.They go over every ball screen because they want to force guys into 2's with a rearview contest and they play exclusively drop coverage in ball screens which fits the personnel they have.
And sure, when the other team has average ability from 3 and average ability from midrange, that's a great gameplan. But when they other team is bad at 3's and good at midrange 2's (like MSU is), it seems to some of us casual fans that the math changes, and the gameplan should too. What's the rationale for not changing in that situation? Lack of practice?
Especially where the other team has already shown us that they will try to draw fouls on KJ by pulling up when he's chasing over a screen.

Agree with your point, but "To be FAIR..." we also had like the 2nd best offense in the country last season so figured by February that we could pretty much just outscore everybody we played. Worked out pretty decently too until we just happened to face the one team in the country where that wasn't necessarily the case.
to be fair letterkenny problems GIF

It’s part of who we are, we want to be physical and relentless on D and that’s part of it. It’s also really hard on the opposing players on O when you know you’re going to get that going over and fighting through screens the entire time. Also no one is good at shooting contested mid range jumpers, we just have to do a better job of rearview contesting w/ MSU and they didn’t shoot it well in our first match up. With KJ he has to do a better job of showing his hands to make sure he doesn’t get the ticky tack stuff

Limited practice time. You want to work on the stuff you run 90% of the time in practice time you have. We are also much better man to man team than zone team. Also limited time to work on BLOBs and SLOBs which is why teams don't have that many actions for them just a few core ones they rin We've thrown it in as a wrinkle for a few possessions.
Bingo.

People don't understand that there's a TON of communication and intricacies that come to running an effective zone. There's not enough time to get to a point where we can lean on it outside of to just use it to change things up for a couple of possessions.

Heck, we're still working on our base defense which springs leaks. Part of the problem with having such a young team and a team that never played together prior to this year is that once you roll out your philosophy.....that's what you're rolling with all year, obviously with adjustments. If 90% of this group were coming back next year....it'd be feasible to take the time to install that as a legitimate option. With all of the injuries and Illnesses, this team is still figuring out roles....and some aren't finding one.

From a former college coach.....They go over every ball screen because they want to force guys into 2's with a rearview contest and they play exclusively drop coverage in ball screens which fits the personnel they have. It's also a mindset of being tougher than everyone else and going over on average shooters to keep that mindset and toughness for when we play good ones. % game on 2 point shots.

As for zone...If they went to a zone Izzo would carve it up with specials and then rebound IL out of it. And you don't zone when your the best rebounding team in the country 🤣
So why did we play drop with Coleman at the 5?

If we can't communicate well enough or execute well enough to run man to man, we won't be able to play zone. Zone is arguably harder to teach and execute than m2m. Plus, it neuters our rebounding advantage.
Having played both successfully, a good zone defense can be as intricate as MtM defense If you want to be good at both, players must want to know exactly how to move their feet and shade in any offensive set or threat. For zone, we worked hard at it and stopped practice whenever we had any questions as to how to play the situation. Too often, a zone defense is pretty much set up to stop a hot shooter and big threat in the middle. Good teams get around that with quick ball movement.

In the case of our Illini, their MtM defense is pretty sophisticated and depends on every guy knowing what to do in all situations. Unfortunately, when a team starts making every shot from the arc, nothing much is effective. Coach will say you need to close faster....and then you do and watch him go by for some circus shot to finish. If guys make shots, the defense will sometimes feel useless.

But i do agree that flashing a zone for a few possessions can slow a hot team down....but whoever is on the court needs to understand what they need to do. Too many times you see guys failing to block out in a zone defense, Can't have that.

That’s not what you said after the Loyola loss. 😂 (Nah, just messing with ya.)

That’s probably right. It can clearly be done. But yeah, to do it well you prolly need the reps in, on it. Could be tough headhunting bodies out of it on the boards I s’pose.

I am still lol that it was a one-possession game at the end in EL and we could easily have won it. I mean, BU must have smiled at Izzo in the handshake line: "Yeah, the refs beat us but we owned you this afternoon, in your own house, w/o our 20+ ppg star."
That result was ( as I said in another post) bewildering to me when you look at the game stats........Now it looks like KJ is as close to 100 % since the injury occurred and DOES NOT bode well for zero-izzo this time out.......

Here's hoping high knees-low skills ref jeff is not running lead blocker in this game and prancing on another games action than ours.........what a buffoon.....Not in all my years watching MBB games have I ever witnessed such a shameful blunder as what he did.......awful ref.....he really really is.........

I think we win this game by a comfortable margin but will wait closer to game time before my prediction.....

Might need to open the Walken Coffee Shop for a pregame feast..........If I do , then don't forget to......................

Indiana zoned Michigan St that resulted in a win at East Lansing. Don't understand how Illinois doesn't throw out a zone for multiple trips on Saturday
I know learning how to play a zone well can be difficult and is very dependent on having the right players and everyone knowing where the other is but I'm surprised more team don't switch up defenses give opposing teams a different look.

Don't have to play in it for long stretches but why not occasionally run a trapping press after a made basket(especially if an opposing pg is on the bench), just pick up full court man occasionally, throw in some different zone looks like. 2-3, 3-2, or 1-3-1.

Could even just be a different look for a single possession.

When we can't play defense in the paint vs teams like MD and MSU and guards are blowing by our guards in man to man.....

we all revert back to our HS careers where we zoned up to stop the other teams center or hide bad defenders

Fire Hamer and hire someone who can teach a zone defense … 🤷🏻‍♂️

And someone who can also figure out you might wanna guard the guy who’s absolutely torching you from 3 last night …

Just my thoughts … 🤷🏻‍♂️😂

It’s hard to fathom guys at this level who’ve been playing basketball their entire lives couldn’t learn how to play even a mediocre zone in a couple of practices.

Either I am really losing my mind, or we DID play some mediocre zone for a bit in a game this year. Can't remember which game, but pretty sure I didn't dream it.
