I'd say the numbers point extremely towards "weird anomaly" instead of "worrying repeatable trend".
Oh, I agree. I appreciated your post. I think there's very little chance the game plays out in a similar manner to the December meeting. I highly doubt the Scarlet Knights will get anywhere close to 91 points.

Kofi should win the big man battle but the game will be won on the arc. As long as we don't have an absurd number of fouls again we should be fine, Rutgers lives and dies by the 3 and we've been solid defending it all season. With us firing on all cylinders like this and looking for revenge, plus not playing on their court I think we win by 10.

@Dan I think we have a real problem here. How do we insert the trademark symbol (superscript TM) when we are talking about SpartansPresentedbyRocketMortgages? Wouldn't want anyone to get sued! Please advise at your earliest convenience. Thanks. ;)

First game terrific offensively. 54, 60, and 73 for fg, 3pt, and ft. All about defense without fouling. Ace, Belo, and Grandy much better players at this point. Don’t keep it close.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — As the one-year anniversary of last year’s lost postseason arrives, No. 3 Illinois is preparing for its Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal matchup Friday with Rutgers, which beat Indiana on Thursday, and coach Brad Underwood is not dwelling on the past.
“It’s a new team, a different mindset and it’s too much to think about looking back on something I can’t change,” he said. “We have been playing for a lot all year, we have accomplished a great deal and we have a lot more to go.”

The shift from being the hunter as an underdog, to being the hunted as the No. 3 team in the country, is a matter of perspective, Underwood said.

“There is no doubt that we are a great hunter and we are chasing something. We are chasing a lot right now and there is no doubt that we feel that and we prey on that. I create that I want to channel that the right way,” he said. “It all a matter of what your perspective is. Some people look at it that they are chasing us because we are the higher seed. What we are chasing is something beyond that. Our goals are set pretty high and we will chase those.”

Fun facts:

- That first game against Rutgers was simultaneously Illinois' worst defensive game of the season and Rutgers' best offensive game of the season.
- Illinois was whistled for 26 fouls (most in a game this season, tied with 2nd IU game), and Frazier, Williams and Curbelo all fouled out, the only time any of the 3 have fouled out in a game this season. The fouls led to 36(!) free throws for Rutgers to 15 for Illinois, in a game they won by 3.

i remember our points given up being a point of contention at the time.

I was wondering if you knew PPP numbers and efg% or ts% for that game?

For me, the recurring image from that game was Johnson being tough and crafty enough to bug Kofi on the boards. Even when Kofi had clear position and Johnson couldn't corral the ball, he would tip it or do something else to make what looked like our rebound into a 50-50 ball, which Rutgers invariably won with far superior effort and hustle that day.

GIF REQUEST TIME

Does anyone have that gif of Ayo as grim reaper going door to door to all the B1G teams?

And can someone make a gif of Ayo crossing names of teams to kill off a list, a la Kill Bill or Billy Madison?

Illini Nation thanks you in advance!!

Rutgers offense was 1.27 PPP for the game, however their eFG was just .532 (to Illinois' .611) and TS% was .575. This game was all about foul troubles and rebounding (Rutgers outrebounded Illinois 33-32, with a 36% offensive rebounding edge).

If I mention the fear that we get off to a slow start, will the opposite happen?

I really feel like the Bruce Weber/John Groce slow starts are behind us. There have been a few this year (and a couple with bad outcomes) but this team has a different culture now than they did when they played Mizzou. I've got a feeling that they're going to come out with a lot of energy and try to take Rutgers (and every other opponent) out of their game on both ends of the floor. The great thing about this squad is that they have the athletes, the attitude, and the depth to do it.

I want revenge on the Joisey Pimpernels, including Flops Mulcahey, Ron Harper Jr. (I know, for the 87th time this season his old man was in the NBA), and Geo (what a crappy car that is) Baker.

Tangent on Ron Harper Sr.

He said my favorite quote in sports. A reporter asked him during the record breaking 1997 season if that Bulls team could beat the 1969 76ers who held the record for most wins in a season. He said: “We would kill those guys. They’re in their 70’s.”
