Best non-tourney neutral site environment in college sports IMO. This will be the first time I’ve missed being there since I think 2008. As others have said, let’s crush them (or more likely, gut out a close win in a bare-knuckle brawl).

I think this is the year we 94-56 them.

Game prediction:
Early run by Miznoz then go ice cold
Plummer has a hot first half
Kofi gets 10+ FT attempts
Illini gets 1 taunting technical
Grandison has a Illini "career best" game
Trent hits a dagger.......right before he's pulled with 3:30 on the clock....
.....because the game is out of reach.
Illini 86
Miznoz 60

It’s definitely a bummer, because it conversely used to be a guaranteed neutral site date with a quality opponent every year, more often than not being a win. There are rivals I’d just assume continue to be bad (looking at you, IU!), but Mizzou being THIS bad is not good for us.

I want us to be the clearly superior program every year, but I don’t want them to be a joke. Not good for our SOS, and it’s not good for the rivalry - and by extension, it’s less of a “perk” of being both an Illini fan and player to have the mystique of the Braggin’ Rights guaranteed each year. FWIW, it looks like the lower bowl on the Mizzou side is almost sold out, so at least it won’t look lame on TV (even if those fans will be wearing orange!).

Plus, as a fan that has gone to this game many times...I wish this rivalry would get the national credit it deserves. It really is one of, if not, the best neutral court game in the country. The enivronment is electric, the whole city is buzzing, the bars are full of fans before and after, and everyone is in a fun festive mood.

But most people outside of Illinois and Missouri don't even know this is a rivalry game. If both programs could have a few years of sustained success together, then this game would be a must watch for any basketball fan.

Sounds kinda like the old days of Norm Stewart vs . Lou Henson when both teams had very good players .....the hate has always been there between the teams and fans....what's been lacking lately is relevant team's success and prominence in the college BB world..............

I really dislike misery and all components of that program ....................I really really do.................................

I think they are gonna put a can of whoop a** on us this year .......................

I bet this will feel like a home game. I don't think too many Mizzou fans are going to want to watch this.

I don't think BU has ever beat them before, or Trent, or DMW. They want this. And they have to have this.

I've been wrong many times, but I predict a beatdown.

That's right. That initial year. We were horrid, but did beat Missouri. Still thinking they're smarting from the previous 3 years' losses, especially last year (that one smarted).

I don’t see us dropping this game, I just don’t. Not with the Kofi advantage and Plummer/Trent/Grandison shooting the way they have been. I doubt all 4 of those shut off at once.

I’ll be watching from Champaign, but will be cheering on our boys loud and proud.

Edit: I totally didn’t realize that Mizzou has won the last 3. Hahaha. Doesn’t change my opinion.

Yep, that is certainly the case now. My formative sports years were 2001-2006, however, and I actually do remember feeling like this was a pretty hyped game on the national stage. From 2000-01 to 2015-16, it was on one of the main two ESPN channels. Since then, it has only appeared on ESPN2 in 2017-18, and it has been on BTN or SECN three times. :( A lot of this comes with the competitiveness of the teams, as just as we started to make a turnaround, Mizzou really went downhill. From 1998-99 to 2005-06, at least one team was ranked in every single game, with BOTH teams being ranked in half of those years.

Really, are there any other current non-conference "rivalry events" that would even come close if both teams were consistently good? Braggin' Rights is very much in the mold of several traditional football rivalry games at neutral sites, such as Georgia/Florida (Jacksonville, FL) and Texas/Oklahoma (Dallas, TX), where fans are split at midfield. If there is another basketball equivalent, I am honestly unaware of it. Braggin' Rights is special in that aspect, and when you add on the years of tradition, the unique "Christmas feel" and the bad blood between the fan bases, it really is a special event.

Does Louisville and Kentucky still play? Other than that, I got nothing.

I'd say Texas vs. Texas A&M but neither fanbase gives a hoot about basketball. And they don't generally play each other ever since A&M left for the SEC.

Missouri vs. Kansas would be the other cross-conference basketball rivalry that is similar. Whether or not Mizzou fans care more about the Illinois game or the Kansas game depends on which side of the state they're from.

I believe they do, but I meant more the specific setup we have, with fans divided 50/50 at midcourt in a neutral city that is an important market for both programs. This is why I have long been VERY much against a home-and-home with Mizzou; it makes it just another game. Frankly, I wish there would have been a way we could have kept the football game in St. Louis, but not on the first weekend. As for basketball examples that could hypothetically be cool, I can really only think of a couple (limiting it to non-conference games for logistical reasons):

1) Missouri vs. Kansas in Kansas City, MO - Don't want this one to happen, as it simply takes away attention from Braggin' Rights, but it would be pretty cool...

2) Rutgers vs. Syracuse in New York, NY (Madison Square Garden) - I think this would be cool. You could also replace one of them with UConn or another similar program, but this is probably the "coolest" potential example I thought of.

3) Iowa vs. Iowa State in Des Moines, IA - I think this would be the closest parallel to a "Braggin' Rights feel."

4) Maryland vs. Virginia in Washington, DC - You could also throw Virginia Tech in there (I remember seeing once they seem to have a lot more fans in the DC Metro than UVA), but they haven't been quite as big of a basketball draw.

5) Texas vs. Texas A&M in Houston, TX or Dallas, TX - This one would only work for a few more years, but it's the only other "cool" example I could think of. I have gotten the impression that Dallas is more of a UT town and Houston is more of an A&M town, but I believe they both have huge fan bases in each.

6) Indiana vs. Kentucky in Louisville, KY - I put this lower because there is literally no way in hell UL would allow them to use their arena for this, lol. You could do this one in Indianapolis, too, but that isn't really a "true neutral site," though I have no doubt UK would fill up its half.

Long-winded point being that Braggin' Rights is very unique and quite cool. :)

Since its heyday, more and more conferences have created their own networks to cash in. Because Fox controls BTN, they wouldn't want to give the SEC and ESPN all of the cash cow. That's the reason for alternating between conference stations, I believe.

Looks like tickets are slowly starting to sell. Just bought mine and was lucky enough to get in the lower bowl for face value. It definitely looks like there will be a pro-Illini crowd, but Mizzou's side is starting to sell at least past the point of embarrassment.

Illini lower bowl is completely sold out, as are our upper deck seats between the baselines. Our upper deck seats behind the basket are about 50% sold out, with the remaining seats being directly behind the hoop or in the nosebleeds in the corner.

Mizzou's lower bowl is 75% sold out, with the remaining seats being behind the basket. Their upper deck sections are almost entirely unsold behind the basket, but the upper sections between the baselines are almost all gone. I've heard it's easy to scalp for this game, so I am hoping some fans show up on Wednesday and are able to get super cheap tickets and help fill the place up a bit more. Right now, upper bowl tickets are $52.00 from the venue.

EDIT: Kind of a silly question, but do venues bring ticket prices down anymore if it's not sold out? I am on an embarrassingly long streak of using StubHub, and this is the first time I have bought tickets through the venue. Seems silly to keep upper deck tickets that haven't sold at $52 a piece if you might at least sell them for something in the days before the game...

Nah. If it was a bigger game Fox could always put it on Fox or FS1 with national audiences. Similarly ESPN could put it on ESPN1/2. Right now the teams just haven't been compelling enough nationally to warrant that.
