We have only had 3 All BIG defensive players....Chester Frazier (3 separate times), Randle and Egwu. Trent should be the 4th. Also he gets my vote for most loyal. He could have left at the coaching change (he was a Groce commit) and then after the NW game his Freshman year. Whitman played a key role both times in keeping him on board.

I live around a whole lotta VT fans, and they absolutely love Frazier down here. I'd love to see him back at his alma mater some day. Honestly he's probably the best defensive player I've seen play for us (earliest remembered games probably in 2003) and it seems like he brings that ethos with him as a coach.

As a fellow poster said it so nicely , that was "borderline criminal" that team didn`t win it all.....

The Illini team that finally cuts down the nets at the end of the NCAAs will have a few past teams they're avenging, that's for sure. The Whiz Kids, the Flyin' Illini, the 2005 group ... each one "deserved" to be National Champions. If this team, battling through a COVID season and led by a Chicago 5-star that bucked the trend and chose to stay home, could do that ... that'd be quite a story.

Anyway, as for tomorrow ... I'm expecting that Ayo doesn't play and that we give them a fight until the final 6-8 minutes where Michigan explodes into a 10-15 point lead. We'll make a rally but won't have enough time or gas left to close the gap. Still, this one is PURELY icing on the cake. If Ayo isn't 110%, as others have said, I don't want him out there. We have locked up the BTT 2-seed, and losing our next three games (BTT included) doesn't even seem like it could drop us below the 3-seed line for the NCAAs. Having him healthy for the Tournament is all that matters.

But ... can you imagine if we won at #2 Michigan without Ayo?

Yes I can. Seems like a long shot, but that doesn't stop me from imagining hard.

If curbelo has his best game of the year then I can see it happening. We need him to be a playmaker and not turn the ball over.

So if we have clinched 2nd place in the Big Ten Tourney, why play Ayo this week? He could use this week and most of next week to heal and avoid further injury. (Good chance Ayo might not like that, but it is an option.) It would, also, give our Ayo-less team a time to further mesh together.
We should be able to go 1-1 this week without Ayo. How rusty would he be when he comes back and to players who have picked up for him suddenly fall back? I think Ayo wants to play this week.

I would say we need both Curbelo and Ace to have career games along with a strong game from Kofi to be in this one without Ayo.
Assuming no Ayo, I actually wouldn’t hate a strategy of really upping our 3 point volume. We’ve shot the ball really well this year but tend to limit our attempts. Not maybe since the second half of @Northwestern have we been absolutely on fire from 3. I think we are due for a game where we shoot 13-27 or something from 3.

I love Curbelo. The kid is going to be a star. But, it seems highly unlikely for him to suddenly not turn the ball over. At this point in his career, his playmaking ability seems to be directly linked to the crazy antics he does on the court, which is also a big part of why he turns the ball over. I am not sure he has it in him (right now) to be that playmaker and avoid turning the ball over. I'd love for him to make me eat those words.

I don't think we need that to be in the game. This team has shown a lot of grit and has been in essentially every game this season. We will definitely need a few different people to step up to have a shot to win this, though.

Agreed. I’m honestly not sure he’ll ever get that out of his game. But I’d settle for eliminating the at least one or two bad plays a game that you can literally see coming prior to them happening. In the Wisky game as soon as he got the ball on the sideline after a steal or rebound I could see he was going to try and make that half court length bounce pass to I think it was Giorgi. I was screaming noooooo at the TV before he even took a dribble and started winding up for the pass. That was the first of 3 straight TOs by the team that stalled our momentum early on.

It is those plays that drive me crazy. If he can eliminate those and get stronger for next year, he’s gonna make a nice jump. But like you said, not likely happening before the UM game. Just got to take the good with the bad and hope there is more of the former than the latter.

I thought Dee was DPOY in 04-05. Also what was the issue in Trent's freshman year after the NW game?

Yeah, he may always be a high risk/high reward type player, but he could at least cut out the truly dumb, freshman-y turnovers.

We are going to be around 8 point dogs vs Michigan and probably 4ish vs Ohio State. How does that equate to we should be able to go 1-1? Going 1-1 would be fantastic, the odds say 0-2 is much more likely though.

If Curbelo could get a three point shot that teams have to respect defensively, that would be a huge help too. Team's just back off of him and pack the lane. If he can get defenders to bite with a shot fake, he's going to start embarrassing defenders.

I had the same reaction when I saw him wind up. It was something absurd, like a half-court bounce pass through multiple (3?) defenders to a moving target. It was a low percentage play, to describe it generously.

Honestly, we need everything to click. We need Kofi to have a great game, we need Curbelo to not turn it over, we need Trent/Adam/Da'Monte hitting from deep and we need Giorgi to do well when Kofi is out. The exciting thing is that it can happen, and if it doesn't ... so what? Move on to OSU.

I feel like even a pull-up midrange shot would do wonders. I know it's not the most efficient shot, but make a few of them and defenders will have to start playing him a little tighter, and then we know he'll be able to make plays with more room to work in the paint.

Good point on giorgi. He matches up really well with Austin Davis who is their backup center so we need him to just make shots.

IMO, if we play our best game, and Mich plays their best game, we lose by double digits (which is pretty much what the smart money is saying). I think our only hope is they get in foul trouble with Dickinson/Livers, and Wagner doesn't have the game he had vs OSU. With Brooks and Brown on the perimeter, Curbelo will have several unforced turnovers. He is loose with the ball, and that will not bode well against this team. Every time I see Mich play, they are pounding a good team-no one else in the country can make that claim. Mich has the ability to beat you from every position offensively, and play perhaps the best D in the league. They are big, deep, and talented. Clearly the best team in the conference, and I think the best in the country. When Kofi has to sit, they will hammer us on the boards. Dickinson will pull Kofi away from the basket which will be a problem for us, and Giorgi is a match-up mess for us. They may not win the NCAA with the one and done nature of the tournament, but they may, and the eye test tells you that any team that is 18-1 and 12-0 at home in this conference this yr is the cream of the crop. Too may ifs. If I'm betting the game, I would take the +9 with Michigan. Of course, that's why they play the game.

You are correct. I'm using the Big Ten media guide and it clearly lists Dee as the BIG 10 DPOY but under each of the teams it only lists Randle, CFrazier and Egwu. Not sure what to think of the listings.
Trent had a terrible game against NW at Rosemont his Freshman year. It was right before Xmas break and rumor was he was going to clear out his locker and go back to Florida and never come back. I'm glad that didn't happen.
