I think it is insane if anyone watch us and Washington Play and know what we have been without in our secondary vs IU. IU is the best team on our conference and likely the conference. We are on par with OSU and we moved the ball. We can not turn it over 3 or 4 times and expect to win but I want to play OSU again. I think we are between 2 and 5 in the conference is we play clean game. If we do that we beat Washington by 2 tds
Stop it. They beat us like a drum. Making comments like "we moved the ball" is an awfully low bar to set when comparing us to other teams. We were down 34-10 in the 4th before they took the foot off the gas. This was in our biggest game of the year, at home, on national TV, Fox Noon Kickoff in town, etc and we got our clocks cleaned.

THAT SAID, that doesn't translate over to the game against Washington. We're probably on par with them. Should be a good game, but we'll have to play our best game, on the road, to win.

With the Demond, Jonah, and Denzel to worry about on the Washington offense and an incredible home record combined with a rainy day when passing is our strong suit....i dont see a win here. I really hope im wrong but im seeing something like a 31-20 Washington win.

The game was lost by turnovers, aided by a few questionable noncalls. The data show we had both more total yardage and more first downs. And OSU averaged only 2.9 yards per carry, something few others (none?) have been able to do. I was impressed. Hang into the ball. Then hang on and growl!

I don't understand folks on here saying stuff like "we might be as good as them", etc.
Sheesh!
If both teams play error free ball, IMO we win. The team that wins the turnover battle is likely to win this one.
But...
I like our OL finally kickin it, and I think that will make a difference in general and especially in the rain.
Like like the experience of Luke to make a difference, too.

We turned the ball over man and punter knelt down. Our miscues of ball security on 3 plays inside our own 38 beat us. OSU did not dominate us. They just didn't fumble. We beat ourselves by careless fumbles. They did not beat us like a drum at all. IU did. The OSU loss came down to essentially 4 turnovers inside our 38 and refs swallowing the whistle on 3 PI s that were aggregious. Get real.

The game changed on the no call PI as we would have had the ball deep in OSU’s field. Worst case scenario, it’s 3-3 instead of 10-0. Punter doesn’t kneel down and we would have pinned them deep. Our mistakes and that bad call was worth 24 points to OSU. Different game if they called that PI.

Do those stadiums have rain shields reflecting sound from the stadium back down onto the field?

Stadium noise is a factor here.
Oh, it’s definitely a factor. But, we have played in stadiums that are equally loud. I think it is a little disingenuous to suggest that we are walking in to an environment louder and more imposing than we’ve ever faced.

Washington’s a good team no doubt about that. But a stat not enough people are talking about…

Here are Washington’s 5 wins and their rankings according to KFord:

99 Colorado St
FCS UC Davis
82 Washington St
60 Maryland
62 Rutgers

They have not beat a single top 60 team all year.

Whereas we have wins against:

44 Duke
10 USC

Which is why KFord has Illinois at 13 in their resume analytics and Washington at 30.

I’ll believe they can beat us if they do but not a second sooner.

Illinois: 31
Washington: 27

You'll see a lot of 5 man fronts from Washington I believe. Trying to stop KF and CV up the middle. A lot of cover 1 man, try and see if we can get separation and win 1 on 1 battles outside.

Illinois: I doubt we see lot of blitzes, keep their QB in the pocket. DL should have advantage over bad OL.

If they run a 5 man front Rusk should have a big game. That and run a lot of mesh routes.

I’m guessing we see the Jalon Daniel’s game plan for the defense

You make some great points. We did make some horrific plays and it definitely did effect the trend. That said, mistakes happen. Turnovers happen. We can't just ignore OSU's miscues. That's just part of it the ebbs and flows of a football game. The only one that I view as just reading ridiculous and outside of the realm of a standard football game was the punt disaster. That simply can't happen. We also only had 47 yards of rushing. Can't win like that. So, your point does hold water, yet, IMO, if we played them five games at home and five on the road, we'd lose 9.7 out of 10 times.

I'll take note from my first post. There's absolutely no correlation between that game and today's game vs Washington. They are very, very tough to beat at home. They have great athletes and taking the trip to the great Northwest is tough. We've yet to play a full game, where all four quarters, we just looked flat out good. It hasn't happened yet. That needs to happen today to win. Talent wise, we're very similar.

Mike White also thought a little rain did not hurt the passing game. Hopefully it leads to Washington turning over the ball early and often
Was interesting to hear John Paddock explain on WDWS yesterday morning that contrary to what one might think, QBs are taught to hold the ball LESS firmly when it's wet. He explained that a firm grip on a wet ball leads to more slips. Don't think I'd ever heard that approach/explanation before. Hope they had Luke practice holding a baby bird this week. 😆

Well, those few plays we are referring to are fairly random. As a matter a fact Illinois leds the conference in forced fumbles. They were unable to in that one game but if that one stat was flipped it's very likely we win that game. I don't know what our avg yards per play compared to thiers was but imo that matters more for offense efficiency. We ran enough to keep them honest and be effective moving the football. If turnovers had been even or in our favor which is actually reasonable then that game is very winnable. We clearly disagree about our thoughts on how good OSU is. I think IU is a lot better.

I think it will be a good game for us, but I'll state the obvious. If all three backs play like they can and don't get hurt, and we can avoid those momentum-killing turnovers, the weather could be to our advantage. If we continue to have these bad turnovers and lose guys in the backfield, it could be a rough game.

Let's see Luke warm up FAST and be on target. If we keep all three backs healthy and hold onto the ball, we can walk out of there 6-2.

Our "can't get off the field on 3rd down" defense was on full display vs. OSU. OSU was 8/15 on 3rd down conversions, incl. several 3rd & 10+ yards. My take is that had we not given OSU short fields with our turnovers/punt mistake, that they would have gone on long, sustained, time consuming scoring drives, giving us less possessions and much less time-of-possession (which was already OSU 33:11 ILL 26:39). This Illinois team would be very good and CFP deserving if we had even a mediocre defense (currently 14th/18 B1G in defensive yards allowed per game).
