I'd love to feel like we will win tonight, but there are reasons we are a big underdog (maybe for the last time). It's at Mackey, they are #1, they play as a team too, they rebound well too, and they have Edey.

Tonight's goal is not lose our Mojo

I'll be happy if it's a competitive game, and lose by single digits.

But if we some how win, I'll be ecstatic !! Probably watching media recaps of the game until 2 am or so.

He’s already proved that in my mind. The togetherness and culture of this team. He keeps saying they’re “connected” and it shows.

Now we will see what that looks like in a HOSTILE environment on the road, with backs up against the wall. I think these boys have what it takes.
I guess I should have been more specific...I meant proving it non-illini fans. I still think a lot of people will think we are going to wilt without TSJ, even after the last two games...PU is a different beast, and if we go toe-to-toe, even without a win, it will say a lot about who we are this year.

I think it was hinted that BU kept starters on the court longer against NW, even when the game was well-in-hand, because he wanted to send a message about how good this team is...this is an opportunity for an even greater message to be sent.

Go Illini! Please refs no homecookie for Pu. Looking forward to this game. Do they put Renn on Domask if we start the booty ball.
I just hope they let Ty bring the ball across half court and minimize Domask doing this. Domask seems to have had several backcourt turnovers that have led to easy layups.

In a game like tonight’s at a place like Makey that could be a very unfavorable momentum swing.

Should the Beloved win tonight, I motion to dedicate the victory to my man Pru. After all, they will be 4-20 all time against #1's.

You are on a " roll " with the witty posts there Speed Racer.......it only took a snarky post from another poster to get you to " rev " up your cranial synapses and just be " blunt " with the " till I die " frame of mind......

I love it ...........I really really really do.......................

I’m excited for this game and my mind has been running wild with what I think both sides might do. Yes, I have problems, and also just drank some real strong coffee.

If I’m Purdue I’m 100% putting Edey on Ty again.
If I’m Illinois I have Ty set screens again.

Unless BU has specifically told an (unbeknownst to us) much better shooting Ty not to let it fly until this game to catch Purdue off guard (very unlikely, but coaches have been known to hide things, and we haven’t really needed it if he can), Edey can play his drop coverage and help on all drives.

This opens up a couple things for Ty.

1. Short rolls to the nail area where he can facilitate in the middle of the floor. We have good cutters and shooters he can find from there.

2. Ball screen, rescreens. After his Ball screen Ty goes and cleans up somebody else on an off ball screen that Edey can’t get out to. A 3 man game of Ty, Coleman, Domask would be very intriguing.

What concerns me is that Edey on Ty could take away one of his biggest matchup advantages, which is offensive rebounding from the pg position.

These ideas would be some real game specific wrinkles that we haven’t really shown. We usually just push quickly in transition, then run the most basic 5 out flow ever, move the ball, move bodies, and hoop. Like a well developed open gym offense when you got 4 teammates and you that just know how to play. We hardly run any plays that aren’t iso, and it’s beautiful.

The other thing Painter really likes to do is 1v1 the pg up the floor. Obviously if Edey is guarding Ty, he’s not doing that. Whoever Edey is guarding might be our PG, like we did against Kansas when we stayed away from whoever their good guard was checking defensively.

Again? Edey guarded Ty on exactly zero possessions in last year's game in WL. Where is everyone getting this idea that Edey is going to check our quickest/fastest guard (TSJ not playing, so this is Ty now)? The only way they put Edey on Ty is if Painter is trying to throw the game.

There's a condensed version of last year's game in WL on Youtube. I just watched it and in the 2nd half when we made our comeback, we threw tons of double & triple teams at Edey and it was really pretty effective. Granted, it was necessary since we got down by 20+ points, but makes me wonder if we might see more of that than what I originally thought.

Sometimes we hang Domask out to dry by not having an outlet for him in the backcourt. I feel like this is when he turns the ball over, getting his pocket picked. I hope regardless of who we have bringing the ball up, there is an option besides just having to take their man one-on-one.

I didn't watch Northwestern beat Purdue, but I assume they did it with a lot of trapping the post.

Definitely agree with this!!!

Minor correction: In 1978-79, after winning the Kentucky Invitational at Rupp in December and opening conference play with two road wins, Illinois was 14-0 and primed to take on #1 MSU. Eddie Johnson's corner jumper at the buzzer (as I remember it watching from the C section behind the basket) moved the Illini to 15-0. Alas, two days later Illinois lost to Ohio State in OT to forfeit their shot at the #1 ranking. As you say, the Illini collapsed after that, winning just 4 of the final 15 games to finish unranked.
I was in c-section too, directly behind and in line with EJ’s historic winning shot.

Had to look up some stats since I couldn't remember how last year's game at Mackey went - our only meeting with Purdue, and it was the regular season finale.

- We only lost by 5, but started out in an 11-0 hole and were down 10+ through most of the game before tying it up with a minute or so to play. Looks like this was another of our patented 2022-23 slow start -> insane comeback games.
- We held Edey to 6-of-13 shooting from the field and only 3 or 4 trips to the charity stripe, which would be huge to replicate.
- Total fouls were 23 (us) to 17. So, a moderate homering.
- Both teams had heavy success on the offensive glass, grabbing almost 40% of their misses.
- Mayer was 1 for 10 (!) from beyond the arc.
- It was a fairly slow-paced game with only 65 possessions.
- We had 15 turnovers, which is pretty high in a 65 possession game (23%)
There was serious butt puckering by the Purdue fans late second half last year.

I think you're right. There will be a point when Purdue will have the chance to go on a run and get the crowd really jacked up. If we withstand that we can make this close and then who knows what happens?
you're point of not losing our Mojo is very important with MSU coming to town playing their best ball and full of confidence. We really need one of these 2.

Are the students back
Their website says classes resume for spring semester on Jan 8th. So I would assume not all of them are yet. I think they will pack and be loud regardless, but not having the full compliment of their student section could be a lucky break.

My prop bets for the game:

Hawkins over 1.5 threes
Edey over 23.5 points
==================
Goode under 7.5 points
Edey under 11.5 rebounds.
