College Player Files $3M Claim with Lloyd’s for Drop in NFL Draft

LOST LOV: A ONCE-BUSTLING MARKET FOR COLLEGE-ATHLETE INSURANCE FALLS ON HARD TIMES

Players projected to be chosen in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft are eligible to purchase this insurance to protect against a career ending injury with a loan against their future income. The maximum pay-out is $10 million and can cost anywhere between $1000–8000 per $1 million insured depending on position and injury history. The loan is repayable either when the player signs a professional contract, a claim is made or the policy expires. This type of policy is also available privately and the only successful claim has been by Ed Chester in 1998.
The second article you linked pretty much details why offering LOV insurance may not be enough to persuade top end players from opting out of lower tier bowls. The article states that for top football prospects, the annual premium in 2018 was around $100,000...not sure the cost for one individual game, but I am sure it is higher than the $1,000-8,000 you mentioned, which is low end costs from 2015 per the article. The premiums are super expensive and a lot of hassle to try and get a payout should an injury occur. Insurance in general is a major headache (think about all the hoops you have to jump through to get an auto or homeowners claim to go through; these policies are likely worse), and over an entire season, these policies make sense for players. However, for one game that does not mean winning a championship, the costs may seriously outweigh the benefits from both sides of the equation (those offering NIL deal and the player).

Agreed. It's reflective of the essential meaninglessness of the bowls and why no player on a playoff team sits out - no matter what their draft expectations. It's why the NFL Pro Bowl effectively ended because there was no point and only downside for players to participate. College Basketball doesn't have this problem for the obvious reason that anybody in the post season still has a shot at the title. I would imagine that the NIT has a similar problem with regard to stars sitting it out and preparing for the draft process instead.
Ohio Sate's Jaxon Smith-Njugba is opting out. OSU is in the playoff

Yeah I have to admit I'd watch that LOL
It would be like watching our 5-7 2021 team.

I know there is not much financial upside to playing in bowl game. But same is true for playing for your country in World Cup, Olympics, Ryder Cup, World baseball classic, Fiba basketball world championships, Davis Cup etc.

Playing for your school and teamates to win a bowl game to cap a great season should mean something to you. Hopefully schools can find a way by offering insurance and NIL payments so your are not taking undue risk and have some upside for playing. Get working on in Josh!!!!

Are you really trying to compare playing in a mid tier bowl game to representing your country? Not to mention in almost all these cases, professional athletes get waivers from their team to play, and already have massive contracts. The teams generally hold the insurance package to protect their investment. Apples to oranges comparison.

I get that you think NIL payments and offering insurance will entice players to not opt out. This may work for some mid to late round projected players but it will not likely be enough to get a projected first or second round pick to play. If it were this simple, you would not be seeing all these opt outs. This is a business for the players, plain and simple. I am sure Josh and team are working on this, but they also want what is best for their players. If they play, great; if they don't, I will completely support their choice and look forward to seeing them play on Sunday next year.

Gonna have to disagree with the scalding hot take that there is no financial upside for playing in the largest sporting events on the planet.

I hope all our players choose to play in the Bowl Game. Chance to represent your school, teamates, national TV, road trip on University tab. Whats not to like.

My son was coached by a Notre Dame all american safety that was in combine but did not make it out of NFL training camp. He played in Italy before league was shut down by Covid and AAF before it went bankrupt. He would give anything to play in another bowl game.

Very few college players make it in NFL. Enjoy the fame and crowds while you can!

I'm glad that my impression on first glance was wrong - I thought the bottom right was a photo of BB at a buffet table.

I'd like to keep him around a while, somebody get him a subscription to Noom or Jenny Craig!
For crying out loud, the man's weight is between him and his doctor. You don't know anything about his health beyond what you assume, based solely on appearances.

There's enough of this potshotting on the Internet without even Illini fans joining in. Sheesh.

I am going to the game. The only time I have been to Raymond James stadium the 2004/5 basketball team blew out Wake Forest at the same time. Expecting the same Illini dominance

We did a corporate event for a sorta pass, kick, punt thing on the field. I got to catch the end of the basketball game at dinner in a suite

World Cup earns players a lot of money let alone endorsements. You are right about the Olympics

The Illinois Ticket Office emailed me my seat location for the bowl game this afternoon.

Got mine too. Sec 123, the middle end zone section, behind the goal posts. Look for the Chief flags on TV (flags without a pole are on the list of things allowed into Raymond James stadium. Would like to see many, many Chief flags in the stadium. I'll be bringing as many as I can round up).

So nice of the Illinois ticket office to offer worse seats than you could have gotten on Ticketmaster the day the game was announced...and for the same price.

its no change from the past. if you want to sit amongst fellow orange shirt wearing fans, then buy from the UI office.
But if you dont care who is sitting around you ( I dont) , then buy from the open market.

I am on the 45 yard line through Illinois, so you can get good seats. There were 2 price levels, so maybe they chose the lower price level to get end zone.
