Getting ready for another glorious Illinois Football season by replaying the very best college football game of Week 6, 2022. Go Illini

Felt like Illini were in complete control the whole game but still one big play/missed tackle away from losing the game. It had the looks and feel of an old grind it out game in an era of scoring. I will always wonder how many points the Illini would have put up had DeVito not gotten hurt in the 1st Quarter. I think Illini would have won comfortably given how terrible Iowa's offense was combined with the dominant Illini defense.

Yeah, our D looked every bit as good as theirs, but our offense would have been way better with Tommy in. I literally don’t know how I could have recovered if that fumble return for a TD was upheld, lol.

I was there in the horseshoe with my $77 season tickets (in honor of Red Grange), and it was absolutely nuts after the first TD. The only time I have heard the stadium louder was against Michigan in 2000 (I'm also only in my mid-30s, so my Illini football life has been full of a lot of pain).
I was there (also in the horseshoe) as well. IIRC, Vontae Davis almost housed the opening kickoff, then the first play from scrimmage was a TD to Jacob Willis. That is definitely the loudest I've heard the stadium in my lifetime!

There is a Michigan channel on YouTube that has highlights of this game. While the channel obviously has a bias toward Michigan, the highlights are "neutral" and actually show the good and the bad from both sides. When we score our first touchdown, Memorial Stadium is LOUD. There is actually a comment on the video that I remember (paraphrasing here) that said, "I have never heard 57k people be so loud."

I would agree that Memorial has not even gotten close to that since that game ... but it shows that the acoustics of our stadium allow for a VERY loud crowd with only 57k in attendance ... so we better be rockin' vs. PSU!!
2011 ASU game was the loudest I've been to, probably still the loudest game we've had since then.

I think for sure. I think 2008 Iowa and 2016 UNC (which got quiet fairly quick but was very loud in the beginning) the only other options since that game, and 2011 ASU was louder imo. 2022 Iowa may even be next on the list, but yeah none of these are to the 2011 ASU level.

I am torn a little bit......

Illinois will rely on good D, ground the ball and wear the D down whether it is for 1 or 7 yards a gain and tends to keep the playbook more basic to break in the season

Altmyer has a real nice deep ball and think they might try to take some shots starting week 1. Maybe I am overhyped but this might be the most depth at WR I remember having.......
a number of posts have talked about wearing Toledo down. I am wondering how the running clock will affect this. Wear down last year at end of 3rd might = end of game this year (not just in Toledo game). We will win the O and D trenches Sat without having to wait for wearing down which I am sure Toledo has game planned for

Need an opinion… is it better to watch the game from the horseshoe or from upper deck (visitors side)? Buying tix for a group and the obvious good seats seem to be off the board. Thanks in advance

losing to a MAC team should only happen once every 12-15 years .
we are already WAY over the average .

we win Sat .
but not by much more than 10-12 pts

It is personal preference. You can see plays develop more in the horseshoe, but depth perception is way off. I always enjoyed my time in the North End Zone seats as a student, but as I am getting older, I am appreciating my front row seats in section 202 over the 10 yard line of North End Zone.

My thoughts are if you can snag first few rows in upper deck somewhere in the middle of the field, then they are better than horseshoe (at least from a seeing the field perspective. Otherwise, it is all personal opinion on what is better (you will definitely be closer to field in the shoe).

Am I missing something or is the Illinois -9.5 line the easiest money of the weekend?

I expect us to dominate at the point of attack & Toledo apparently has horrible special teams.

Is anyone here going to talk me out of betting the beach house?
Whenever it looks like a sure thing, don’t touch it or take the other side. If i were betting i’d take Toledo plus 9.5.

That game reminded me of 2007 in Iowa City. Both teams always at arms length but never felt good. When ILL scored late, I was elated only to collapse when they called it back on an iffy penalty. Last year I sat in the stands sweating it out and when Art had the ball pop out, I crumbled. I have never had such a mood swing as that play, plus the reversal. About tore my guts out. (I really really really don’t like Iowa). The payback for 2007 was nice 😎

Smart play.

If you could put a price tag on an Illini victory, what would it be worth? A Benjamin? Ok, so take Toledo and the points for that amount. If Illinois covers, then it was an impressive win and worth every penny. If they lose, at least you got paid. And if they win by less than 10, it's less impressive but still a win AND you got paid!

Ah yes, was dubbed as the toast of Champaign….
This was the exact commercial I was trying to find on YouTube that led me to the intro vid that I posted.

I remember everything about that week so distinctly. Probably a side effect of being 18 years old and all of two months into my first excursion with life outside of mom's house.
