Penn State 71, Illinois 67 POSTGAME

After the first few possessions, PSU shooters breaking out of slumps, UI looking awkward and uncomfortable, I decided I'd had enough of watching the game. Recorded it from there.

My wife, who is more of a novice fan, not quite as cynical as me, continued watching. After reporting on the UI near comeback she remarked that TL appeared to be "playing scared". If she sees it, it's obvious.

I had watched the first time he brought the ball up. He stopped between the time line and the top of the key and just pounded the ball. He looked lost, rigid, immobilized. Could practically hear his brain saying, don't make a mistake, don't turn it over. I had not seen that from him before.

Sure he's made mistakes, been a bit out of control before. But his mistakes were almost always mistakes of aggression. Now I'm thinking he's infected with the team disease. Suddenly he's become passive, anxious, thinking instead of playing. He didn't look like that before.

I will say I've noticed a reluctance by TJL to take open looks, but I can't say with any certainty if that's him or the coaching. I tend to side with the former, simply because he doesn't seem to look for 3's early in the clock (which is a philosophy I agree with)

Groce previews Wisconsin

Groce: I am proud of the way our guys competed and battled in the 2nd half. More focused about making less mistakes overall.

...and people don't seem to realize why that statement in bold (on top of the other numerous stupid things Groce said in that conference) really struck a nerve.

Any coach who has his players focusing on not making negative things happen instead of focusing on the positive things that they should be making happen... deserves to have the AD hand him his walking papers right then and there.

Are pressers going to be the reason Groce gets fired? Probably not because there are so many other good reasons to fire him, but they do provide some insight into the coach's "mindset" and just exactly where he's taking this team.

Can't wait for him to be out as the head coach of the basketball team.
