People mention are experience all of the time but realistically 3 of are worst performers in Big Ten play are seniors. Outside of Hill and Morgan (on offense) are best players are freshman/sophomores.

They don't have heart. Having "heart" means playing like they did in the 2nd half all the time. Not bits and pieces of the time.

That's a little harsh. They are all competitors. You don't get to division 1 basketball without being a competitor. I believe there's a lot of factors contributing slow starts, halftime energy level, etc. I'm of the opinion Groce needs to have Rick Morannis do the "one time" locker room speech from Little Giants.

Could it be that Groce has everything so analyzed/planned that everyone is trying to follow some script. They just need to come out and play like their hair is on fire which is what they started to do in the second half.

Substitutes do seem so scripted that they do not take game flow into effect

Lack of any thing that resembled an offensive set or execution in closing seconds. Way, Way, Way too much dribbling and standing. Also, coaching was also absent during last seconds. I'm sure the kids feel sick, me too.

Imo Tate may be the worst player to get serious minutes in the last 17+ years at Illinois. I'm sure I'm forgetting somebody, but nobody comes to mind.

The kid tries. But he's just not D1 talent.

TJL speed & court awareness is at another level. He should have been playing much earlier. Would have been ready for situations like this and made us a better team.

Will be interesting to see the +/- figures for each player in this game, even though the coach doesn't seem to take that metric into account when he substitutes.

With just seconds left and down, you need shooters in the game.

Groce has Tate in the game.

Tell me more about his brilliant basketball mind.

I agree with the flagrant foul call. Team played so much better in second half. I thought there were great adjustments made at half. The rotation changed-no names, but several guys really didnt see floor in last ten minutes. Lucas played much more aggressive defensively which made a world of difference on their offense. It is too bad he cannot play 40 minutes-even when he makes mistakes at least they are young mistakes. I also was thrilled the majority of positive minutes and points and defensive plays made in the comeback were from the underclassmen. I will not call this a moral victory but I really hope the team learned a lot today. If they did, that will make a tough loss worth it. As an aside, I thought they came out with good effort-several offensive rebounds and loose balls in first few minutes. They then flattened out when the threes started to drop. Makes such a difference when they can create a little more and hits some shots. Hoping for a positive carry over.

Too many weird combinations of players.

For too long and through too many teams, the Illini seen to often to only have 4 scorers on the floor.

An odd characteristic for way too long now.

Honestly, with where Abrams is (straight up passed up a wide open and threw the ball out of bounds in the midst of a crazy comeback), Tate almost has to play, unless you think Lucas is capable of playing 40 minutes.

Turned to Kentucky vs Kansas, its like seeing your ex-hot girl friend and being insanely jealous even though she was out of your league. Damn you Self and your rug, why, why, why!

No terrible play. Correct call.

I know this game DEFINITELY doesn't boil down to one play, but I argue that if the same thing happened at the beginning of the half, there would not be a flagrant called, if a foul at all. That's why I'm pissed off. And for a game that was largely played laissez-faire by the refs, this was a call that should've never happened.

Ugh....... On to Wisconsin.

Played only one big a large portion of the second half. Was our best lineup today.

Unfortunately one of them has to play. Neither Abrams or Tate are playing well but we don't have other options. Same reason Thorne is getting playing time at center. Are so called depth doesn't exist because of under performing seniors.

Just finished the game, I was out, so I had to watch it delayed. This post will ramble a little bit, so skip it if you please. I certainly don't have the track record of some of our more illustrious posters.

I teach high school English and Theatre. I took two years off while my daughter completed her senior year in high school and her first year in college. In those two years, I watched someone else direct the program, never thinking I would go back.

As I watched their work, I was so dismayed that there was so much talent, talent that I had worked with, that was left on the stage in mediocre shows. I knew the actors in our school had worlds more talent than what was being shown.

This is the game I just watched. Our players decided to let their talent take over, and almost prevailed, despite the lackluster direction they are being given. We should have won this game easily...we have better players. What we don't have is better coaching.
