An historical note off topic: The first basketball game was played on this date in 1891. The final score was 1-0 which proves how important free throw shooting is and always has been from day one.

I was at U of I from 80 to 84...great years in both basketball and football. I am also from Moline, so Iowa has always been enemy #1. However, I do have a healthy hatred of Miznoz as well, and this game is a very big deal.
You know who else is from Moline? Fred Garvin, male prostitute. For those of you too young to understand that reference, look it up...makes you proud to be a Quad City native!

We are so so lucky to have guys like TSJ, Ayo and many others who are both great players and high character guys that have been with the program. The core of this year's team is really mature, and there's a group of promising guys that should be next up. Just from the view of the games, Underwood seems to be enjoying coaching this season more too. Gonna try and savor this one. Never know when you're going to get an All American, and Underwood's had several.

Yes, but you have to keep a couple things in mind. The ball was a big roundish rock (Wilson, Spaulding and Nike were not manufacturing basketballs yet)... players had to dodge dinosaurs who were still roaming the grounds... and nobody had the arm strength to throw that rock in from the 3-point line.

But at least ESPN did carry the game... except no one knew what television was yet.

I’m kinda diggin’ this Bayesian rating system, and thought it would be interesting to use it to forecast matchups.

Mizzou’s top guys are:
Offense
Carter (6’6” 235), East (6’3” 180), Bates (6’5” 195)
Defense
Vanover (7’5” 230), Nobody (haha!)

If Coleman can pull the Lanky Lumberjack out of the post, or we can get him into foul trouble, they do not seem able to guard much at all.

Team national rankings: Illinois #12, Missouri #79

Highlighted rows are offensive rating, defensive rating, combined rating (rank column is how the players stack up within their respective conferences)…

Illini fans sit on the south side of arena.
Same side as Blues attack twice.

I'm thinking that this game is not going to reflect the chaos of the prior season, where certain players were primarily interested in themselves and secondarily interested in the team. I feel that a proper beat down is in order...
Let's f'ing gooooooo!

Apologies if this has been mentioned, but I watched the Sleepers Podcast about this game...I like those guys, and they clearly both like Illinois. It's worth a listen.

Also, they have another that goes over fun drinking games for the Illinois/Miznoz game...funny stuff.

We were 15 point favorites vs Colgate at home.

I'll guess Illini -4.5 at neutral site.
I'm seeing Illini -6.5 early this morning. Vegas seems confident.

And so am I. I'll take our seniors to cover --- over Mizzou's 3-point shooting and excellent guard play. We've had ample prep time and these vets know how to execute a plan. (Missouri will probably come out ablazin' like they always do.)

79 ILLINI
67 MIZNOZ

(Last year was my second Braggin’ Rights Game.)

Actually, neither team brought their bands OR cheerleaders due to the winter storm. We were worried that it would affect general attendance, as well, and really dilute the atmosphere. After my first game (2021-22) being a blowout with Mizzou’s side about 30% full, I was bummed.

However, we were pleasantly ecstatic when we walked in and saw that both fan bases had braved the weather and nearly packed the place! That was a nice surprise … and then the game started, lol. We can’t go this year, but I REALLY look forward to the day I make it to Braggin’ Rights with a full crowd, plus the band and cheerleaders.
Im going. I will have a drink in your honor!
