A more realistic extrapolation is that to shoot his average of 27%, he would need to go 21 for his next 100 attempts... or 21%, and that is much more realistic. Long story short, while he is definitely playing better right now, I'll hold off until season's end before announcing that we have seen the new Abrams.

I think a lot of Tracy's current percentage has to do with shot selection. I expect that alone will help his 3 point percentage.

Winthorpe is no Duke ( Mortimer or Randolph ) and I wouldn't trade places with them for a dollar or even all the orange juice in Florida.

We should beat them by 80,000 shares.

Agreed. We are looking good Billy Ray. I think Coleman will come up big for us and serve up some treys.

Or maybe it's this: Jeremy Werner ‏@JWernerScout 10h10 hours ago

Tate leads #illini this season in plus/minus at +99 Malcolm Hill second at +85 Finke third at +80

Or that he's got 23 assists to 8 to's. Or that he scraps and hustles every minute he's out there.

I don't know what the kid has to do for some people to get off his case and just enjoy his play. Te'jun will get his shot, in the meantime listen to Groce. He's not playing him out of pity.

#illini Groce: Right now, (Tate) is in such a groove. Playing best basketball of his career.

Not that it will stop the Tate detractors.

Aside from last year with the finger issue, I feel like Tate has always flashed in the non con. We'll see how it goes when bigger, longer, better scouting big ten teams come in and play 10 feet off of him. But right now let's give him the credit he deserves.

+1

Agreed, Tate's effectiveness declines markedly when we get to conference play. Hopefully, that'll change this season.

Finally, we should probably all be thankful Tate is holding it down. It gives tjl more time to adapt and get better on D. Anybody remember what happened last year when we had to play freshmen who weren't ready?

Unquestionably. I trust Groce to get the PG minutes right. In the long run, TJL will benefit greatly from having Abrams and Tate as teammates and competition.

It's always fascinating to watch people harp on what a player is not, rather than appreciating what a player is.

Jaylon is the same player he's been since his freshman year, only more so. We can count on him to run the offense, make smart decisions with the ball, and knock down free throws.

What we can't count on him to do is hit any sort of jump shot.

And that's OK. JG knows what he has in Jaylon. And with Tracy's improved shooting, along with at least three other players getting major minutes who who we CAN count on to hit jumpers (Hill, Finke, Coleman-Lands, and even Morgan), JG believes that he can afford to have Jaylon run the offense and occasionally drive to the hoop when the opposing team falls asleep.

So deal with it.

I had wondered if the above was true. I see it posted regularly. Yet, Combes claims in post #34 in this thread:

Actually, the last two years, his stats have been almost the same in and out of conference. His sophomore year, he actually averaged a half a point more in conference while leading the BT in FT%. His turnover rate has been the same, too. Very low.

Need an episode of Myth Busters to investigate this one.

Yeah, that's pretty much the problem.

Not really OK.

Why is it suddenly going to work now? You know the saying about the definition of insanity, right?

So deal with it.

We have been. At least the defense should be improved this year, I hope.

4 on 5 offensively, doesn't show so much in individual stats. But it sure shows in results. This coming from someone who values what Tate brings.

IMO, it's not that JT personal stats change, it is the effect he has on the rest of the team.

It is the efficiency of all other players that is impacted by Tate not being guarded. It is difficult to measure in stats, but pretty obvious by the eye test.

edit: posting same time as Joel

Groce previews Winthrop

https://twitter.com/DPiperScout

Groce: I thought we did some decent things against Detroit. Defensively, still getting better. Continue to fine-tune today.

Groce: Want to continue to throw it inside. Think our guys need to post harder. Offensively rebounding needs to be better.

Groce: Winthrop is going to be a challenge. Very good offensively. Very impressed by PG Keon Johnson. Shifty, quick, scores it.

Groce: Xavier Cooks is long (6'8) can handle it, rebound, break down defenses. Have shooters on the wing. Athletic five too.

Groce: Worried about Winthrop's 4 & 5s being able to drive the ball from their position. Test for frontcourt.

Groce: Blessed with depth right now. Want to continue to utilize that. Need all hands on deck right now.

Haha

My prediction for Winthorpe. :

" Think big, think positive, never show any sign of weakness. Always go for the throat. Buy low, sell high. Fear? That's the other guy's problem. Nothing you have ever experienced will prepare you for the absolute carnage you are about to witness. "

And by the way , CAHALL15 Coleman is no Butler. Even Butler is no Butler. Not since their head coach traded places with the Celtics.

As for Jaylon he is our very own Jason Kidd. Enjoy him for what he gets right!

I expect a relatively close game, but one that we kind of lead the entire way. As long as people stay out of foul trouble, defend well at all 5 positions , and make shots, and rebound I think we will pull away towards the end.

Illinois-84
Winthrop-75

And then hopefully 5-0 heading to Brooklyn!

Guessing our 90 ppg average now starts to come back to earth.

Think I'll go with 71-63 good guys. Malcolm is the man....19 pts. Thorne's minutes continue to grow as long as he can stop his man on D. Give me TJL and 14 minutes (4 assists; 1 TO).

Unfortunately, I have to teach a class at the same time as this game. Does anyone know of a later viewing option?

Typically ESPN3 games are available archived immediately after game ends.

Next 3-5 games definitely tell us a lot about where we are now. But OTOH a lot of our core guys haven't played much together yet (Black, Thorne, Abrams, TJL), so even if we have some rough patches in the next 3-5, not sure super strongly indicates our long term prospects. Over the next three, I do think we have to win at least 2. Losing to Winthrop at home would be bad. And if we lose to WV (we'll be serious dogs, they just destroyed NH 100-41), we can't lose to Temple, which lost to NH. After that, NC State at home and VCU neutral will both be tough.

If we come out of the next 5 games 3-2 or better, I'll be pleased.
