I can't believe they are still standing - they were pretty dumpy then.

I recall a Met. Engineering Professor adjourning his class to Murthy’s in ‘77. Another afternoon the bartender called out “Phone call for any Metallurgist” and half the hands in the place shot up. Murthy’s somehow survived and expanded from its dumpier roots.

Yeah probably! He just turned 25 so he wants to sight-see I guess.

I've seen Legends, Murphy's (still the same place?), Red Lion and Joe's (I think?). Any of those decent? Looking for something in Campustown as I see KAMS is on 1st now?
Legends and Murphy's in particular have more like the college town pubby / dive bar feel. Lively and fun places to hang out and usually pretty crowded on the weekends. They don't have as much pull with the Greek community that tends toward a clubbier vibe. Murphy's is usually full of engineering and grad students

Murphy's was definitely my place as an upper classman in the 90s. I spent more time at Cochrane's before that.

Murphys was grad student/ townie dive in the early 80's. I watched the classic 1964 Dr. Strangelove from the bar.
The kitchen was in the front window and it was only as wide as the original west storefront. From the current draft
taps to the west wall, maybe 16'. The carved out tables and benches are maybe the only thing original.

i loved that place. A small semblance of what it is today but still worth a trip for a burger and fries!

He might find out that 25 is a little old for the campus bars. You age out of that scene reaaaal fast.
I’d only been out for a year or two and was in town for a meeting with some coworkers workers in their late 20’s. I had to take them to Kams of course! We had 1 beer and got a few comments about it being senior citizens night so we hit the road. 🤣

When I first went to Campustown of "(illegal) drinking age," these were the main bars we were aware of:

Legends: This was almost always our "start the night" bar. Great "collegetown" atmoshphere without being clubby. Still love this place!
Murphy's: I had never been here until 2016, and I remember thinking it was cool enough but I'd probably rarely go due to the other options in Campustown ... now it's like one of the few Campustown bars I'd consider!
Red Lion: Ended the night here a few times ... thought it was SO cool the first time I went there, and now you couldn't pay me to go there as a 30-year old. :ROFLMAO:
The White Horse Inn: Never went in this one either, but we walked by it and it looked fun. RIP.
The Clybourne: Never went in this one, usually in favor of Firehaus. RIP.
Kams: Duh, RIP.
Brothers: Loved the balcony setup, RIP.
Firehaus: I remember we went into this one already buzzed, and they had the "third floor" open, as well as stairs down to some beer garden area ... and our drunk 20-year old selves thought it was like the largest college bar of all time. :ROFLMAO: I have watched a few games here, as well, with both family and friends, and it was a great spot. RIP.

There might have been more, but these were the ones I knew of ... 5 out of 8 gone. I would be so annoyed if I were a student at Illinois right now. Went from having one of the better bar scenes in the Big Ten (especially when you included Downtown!) and being the #1 party school when I was first partying there to having like two bars anyone goes to. Sad!

I don't think any current student is upset about the "lack" of bars in Champaign as much as you are

My recollection (late 80s) was that Murphy's carded hard 21 while everyone else was 19 to enter (wink wink only soft drinks). So O'Malley's / R&R / Gully's were my usual haunts. Nowadays it's almost always Murphy's lunch / game / La Bamba dinner.

In my day, we had:
Boni's (our favorite - on 6th. Died our sophomore year). Turned into a mini mall.
White Horse Inn (bucket nights!)
Thunderbird in Urbana (freshman bar - Urbana was 18, Champaign 19)
Kam's - heavy frat presence
Dooley's (later COD's)
Cochranes (across from EE building - quarter Little King's on Wednesdays!)
Illini Inn (mug club)
Red Lion (Changed names several times, was a gay bar for awhile)
Panama Reds (on Green by RR tracks)
Mabel's (bands, on Green street)
Murphy's - grad students
Round Robin - 10 cent hot dogs
DeLuxe Billiards (oh, the fish sandwiches)

Lot's of others that were more restaurants that served beer (Treno's, Coslow's, Zorba's, etc.)

Geez - how'd I ever graduate.

No O'Malley's with the Wall?

Because Murphy's was (is?) 21 to get in unlike the rest of the bars which were 19, it kept its upper classmen/grad student connection in tact. It could be packed but you weren't wading in an inch of beer on the floor like Kam's and CO's. And, the food was good!

Legends was by far my favorite. Did Ride the Rail my senior year. Just the perfect vibe to go get drinks.

Murphys is always good.

Illini Inn drives me crazy. I joined the Mug Club one night, but they never gave me a card. Now I've never been able to join any time I go back because its always packed since it reopened. I miss the old Inn!
