Definitely haven't had many late ones. I think the '09 tourney where we lost to Western Kentucky was a late one IIRC.
It was late as the game was on the west coast, but we played on Thursday that year. With this game being so late on a Friday we are one of the last games to get underway in the entire first round.

It's certainly one of the latest I can ever remember in terms of time and being on Friday. The Chattanooga game in 2022 was on a Friday night, but it was closer to 5-6:00pm.

I’ll absolutely waste some time tomorrow looking all of this up, haha. But put me in the camp this year that loves our timing … if we DID lose at like noon on Thursday, it would ruin the whole First Round for me.

Honestly, can we chill with the constant bashing of Booth? Have we learned nothing from last year? The guy hasn’t even been publicly accused of anything—on or off the court, not even falsely. His biggest “crime” seems to be underperforming severely, being painfully awkward while doing it, and, oh yeah, being someone’s son—something he has zero control over. No doubt, he’s had a rough season. Probably one of our worst scholarship players in recent memory. And yeah, the NIL era definitely isn’t doing him any favors narrative-wise.

But seriously, can we have a little empathy? Was everyone here a star athlete in high school, or does no one remember what it felt like to get picked last in gym class? Now imagine feeling that every single game, on national TV, while getting dragged nonstop on social media. Imagine what that does to your psyche.

Dogging on the coaches all you want. But for crying out loud, Booth is just 19. He’s just a kid trying to figure sh** out—like we all were at that age.

I believe when we lost to Virginia Tech that was the last game of the night.
Lost an incredibly late 6-11 game (though we were 11) to Tulsa on St. Patrick's Night 1995. The preceding game went to triple overtime as 14-seed Old Dominion shocked 3-seed Villanova. So beating Tulsa would have given us a great shot at the Sweet 16. Lou Henson's last NCAA game at Illinois.

We'll probably have to beat Texas and Kentucky to reach the round of 16. I think we're capable of that.

“If a man can’t look out after his son(s) what’s this world coming to?” A quote from Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley, after steering a big insurance contract for the city of Chicago to his to his son.
Another Daleyism:

“Look at our Lord’s disciples. One doubted Him. One denied Him. One betrayed Him. If our Lord couldn’t have perfection, how are you going to have it in city government?"

Beat you to the punch on absolutely wasting time...

I went back and found start times for all games going back to 1997, which is essentially when I couldn't easily find reliable data. See all round 1 start times below (in EST). The last time we got this late of a game on a Friday was in 2011 against UNLV in the first round.

I just read we are the only team in the country to make 15 threes in a game 5 times this season. That's great and all, but 40 threes is too boom or bust and we need to have a more conservative approach in this tournament. You see even the greatest team we've ever had go into a National Championship game and miss 28 threes - shooting 40 in total - and lose (although there were other 'reasons' we lost 🤬🤬🤬)

Boswell 1000% ...

Hamer if you are reading this ... Go watch the Oklahoma game film vs Texas ... Moser figured out how to take him away ... Take notes ...
Your definitely right but I have a feeling we will be playing Xavier. I think Sean knows what know, too...

In hopes of an awesome Friday, wanted to give everyone who will be boing to the games in Milwaukee a heads up.

Reminder that Illini Sections are 118 and 223 for Friday night.

Do not assume that this will be the case for Sunday should the Illini advance. Last year in Omaha (Rounds 1 & 2) and Boston (Sweet 16 & Elite 8) the sections did change between rounds.

I’ll ask my IFund Rep Friday night/Saturday morning for clarification on Sunday’s sections and share here. If anyone finds out before hand, let us know.

Hope to see many of you there!

Go Illini

. Doesn't bode well for his future here or anywhere.
It is difficult, or so it seems based on a million years of history, for a teen to understand one factoid of life. "Quitters never win and winners never quit". So true and a standard of my college coach. Also stuck in my mind from his constant favorite quotes, " When the going gets tough, the tough get going". Both are absolutely true and should be woven into the minds of everyone. Of course, that assumes that we all have the same definition of tough and quitting.... and that varies greatly on this earth.

Amen to that. These are just kids. We have beat this dead horse way too many times.

I agree with you, it seems like it. But, he should also look at his situation as on the other side. He played over 500 minutes, on a top 25-ish P4 team, as a sophomore, and IMO he looks like a much improved player from last year. He isn't in a horrible spot here (knowing that he could be recruited over,) and as a third year player with the same coach, he could be on a Coleman like progression. He probably won't think that way, and he should grab a bag if he can, but I'd like to see him back.
I agree..he seems to have that willingness to do whatever it takes for the team to win

It's tough for these teenagers that thought they were going to be heading to the NBA to come to grips with the fact they aren't good enough to see the floor on a top 25 team. Grit is an acquired skill, a lot of kids will go into a bit of a shell and shut down for a while.

At one point are they not kids anymore? They are over 18 years old and making pretty solid money at this point. Also, they get to play a game for a living.

Now, I don't heap criticism on these guys because it's just basketball and it's just not that big of a deal to me. I'm just curious about when they stop being kids and start being treated closer to adults, given their station in life.

So back to this! The the first NCAA Tournament I can remember is 2001 when I was in third grade, but I went back to 2000 for an even cutoff, haha.

2001 - #1 Seed. Friday at 11:15 am
2002 - #4 Seed. Friday at 2:00 pm
2003 - #4 Seed. Thursday at 12:10 pm
2004 - #5 Seed. Friday at 11:25 am
2005 - #1 Seed. Thursday at 9:40 pm
2006 - #4 Seed. Thursday at 7:35 pm
2007 - #12 Seed. Friday at 6:00 pm
2009 - #5 Seed. Thursday at 9:30 pm
2013 - #7 Seed. Friday at 3:45 pm
2021 - #1 Seed. Friday at 12:15 pm
2022 - #4 Seed. Friday at 5:50 pm
2023 - #9 Seed. Thursday at 3:30 pm
2024 - #3 Seed. Thursday at 2:10 pm
2025 - #6 Seed. Friday at 8:45 pm

So while we have had later start times in that stretch (the latest being 2005 at 9:40 pm), we have never played this late ALSO on the Friday ... it is indeed kind of weird feeling like we are "wrapping up" the First Round, haha.

As another note, at least from my research, it appears the latest NCAA Tournament start time we have had during this stretch using the local time of where the site was was our Sweet Sixteen win vs. Iowa State last year in Boston, which began at 10:10 pm EST. A close runner-up was for our 2004 Sweet Sixteen loss to Duke, which didn't start until 10:00 pm EST. Regarding the latter, I vividly remember being the only one in my family to stay up to watch that (as a sixth grader!) because we were on vacation in Atlantic Time, so it started at 11:00 pm for us. I wrote my dad a note and slipped it under their door explaining that we lost, but we played hard and I was confident we would be really, really good next year. :ROFLMAO:

I think the Booth miseducation is a bit overblown. Yes he hasn’t panned out. But like just about every other p5 team (Sparty excepted), we were never going go more than 7-8 deep. One of Tomi/Morez/Ben/Booth was always going to wind up the 9th or 10th guy and essentially be our Brandon Leib emergency big. Booth’s shortcomings have hurt more due to the injuries/illnesses we’ve suffered in our front court but there aren’t many teams that are going to look good if their 10th man/emergency big has to play a rotational role and that usually doesn’t happen.

Kid has tools. We tried it out. For whatever reason it hasn’t worked out. But I don’t think he was ever going to play in front of Tomi Morez and Ben so was due for a limited role this year regardless.
This year's team could have used another effective big so that Brad could have played Tomi and Res together more.
