Get to know the Loyola Ramblers!

9th in KenPom, 10th in NET rankings, 3-2 against Quad 1 (losses at Wisconsin, Drake, wins at Drake and neutral vs Drake and neutral vs Georgia Tech), 4-2 against Quad 2 (losses at Indiana State and neutral vs Richmond, wins at Missouri State x2, at Indiana State, and vs North Texas).

They run at almost the slowest tempo in D1 (342nd of 355 teams), which makes their already good defense look better than it is and limiting possessions (think Wisconsin but good defensively).

Offensively, they excel at shooting (adjusted eFG is 9th in the nation), but not offensive rebounding or FT generation, and are middle of the road in committing turnovers.

Defensively, they limit fouls, control the defensive boards, generate turnovers, and limit effective FG%.

Best win is probably the game they just played, or an 81-54 win at Drake in February. Worst loss was a 5-point loss to Indiana State way back in early January.

Typical starting lineup is 6'0" 180 lb Braden Norris, 6'1" 180 lb Keith Clemons, 6'4" 208 lb Lucas Williamson, 6'7" 235 lb Aber Uguak, and 6'9" 255 lb Cameron Krutwig. Norris and Clemons are their long distance shooters, while Uguak is shooting almost 72% from 2 point range. Krutwig is the center of the offense, and their primary distributor. They like to work it into Krutwig, wait for teams to double him, and he'll pass out to open shooters. Defensively, Williamson is the steals generator while Krutwig prevents teams from getting ORs.
I thought Williamson was taller watching the game yesterday. Damonte can definitely guard him when he comes in off the bench. Guessing Ayo covers him to start the game

Loyola is obviously a good team and they deserve a lot of credit for the season they’ve had- but they are no match for us

Krutwig is what makes their offense go - he will have to dominate Kofi for them to have a chance - if Kofi/Giorgi just play Krutwig to a standstill we are so much better at every other position. They depend on open threes from Krutwig kicking it back out- we can take our chances with Krutwig one and one and not leave open shooters

while stranger things have happened in the tournament this game should not be close

The problem is Krutwig with the ball at top of key.....covering the 3 point shooters, but those shooters breaking to the basket for a layup. Krutwig is a very good passer. Pick your poison.

Wouldn’t we just have Kofi stay deep and let Krutwig shoot (it doesn’t look like he’s attempted a 3 in a couple of years) and stay tight in everyone else and switch all the picks? Similar to what we did against Michigan?

If they are going to beat us it will have to be 1-1 off the dribble or Krutwig scoring on Kofi down low. I like our chances

my son , the OkSt grad (& part time Illini fan ) lives & works in Boston . He gets up at 5:30 am for his job . The ‘pokes game v Oregon St doesn’t start until 9:40 pm there . that game won’t be over until midnight
And the answer is : DVRs are great!

How are we feeling about Loyola? Personally I’d much rather play them than Wisconsin or Missouri. Also, they aren’t flying under the radar anymore. Underwood will have the team ready to go. Line is -7, I think we cover.

So... more than a little dose. Remember, when in the low post wrestling for the remote: they have a lower center of gravity, which can be to your detriment and lead to you picking up a couple early ones that will put you on the bench.

And sorry for the puns. I feel a certain level of self-consciousness about piling on in the recruiting thread the past few days but can't quite let go yet.
Not to mention the ref (aka "Your Spouse") will always side with the smaller player.

"They're not going to beat the Illinois" He said it three times before correcting himself to "Illini." Just love Barkley.
And he loves the illini....he'll have the name down in a couple of weeks.. by the first round of final four.

I was talking to my girlfriend yesterday about my outlook going forward for our Illini, and I said Sunday is the last game we could lose that has the ability to completely tarnish the goodwill of the season. That's JMO, but damn ... can't lose to a small instate school (much less one the Chicago media would salivate over) in the Second Round when our program has this type of momentum. It would be disastrous for the continued improvement of "Illini Basketball" as a brand, especially in the Chicago area. I told her that if we lose to an Oklahoma State in the Sweet Sixteen or a Houston in the Elite Eight, it will be VERY disappointing, but you could chalk it up to a bad game and "March Madness" ... losing this one would qualify as a disaster.

With that said, I think we got the NCAA Tournament jitters out of our system early yesterday, and I think we come out firing on all cylinders and put them away! I predict a game very similar to the UW-Milwaukee Sweet Sixteen game in 2005, where we play well early but our underdog opponent hangs with us early due to their own great play. However, as the game goes on, we pull away.

(8) Loyola (Chicago) 68
(1) #2 Illinois 80

Let's keep this rolling!

We are getting the national title contender treatment with the 1110 am cbs time slot with no other games going on and Nantz/Raftery/Hill broadcast team. I wish we were going to be in Lucas oil for ticket availability but that isn’t happening until the elite 8 for us. Looks like tickets are 350 and up for Sunday On secondary market.
This was always the ‘Duke destroying some hapless 9-seed in Greensboro’ time slot back in the day.

Use the Michigan game plan and keep it a 2 on 2 game in the pick and roll. Our wings will need to lockdown the 3 point line, which we have been successful at doing.

If Kofi gets into foul trouble, Giorgi will be more than serviceable on Krutwig.

We have the depth to wear them down and pull away late. I’d much prefer pull away early and extend throughout, but Loyola will be trying to also win, or something like that.

I was at that game and I would be very happy with a repeat. One thing I do predict is massive over-exposure to Sister Jean.

^ That is one of the 2005 Illini games that is available in full on YouTube, so I have watched some of it. It looks like it would be an AWESOME game to watch in person. The arena sounds electric, and both teams came out on fire. Plus, beating Bruce Pearl had to be fun! I am kind of hoping for a similar opportunity with Houston and Kelvin Sampson, though my bracket has the Scarlet Knights taking them down!

Here is a video on Loyola's defensive strategy. There is a section on how Richmond and Wisconsin attacked it with quick guards, and how another weakness is that Krutwig is a poor pick and roll defender. That plays into 2 of our strengths.

Interesting breakdown of their defense. There are a couple of things that I can see our guards possibly struggling with, specifically the lack of weak side corner help on baseline drives. But overall, it actually gives me more belief that the team will be successful tomorrow as I think we have too many options and ways to score for them to adequately defend.

Yeah. I have missed many games over the years.
First half of 70% of Packers games all 5 years I lived on the west coast. I don’t miss that.

The Illini are driving a Ferrari, and Loyola is chugging along in a Rambler. Who wins that race is not exactly a stumper.
