It's almost like we have to shake off the awful pre game speech and game plan before we can start playing some basketball?

gut. wrenching.

This is one you needed to win. Stormed back to within 3 points, all the momentum. Needed to do what was necessary down the stretch to pull this out. It's on the road, we were underdogs, but a win here shifts the narrative a little. With this loss, it's hard to imagine this season not involving fire and dumpster.

That's an NBA rule, not college. I'm guessing they called it because he didn't make a play on the ball, but not sure on that one since the PSU player didn't have the ball yet.

The reason he didn't have the ball yet is Tate grabbed his arm to prevent him from getting to the ball.

They will call that every time. And since there's no longer an intentional foul all of that type are flagrant IIRC.

Tough call, but it seemed clear he would have had the ball and a clear path to the basket.

Probably, but I don't think that's part of the definition of a flagrant foul. It's either excessive contact or not making a play on the ball.

Sure, it was definitely a foul. Just a marginal call to make it flagrant.

Please explain, I sounded to me like the announcer was saying that they did away with excessive and just went to flagrant for all those instances. Is that the right interpretation?

That's what I understand. No intentional/flagrant. All of that type are now flagrant.

We are seriously bad in our half court offense. We were successful against Iowa when we played up tempo. Very bad in half court sets. Too much time to think, conversely, when we are running or up tempo, no time to think, just react. Abrams and Tate have to play some minutes to rest Lucas, but they should be limited. Both almost always slow things down and dribble too much, then make very bad decisions. And if they happen to be playing well, Groce will find a lineup combo that doesn't work. Its a gift.

Just finished the game, I was out, so I had to watch it delayed. This post will ramble a little bit, so skip it if you please. I certainly don't have the track record of some of our more illustrious posters.

I teach high school English and Theatre. I took two years off while my daughter completed her senior year in high school and her first year in college. In those two years, I watched someone else direct the program, never thinking I would go back.

As I watched their work, I was so dismayed that there was so much talent, talent that I had worked with, that was left on the stage in mediocre shows. I knew the actors in our school had worlds more talent than what was being shown.

This is the game I just watched. Our players decided to let their talent take over, and almost prevailed, despite the lackluster direction they are being given. We should have won this game easily...we have better players. What we don't have is better coaching.
Solid post and analogy. Thanks for sharing-

Is it sad that I don't care anymore? At this point I'm not even upset about losses because I feel it's another step towards the change that is needed. An NCAA tournament berth in a year when the Big Ten was down would have been nothing special, in my opinion, so I think this is all for the better.

This. Though I almost hate myself for it.

Illinois came out the first half and dug a huge hole.

Can't tell me jet lag had any thing to do with such a lack luster start.

The initial plan to pound the ball down low would have worked if those soft bunnies would have fallen. Illinois was out played in the paint once again.

I love this team-It has Size-Talent and Heart. But there is something wrong with the chemistry on both side of the Ball.

We fought hard and clawed back in this game a trait that shows these kids never give up.

The Talent is here to compete and win games the Disconnect is we are not winning. This is a real head scratcher for me.

Very Solid Post- To sum up your post I think it comes down to one word-LEADERSHIP

I completely agree. This team is so Jekyll and Hyde it doesn't make sense to me either. They show flashes where they appear to be firing at all cylinders and then other times don't look like they have a clue what they are doing. The only answer I can think of is coaching.

We have to be honest that in most matchups, we are worse at the following spots than our opponent:
PG: FAR worse
SG: On par at best; no depth
PF: Worse in depth
C: Worse in depth

At PG, we are totally outclassed. TJL has reduced the gap, but not enough. Our backups put us in trouble when in the game. Our backups at SG, PF, and C absolutely put us in danger (aside from Finke).

It's hard to win with inconsistent play by JCL and Black especially. When they are on along with Malcolm and Morgan, we can hang for stretches with solid teams. But then there's the "sum of our parts" analysis. Once you put us together, we are the opposite of Voltron. We just don't do anything particularly well that is repeatable.

I don't like this team very much, sadly. I will watch and I like a bunch of the players, but I am simply looking for growth from the young players and for awesomeness from Hill. That's the joy to be gained from this squad...

People mention are experience all of the time but realistically 3 of are worst performers in Big Ten play are seniors. Outside of Hill and Morgan (on offense) are best players are freshman/sophomores.

Bingo and should be playing
