John Groce teleconference

Groce: Thorne has done a little practicing. A little bit of contact. Trying to go day-by-day. Not sure how knee will respond.

Groce: There's a chance we've gotten to point where we may be able to use Thorne for some minutes.

Groce: Still day-to-day. Chance we could use him moving forward tomorrow night or this weekend. Won't be decided until day of game.

Groce: On Nebraska loss ... We didn't play like we practiced. Didn't play like we did (against Purdue). That was disappointing.

Groce: Surprised at the way we played Saturday. Didn't think we'd play like that. Malcolm Hill was a bright spot.

Groce: Can't use youthfullness or injuries or continuity as an excuse.

Groce: Indiana is really good. They're great offensively. They've got multiple weapons. Shoot the 3 well. Put the ball on the floor.

Groce: JCL is a work in progress right now. Didn't start practicing until Nov. Think he has potential to be 2-way player. #Illini

Groce: Our job is to make every effort to bring (injured guys) back.

Bringing back Mike Thorne would be interesting.

When you see him on the bench and in street clothes, he doesn't look bigger than before.

Huh? He's huge. Not healthy and cut huge, just huge. I thought he had a run at limited minute(s) vs Neb. .... fully to see him on the floor soon...in real limited time up and down the court.

Unfortunate he/they couldn't keep the weight gain down during the layoff (through the diet), but my guess is the diabetes complicates that a great deal, especially for someone his size. Hopefully, we can get some serviceable time on the court for the next several weeks as he gets himself back in a reasonable condition, for a late season surge and rally to winning the B1G tourney! (Sorry, got carried away there). His injury is really a bummer.

Illini fans shouldn't anticipate 25mpg, 13ppg, 8rpg Mike Thorne when he returns. He's up to 282 lbs. Played at 268

I just spent Friday-Sunday in New Orleans. Between all of the Cajun and Creole food, mardis gras, and beverage intake, I probably put on 14 pounds over the weekend! Big Mike has done a great job only putting on 14 pounds since Thanksgiving. :thumb:

+1. I just got home from 5 days in the Dominican Republic at an all inclusive resort. I bet I gained at least 7-8 lbs easily. Not very hard to put on weight and for Big Mike to have only gained 14 in the time he was out isn't bad considering his diabetes. I am diabetic as well (although not as severe as him) and you can control it some with a diet but the best thing you can do to keep sugar levels down is exercise. Unfortunately, due to his injury he wasn't able to. Had it been a hand injury he could have maintained his weight better. But 14 lbs isn't a lot and I'm sure the staff will try to get him back down as much as they can

Although the Nebraska loss was a huge momentum killer, a win here would be even more significant. Road wins are much more valuable to the committee, but even without tourney expectations, I'd rather have a team lose a couple bad ones if they can pull off a couple of major upsets. That shows a higher ceiling, while the losses can be attributed to inexperience instead of lack of talent.

Didn't Thorne play at 290 for Charlotte? 268 is clearly preferable, but it's not like he won't be able to get up and down the court.
