It was a slightly different week ... but in October of 2021, we were sitting at 2-5 as we went into a tough road game that many thought we had no chance in. We won our first game but then got smoked on the road vs. a Power Five opponent, and we were coming off an absolute low point in the form of a potential "turnaround" game at home vs. a Big Ten West foe turning into a demoralizing beatdown in front of our home fans.

We then went on the road and shocked #7 Penn State! And not only that, we looked like a completely different team than we had seen to that point in the season. Don't get me wrong, I am not optimistic for Saturday ... but man, what a great opportunity to FINALLY click! Unfortunately, I fear a beatdown. :(

I would expect Maryland 28 and Illinois 7.

Not a total embarrassment but not close.

I might have bought that line after Florida Atlantic. Even against a subpar opponent the offense managed to execute in spots and you could imagine that there was a base to build on. But that won't fly after what we saw against Nebraska. Hardly anything worked against the Huskers. The offense clearly regressed and I doubt that all of what went wrong can be fixed in a week.

Oh well, I'm mostly here for hoops anyway...
I just took a look at our roster on fi.com. Out of 21 offensive linemen, there are 3 seniors and 1 junior. The rest are sophomores and freshmen. When BB talked about losing two committed transfers and a lack of depth he wasn't kidding.

95th in scoring offense last season

119th in scoring offense currently this season

Anything can happen but Illinois will need the A game this week and Maryland show up with a C game to win this game. Considering we haven't played a complete or good game this season I think Maryland wins pretty easy. Maryland has way too much firepower for us to hang.....

lol. I called it last week: the next memorable BLJ quote would effectively be "mistakes were made."

Illinois offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. addressed the early play calling and being stopped in the red zone.

"Obviously, when you look back at things with hindsight, you say, well, was this the right call? We felt good about the call. And we didn't execute when we needed to execute.

I want to believe a turnaround of some kind is possible, but there's just so little you can do when your offensive line is getting rolled like this. We've already shuffled some people around looking for answers and it just seems like there's no lineup we can make from the players on our roster that blocks well enough to open up the playbook meaningfully.

Maybe Feagin can be Chase Brown, But Large.
Great name

bummer that excitement for this season has already more or less dissipated. Hope to see BB hire JL as DC and Paul Chryst as OC.

Maryland hasn't run up the score on offense compared to prior years and they also have struggled with slow starts spotting other teams early leads. That said this is a good team that has a lot of speed and whi has made very solid strides defensively. Their offense would be expected to stress our defense and on the other side of the ball, it's just difficult to expect much of any improvement from our o-line. And if we can't control clock and time of possession, this Maryland team will wear us down and it'll get ugly.

Overall, Maryland would need to show up just DOA for us to have any chance in this one in my opinion. Just not a good matchup for us as they have all the tools to exploit our team. That said, I half expect us to start out with a 10-0 lead before everything crashes in on us.

My pick:
Maryland- 38
Illinois- 17

This season:
5-1 ML
4-2 ATS

One thing we can hope for from a Locksley coached team: dumb mistakes and stupid penalties. Hopefully we take advantage.

I still can't figure out why Jordan Slalughter was pulling on 4th and goal from the 6" line.

I'm still stuck on calling a reverse on 2nd and 19 after Reggie Love lost 9 yards AND got hurt.

I really don't think I will ever get over that play call

42-7 bad guys.

MD looked good last week against a top 10 opponent. We...didn't, against a fellow bottom feeder.

This game will be in the middle of a full day of rain, which might make things sloppy enough for us to have a chance.

But I'm actually gonna predict a 3+ score loss....
