The 89 team lost those 4 games because Gill was injured in the Georgia Tech game and didn't return until the Iowa game in March. 12 games with out him. Even so they won at #3 Indiana with out Gill. Most would agree that team would have been undefeated if not for Gill's injury.I am not arguing with you, but I went back and refreshed my recollection of that year. That 88-89 team was 5-4 on the road in the Big10 and would have had a losing record but for a near miracle at Indiana in the final seconds. The current team is currently undefeated (4-0) on the road in the B1G - that is pretty tough, maybe not in the same way, but tough mentally. I seem to recall that 88-89 team always seeming to have a run, usually in the second half, where they would continue to score but the other team would blink and go cold for a few minutes and Illinois would separate from them. That final four game, Michigan just never blinked for them. They often intimidated other teams, especially with their athleticism. The current team just doesn't often get intimidated - they just keep cool and plug away trying to play good basketball. That is how I would describe the different toughness of these two teams. Mirk and Boz have some edge to their game, but the other guys not as much.
This warrants the full five Eeyores I tell you!I think that his point is that there were a lot of areas that stick out like a sore thumb and we'll get beat 95 times out of 100 if they occur again.
1)Being outscored 44-14 in the paint, 26-4 in the first half. That's not ok. That's being dominated.
2)They shot 56% from the field.
3)Only forcing 3 turnovers to our 10.....leading to 20 points off turnovers to 2.
4)They had 19 assists to our 10
5)We only had 10 assists on 27 made baskets
If Wagler didn't go off, we would have considered our offense stagnant, which is really was. There were a lot of late shot clock, deep threes that went down.
We got 12 offense boards off of long rebounds and dropped 18 threes on their head. That is how we won.
Nebraska did that to us and we called them lucky and said they couldn't do anything like that again.
46 points, by one player, on 13/17 shooting, 9/11 from three is unlikely to be replicated.
I could be wrong with what he was trying to say, but that would be my guess.
Why isn't this on a shirt for Keaton's NIL yet?Man, I thought I argued about some weird stuff. (Wait, I know I do. Carry on.)
New topic. Should I get W46LER as my vanity Iowa license plate?![]()
Good lord this game can’t get here soon enough.
Loyalty got into some catnip in this thread.
It's only a "trap game" if you lose.
That doesn't seem very realistic considering Washington's last several games.If we come to play — W 90 - 68.
If we spent all week comparing ourselves to the greatest Illini teams in history — L 78 - 77.
Sorry for your loss - here’s to a W for your pops!My dad passed away days ago. Lifetime Illini fan. I went to the U of I, which pleased him greatly. My brother and I are doing a graveside visit/prayer tomorrow.
I haven't been to SFC since it was Assembly Hall. But I'm flying in today so I can be there tonight.
Two old UI housemates of mine pulled some strings and--i'm elated about this--got tickets for my brother and me, on the court. Mid-court. Next to the TV announcers.
Suffice it to say, we've never had seats like that.
Here's hoping we win, and Wagler hangs 50 on UW. But even if they don't, and he doesn't, I'm grateful for my friends and for Illini basketball and for something wonderful to look forward to.
Sorry to hear this and deepest condolences. May you and your brother be able to celebrate his life tonight with an Illini victory. My dad passed away days ago. Lifetime Illini fan. I went to the U of I, which pleased him greatly. My brother and I are doing a graveside visit/prayer tomorrow.

How about Ty Rogers?'expects Kylan back mid-Feb' ... good news re: no change in target return and slipping to end-Feb or later
Yell at least 1 shoutout to Loyalty! You'd be the user of the month,,,My dad passed away days ago. Lifetime Illini fan. I went to the U of I, which pleased him greatly. My brother and I are doing a graveside visit/prayer tomorrow.

I loved that '01 team, it was indeed a great one and boy was it fun to watch. I did go back and forth between them and the '21 team. They were so good on the interior and at PG. I think the backcourts were comparable between the teams- a stud with some high end shooters. Frankie vs Ayo seems a wash in different ways. Bradford and Harrington vs Plummer and Grandison also seems a wash. Loved Arch but Kofi was generational, so it'd come down to Cookie, Marcus, Damir, and Lucas vs Trent, Damonte, and freshman Curbelo. Much better interior vs. Much better perimeter? Would be an interesting matchup.I'd put the 2001 team ahead of 2021. That team was shoddy officiating in the elite eight away from going to the final four. And eventual champ Duke wanted no part of Illinois again that year. We lost at Cameron in the ACC challenge by 1 in a game where we had 26 turnovers. We had the physicality that was Duke's kryptonite in that era. Also in the sweet 16 that year we made a real good Kansas team just tap out with about 5 minutes left. They didn't want any more. Loved that team.
2021 was great. Fun group of guys but the turd they laid against Loyola just makes it hard for me to consider them above the 2001 team.
This year is trending in the right direction. I suspect they may enter the "if they don't win it all it's gonna hurt real bad" territory soon. It always sucks when the season ends but there have only been a few seasons where it really hurt bad when it ended cause there was a solid shot to take it home. I'd put the 4 listed above on that list along with 1984 (Kentucky screwjob), 2002 (preseason #1 in SI), 2004 & 2024 in that category also.
You forgot about the captain of the '01 team, Mr. Do-It-All, our second ever triple double man, maybe one of the toughest Illini, Sergio McLain.I loved that '01 team, it was indeed a great one and boy was it fun to watch. And speaking of this matchup, man would this be fun to play in the 2001 era and watch Lucas and Damonte go at it. There'd be at least 1 brawl a game, maybe 2. Ah great times.
Agreed. After losing Bam for the road guantlet, I think most of us would have said getting one is a very positive result. Of course, now I am completely Veruca Salt.House money
