If I am interpreting this correctly, it looks like Utah is one of the best teams at pushing their opponents to an uncomfortably fast tempo (#3), while Illinois creates somewhat of an opposite affect (#218). For a comparison, West Virginia is ranked #31 in adjusted tempo on KenPom, and that was a big struggle for Illinois.
Central Michigan is #16 in adjusted tempo. It looks like BYU plays faster by about one possession every ten minutes.

I believe WVU was a struggle because of the press, not necessarily the pace at which they played.

In terms of percentage, Jalen Coleman-Lands and Michael Finke are currently the #5 and #6 shooters on the team from 3pt range, respectively.

Tracy Abrams is currently #4 in America in 3pt shooting at 64.1%. He has made more three pointers and is averaging more PPG than the three players ahead of him.

Malcolm Hill shot 39% from 3pt range as a sophomore and then regressed last season. He's experiencing the same kind of senior bounce Rayvonte Rice did a few years back. I don't know if he will continue to hit 43% from beyond the arc, but I don't think he'll drop much below 40%. He's getting good looks and shooting with supreme confidence.

I think we're all expecting some normalization. Even if Abrams shoots more like 35% the rest of the way, he's definitely become a dangerous weapon from the perimeter. If JCL and Finke can replicate their freshman performance shooting the ball, we will be one of the best shooting teams in the B1G. I really hope those guys--esp. JCL--snap out of their funk and start torching the nets. We should have a few games this year where three of our four top shooters are feeling it; in those games, we'll be very, very hard to beat.

Yeah, it would really help to get Finke and JCL back on track. We make a good % of 3s, just need to take a few more and those 2 are the likely guys. Shift some of the mid range game to 3s would help the offensive efficiency greatly. We're actually doing a decent job of getting to the FT line and converting there, something that has been lacking recently.

I believe WVU was a struggle because of the press, not necessarily the pace at which they played.

Agreed. We probably don't really want to play as fast as BYU, but they don't force turnovers so it's not going to be a problem. IMO we'll be able to dictate the pace we want.

BYU Podcast was kind of funny. "If we shoot over 40% from the 3 we're running away with this game". Quick stats check - as a team they shoot 30% and no one shoots over 40%. Hmmm...

Those are looking like 100 - 120 dollar seats from what I can see.

hmm, I didn't even look at resale tickets for the MD game since it is not close to being a sellot. I went to their website and got a 2-pack promo for $67 delivered. Two lousy tix and a $10 concession credit for the price, with the hope of moving to better seats as the game goes along.

I know everyone is excited for Kipper's debut but I would really hope we can temper expectations. I'm not even sure where Kipper's minutes are going to come from whenever DJW can't even get consistent minutes, and he's the player with a higher ceiling IMO.

Agreed that expectations should be tempered but I think they are for the most part. If Kipper plays solid defense, he will earn minutes regardless if he has a lower ceiling or not. It might be just 5 mpg, but I could see 10 mpg as well if he can show versatility against bigger players.

I hope Kipper plays well, but I have an honest question. Where do people believe his minutes will come from? As far as I know he plays the 3 or 4. Obviously at the 3 you have Hill and a limited amount of backup minutes. At the 4 you Black backed up by Finke. I don't see him playing the 2 and Hill is best staying at the 3. Does he take the limited backup 3 minutes from DJW and AJ? Perhaps. Does he challenge Finke for the backup 4? A little less likely. If he can play strong defense I would like to see him on the court, but if he plays someone else loses minutes.

Supposedly he can defend the 2, 3 or 4. I am guessing he plays no more than 5-6 minutes against BYU.

I predict if he can play D and if he plays the 4, JG says he doesn't teach Freshman more than one position (though he technically RS'ed). If he does, I think he averages 5-10 mins there a game. I think at the 3, we will see something like how AJ and DJW have been used. All three wont see the floor much at all, two may, and one will most likely dominate the reliever role each game, though as far as im concerned Groce has been flipping a coin to determine who.

The real question is--where does Groce get a three sided coin? Or does he use a die now and give each play two numbers...

Kipper might be so good that it is obvious he gets minutes and from "who" becomes less important. Probably outside of the coaches and players, nobody knows the answer. He passes the eye test both in bb terms and physically.

Might push JCL for SG minutes or allow Hill more of a breather. On the conservative end he might be the 10th or 11th guy and be more of an option next year.

Haha fair enough I've never seen them play this year so I'm just parroting what I heard:)

Maybe that is why he "used" to work for them. BYU is 287th in the country in 3FG and 299th in 3FG%. Where we need to be concerned is they are 16th in the country in rebound margin.

+1 They still play uptempo but are much more interior based than years past. The interior emphasis has much to do with Mika being their best player.

I hope he is that good and that he leads to someone getting put on the pine. At least he should provide competition for backup minutes which could improve the quality of play of the bench.

Our bench has been weak so there's opportunity to take minutes at the 3 and 4. It's not like we have a steady rotation of proven players off the bench. We play certain guys out of necessity not because of a talent surplus. We would play Black and Hill all game if we could but we can't. I don't see him getting many minutes in his first game though.

My hope is he allows TA to play at the 1 exclusively which essentially takes minutes from Tate.

The Kipper hype is really growing. Who was the last ILL player with this much anticipated hype for a debut?
