive. But those mistakes are keeping us out of the win column against good competition. It is what it is.
