The win over Wake Forrest was the loudest crowd I've ever been a part of
2/20/1982vs. #8 MinnesotaW 77-6515-8 (8-6)Assembly Hall (16,578)
Champaign, I

Senior in High School. B section behind the basket. Derek Harper was great that game.

And so loud.

Was listening to Piper on the radio earlier today. He seemed to think Brad (and CH) was trolling MSU.

For several years, despite Ayo becoming one of the most prominent players in the league, Izzo referred to him as Aye-Oh (rather than Eye-Oh). At about the 1:40 mark Brad calls an MSU player as Hah-gard (Piper said CH did too, but at about the 4:30 mark he says his name 2x and I'm hearing Hoe-gard).

What do you think, purposeful or accidental?

Yeah, the fans were dialed up to 11 that afternoon. We could use a lot more of that attitude and passion at SFC. My 72 year old mother gets pissed at how quiet the people around her are.

My mindset this year with both football and basketball is to be the change you want to see.

Personally, I never thought Izzo's mispronunciation was that disrespectful. It's a name he probably only has to say a few times a year and it's not like it's phonetically obvious for an English speaker.

My own grandpa spelled my name wrong for years on my birthday cards. 🤣

It happens.

So, no, I doubt it's intentional by BU. But if it is, I'm here for the Elite pettiness.

re: loudest at AH? for me, maybe Jan 1989 vs G Tech. All we had to do was win and be #1, went down 16-18 points, came storming back to force OT, won in 2OT. It was pretty loud last year when MSU was shooting the FTs with a second to go - the noise was definitely a factor in missing
2020 Iowa game right before Covid shut down the planet. Garza got blocked by Kofi to end the game. I couldn’t hear my buddy next to me. It was awesome.

1998 home game Michigan State--won to share Big 10 title. Loudest I've been too (many many games)

That, to me, is the standard by which all Assembly Hall/SFC crowds are judged. Had never heard it that loud before and haven’t heard it that loud since. Something magical was in the air that night.

Your grandpa couldn’t spell “21”?

Was at that game in '89 --my first Illini game as a grad student. Couldn't believe the comeback and the crowd enthusiasm!

We’re favored by 7! How can that be?

Analytics my friend!! If you scroll back in this thread I posted some stats of how this Illini game would be similar to the Wisconsin game. MSU doesn't get their opponents into foul trouble (sub300 FTR on offense) nor do they turn their opponent over much (sub300 in TO rate on D). They play methodical basketball. This allows the Illini to setup their half court D more easily without risk of fouling and also get into their offensive sets much easier. Also it's a home game and there's a big gap in KenPom rankings too.

I took my shot at the line and said Illini - 4.5. I guess I was too conservative haha.
