Here’s this year’s schedule with our opponent’s rankings according to football outsiders:

Nebraska (42)
UTSA (105)
Virginia (46)
Maryland (69)
Purdue (58)
Charlotte (119)
Wisconsin (6)
Penn St (10)
Rutgers (102)
Minnesota (29)
Iowa (12)
Northwestern (53)

Coming into the Nebraska game, they had us ranked 92.

But let’s say:

1.) Throughout the course of the season, we improve & end the season ranked 30 spots higher than we are now at 62.

2.) Any team ranked +/- 16 spots of us is a toss up and we split those games (I chose 16 because that’s where Virginia lands at the moment).

3.) Any team ranked 16 spots higher we lose and any team ranked 16 spots lower we win.

Wins:

UTSA (105)
Charlotte (119)
Rutgers (102)

Wins: 3 (puts us at 4 on the year).

Toss ups:

Virginia (46)
Maryland (69)
Purdue (58)
Northwestern (53)

Wins: 2 (puts us at 6 on the year)
Losses: 2

Losses:

Wisconsin (6)
Penn St (10)
Minnesota (29)
Iowa: 12

Losses: 4

Final record: 6-6.

After yesterday’s win, if you squint, it looks like we have a real shot to go bowling.
Not convinced Minnesota is an automatic loss.

If this was the opening game for both teams I might be a little worried, but to have a game on film for this coaching staff will be priceless, I think we win by at least 14.

Your to Pessimistic,Nebraska was not a bad team, defense had them confused all day, credit to Defensive Coaches, even with some key players not playing . Offense will only continue to improve,8-4

No one should be surprised if this game is a slugfest. If Illinois covers the spread against UTSA then we can start believing this team is better than advertised. UTSA winning or keeping it really close and the answer could be that Nebraska just stinks.

Looking back on our first game a lot of Nebraska's success came on totally blown coverages (WIDE open receivers or Martinez on his 75 yard scamper for a TD). Offensively I watched a play where a receiver was still staring at the sideline AFTER we hiked the ball. That stuff is going to go away. If both sides of the ball omit a handful of glaring mistakes and the players gain some confidence they're going to be a lot better. Nebraska saw us at our worst and we found a way to win. We just need to keep doing that for five more wins. 6 wins and a bowl should be our goal after a 2-0 start. How's UTSA's run defense?

So what do we think our chances are of being 3-0 going into Maryland? I ask out of selfishness because I’ll be at a home game for the first time since my student days.
Privately in whispered conversations with close friends, I have us at 6-0 (identical to Zook’s final year in 2011)..........

as we head into “Bielema vs Wisconsin” for the Homecoming Game on October 9th.

We should try and recruit Judson HS in converse Texas. Both their future NFL draft pick and 2nd team All American RB, and future NFL draft pick safety are from there.

Judson has good athletes. Believe they won some track stuff and girls championships within the last few years. Tough to beat out houston/Dallas at the state level coming from the central/south region of Texas.

But to be fair, there’s like 15 other schools I think of as having elite football talent and athletes in Texas, and none are in the San Antonio area.

The flip side is that if we faced a competent or, God forbid, good QB, he would've hit open receivers and ripped us.

That isn't to say we're not better on D. Just that things very easily could have been markedly different had we faced a good passer.

UTSA is no joke. The Athletic have them ahead of us in their preseason rankings (75 v 88, FWLIW). Doesn't mean squat, but we can't lay an egg. That said, I think we'll win.
What did they have Nebraska at?

The flip side of that is that our DB play was outstanding. They're WRs couldn't get separation.

There were more than a few bad throws from Martinez and some of them could have resulted in big gains.
He was erratic. But most of our sacks were because of his dancing around in the pocket waiting for a receiver to get open.

Nebraska played horrendously and with the Frost situation, I suspect that will continue.

That's got 3-9 written all over it.

UTSA is likely a better team and it's possible they're a much better team.

I would be more surprised if we blew them out than if we lost.
Give some credit to Illinios Coaches, Defense confused Nebraska all day other than a few breakdowns Defense looked good.UTSA is a run oriented team.I'll be very surprised if Illini doesn't blow them out

I disagree. The edges played contain and they did some nice stunts on the inside to get backers free. Can't wait to see them edges get after a qb that isn't a threat to take off on us.

The Illini have a knack for taking out officials.
