Wonder how many people will Armchair Quarterback at how much better we could have been if Crouch was starting this week

LOL

Nothing short of Tim Tebow reincarnate would help this team from a QB standpoint. When you dont have protection you're never going to be able get any sort of production out of the quarterback position.

That's one surprising situation. Having a dual quarterback system with JGJ or Crouch playing depending on the situation seems doable. Making Cam Thomas available is either desperation or Cam has made great strides, if previous reports that he wasn't ready and the staff wanted to keep his redshirt intact are true.

It is slightly odd that he announced it today, because you're basically telling Iowa what you're going to do offensively. I suspect it was because the decision was an easy one to make and it was time to move on and keep this question from becoming any kind of a distraction as the week wore on.

That Chayce was moved to 3rd string I think confirms this.

I don't think Lovie wants to play Cam at all this year, if possible. I think Cam is #2 more because Chayce is #3 vs. Cam having improved a ton. Just my opinion.

Odd that Cam goes from "suspended indefinitely" on Saturday to jumping over Chayce on the depth chart on Monday.

There is no way Iowa wouldn't have found out about it, not in 2017. How many hundreds of people around the program would have to keep it quiet? In the age of Twitter?

Plus it would have made for an awkward week around practice and such. You have to get out it front, it's only fair to Crouch.

Pretty good opinion. Definitely a possibility. :thumb:

I wonder if Crouch is getting reps at tight end? :D

Part of me feels this is a legitimate change, but reading the way Lovie answered questions about the order of the non-starting QB's, He seems to hint that this is where it stands today. Maybe a way to say to Crouch "If you want your job back you are going to have to win it this week" thus sparking some better play from him?

just me 2 cents

Some pretty good comps to try and move him. Owen Daniels at Wisconsin, and from just this past week in the NFL, Aj Derby.

Lovie previews Iowa

https://twitter.com/JWernerScout

Lovie: Need to do a lot of things better. Individuals are improving though.

Lovie: Need to get into the end zone on offense, missed opportunities at turnovers on defense.

Lovie: "We're making a change at the quarterback position."

Lovie: In our starting rotation at quarterback, we have Jeff George. And then we have Cam Thomas.

Lovie: Cam Thomas is spart of football team. He will be competing for playing time.

Lovie: We're not a passing team, but we need to be able to pass. Want to have balance.

Lovie: Cam Thomas has great speed, developmental arm. Skilled athlete. Lot of potential.

Lovie: Blake Hayes is accurate with placement of punts. We're getting what we expected from specialists.

Lovie: Coverage units fairly good. Return game is different.

Lovie: Will look at different options for kickoff return.

Asked #Illini Lovie for clarification on QB depth chart.: Jeff George is next in line at No. 1. Next in line is Cam Thomas.

Can change.

Q: CamThomas is no longer suspended then?

A: He is scheduled to make the trip to Iowa

A lot of "trust the process" mentioned by #illini coaches today. Frustration at not competing but focus is on long-term growth.

OC Garrick McGee said center Doug Kramer Jr. is feeling better. sounds like he’ll start on Saturday. Three freshmen OL starters?

Not trying to be a smarta$$ but indefinitely does not mean forever. It means until you take care of whatever got you in trouble: grades, skipping meeting, class whatever.

Agreed. Now if you hear the news via the police first, followed by Lovie, then it is fair to say that suspended indefinitely could mean a lot longer/forever.

Well, sure... my point was, if it was announcing last week's punishment and the action was big enough to make public then one would assume it's not going to be lifted 7 days later?

At the time, I just assumed it a way to quiet fans into thinking he should be starting or in a PT role to protect his RS.

Ugh. Dual QBing like that is just terrible. "Here, let me just tell you what play I am about to run."

Well, there is a little bit of the rubbing it in just a bit as Nebraska FRESHMAN LB Ben Stille has been named BIG Ten Freshman of the week.

I came into this season thinking that Crouch would hold on to the QB spot through his strength as a runner. Whether it was the scheme or Crouch's lack of ability, he wasn't able to do enough with his feet to make up for his arm. I think it's the right move to start Jr. He's going to throw picks and make mistakes, but his ceiling seems higher than Crouch's.

One other question for all of you: Was I the only one that completely forgot about Reggie Corbin? So happy to see him get back into the game. What was his story anyway?

How well our offense goes will be determined by how well our QB can get the ball to our talented receivers and keep teams off balance enough so we can establish a good run game with Epstein and Co. JG gives us the best chance at that. This is the right move.

I agree. Though I think perhaps Lovie & Co. thought our defense could/would be better than it is. If this was the case, Crouch would be my guy. But seeing as we aren't a stiffleing D, we need to get some sort of explosiveness on offense. Running it 9 times out of 10 doesn't work when you're down three scores with 10 minutes left.
