Haven't the NBA refs been national news all year for their poor performance? Nobody has confidence in them either. Bottom line is you can't expect refs to be perfect for you to win. They could've easily called a flagrant on us at the end when we swiped at the ball and hit that dude's face, but they didn't. Only difference is Purdue wasn't begging for it because they put themselves in a position to win.
They call out the refs in the NBA and say they missed calls that led to wins or losses. That's reason to be better and improve at your job. And you're just making the point that these refs have been horrible all year. Missed calls will happen... but these are obvious and flat out ridiculous.

Did you watch that first half? We played great for 20 minutes. The first 20 was our worst effort since Missouri. This focus on the last two minutes needs the be erased. We created a situation that we literally needed a miracle. Then, when a miracle doesn't happen we're going to focus on individual guys? This TEAM got down 24, this TEAM erased 24....then fell short. After what I saw in the first half, I'm damn proud of our guys for not mailing it in.
Proud also, but TEAM digs out of the hole in the second half and back to hero ball at the end ruins it when we had a chance. I would feel much better with Mayer, Shannon, Hawkins, Goode, or Melendez getting a good look at the end (you know, drive and dish for instance) than the garbage shots we forced at the end. Sorry, call a spade a spade, and hopefully we learn from it. Jmo.

My gut feeling is that if he doesn't go off in the BTT and the Dance, he'll come back next year for his final season. I don't think he improved his draft stock to the point he wanted this year.
He's potentially the POY! How much better can it get?

That definitely sounds like the correct gameplan in that situation. Fairly certain most of us in the game thread had that type of play drawn up as well- either him or TSJ. Aggravating stuff. I'll say again, just because you can make a stepback three, doesn't mean you should be taking it, especially when you've gotten very high percentage looks going to the basket. Not sure what you can do if you're Brad other than putting him on the bench, but that's shooting yourself in the foot more than a bit as well.
Yes Live and Die with a guy who wants to be the hero and in his mind the step back 3 is a cool shot to knock down. If it does not go, oh well at least I had a chance to be the hero. I think I called 3 of Mayer's 3 point shot in the second half. His MO is to take ill advised shots in crucial situations. Frustrating

I'm still highly annoyed at the sequence where Morton just grabbed TSJ's dribbling hand down 2......announcers are like "good hands" LOL
Then they see the obvious foul on the replay and are just liek "oh mightve been some contact....." IDK why that annoyed the S*** out of me more than the foul itself SMH

This game is another prime exhibit of this team's MO all year. The lack of mental preparation to start and finish games is really frustrating. The difference in effort level between first and second halves is unacceptable, and has been the source of most losses. Great fight, but it shouldn't have to always come down to that. They are good, but not good enough to overcome the mind-numbing play during stretches in the first half. Just 30 minutes of play like they exhibited in the second half makes all of the poor calls and lack of end of game execution moot. And I would argue it makes the execution part easier because you have not just expended all your energy cutting a 20 point lead to get back in the freakin game. Frustrating, but entertaining at least I guess 🤷‍♂️
First half turnovers killed us😡

I hope to see the the following as a our starting lineup:
Harris
Shannon
Rodgers
Mayer
Hawkins

This group consistently brings the best energy and effort.

-Dain has not been very good lately and team has played better without him out there.
-Epps should not start coming off a serious injury.
-RJ is playing well, but I think Rodgers gives
us just a little more.
Wt* I would roll the dice and play Goode and go without a true PG. I don’t see a BIG or an NCAA trophy starting from 8 or 9 seed so we may as well go out inflicting max pain on our opponents.

I’ve been asking for this since we inserted him into the starting lineup lol, pls Brad.
It's funny if this happened we could end the season where it started. Coleman at the 5 and the ability to switch every position if we wanted to. Might help prevent the easy 2 point shots we give up with dain in drop coverage

Another game , another Jekyll and Hype performance by the beloved........We are not as bad as the first half looked and we CAN be as good as the second half if we only would learn how to play a full 40 minutes with our hair on fire........
We play placid sometimes and we play frenetic some times , meaning , to me , we are a dangerous team , for sure.........
I bet whoever gets us in the tourney will not know how to prepare the scouting report unless you just plan for anything is possible from the Illini.......

This was one of the better reffed games we have been involved in .....The classic goofs to me was the no call of a flagrant call on edey............One of the most obvious flagrants I have ever seen ......can't believe no hint of a review.....nada......the second goof was the no call on TSJ's drive late in the game .....another obvious foul , no call ........
I still maintain the block by Rodgers on newman as he was falling out of bounds should have been a no call................Ty can scale higher heights than some small airplanes.............

TSJ got his pocket picked too many times to have him as the primary ballhandler......period....Ty can handle that responsibility just fine if you ask me.....

cohawk had a very good game ......not great , but better than average and played PG on O and the 5 on D......mighty impressive .....I hope cohawk comes back next year .......could elevate his ranking with another year in college and be the main dude with MM & TSJ gone.......

down a bunch in the first half to tie game late in the second half......Wonder a what if ........What if MM makes both FT's and gives us our first lead......what if .......what if ........what if.........seems like I have thought that b4 with this team...........

Time for more meds and a lay down with my NL# 3 and watch some other B$G classic games this afternoon........

See you all in the funny papers ......................

This may be an unfavorable viewpoint, but I think TSJ really needed to sell it more to get the call. That's not the easiest call for a ref to make, but if TSJ screamed, hit the deck holding his hand, I think he gets the call. While I think refs have called TSJ and Kofi fouls differently than most of the league, I also think they fight through it too much instead of screaming and holding the point of the foul and that's why they aren't getting calls they should. It's why Mayer gets so many calls. Sometimes the soccer theatrics work for refs who can't keep up with the speed of the game.

I think our best lineup requires Coleman at the 5, Mayer and TSJ. IMO the remaining two spots should be any two of Epps, Rodgers, RJ and Harris. Also comfortable throwing Goode in that group after today.

Last game I thought RJ was a must in the lineup, but I think today showed how much we can use Epps at times. Typically I’ve felt that having Coleman, Mayer and TSJ out there gives us enough ball-handling that Epps isn’t a necessity and we can instead have a wing like RJ or Rodgers, but today’s ball-handling from TSJ was concerning. Regardless, we have a lot of good options. I just don’t think Dain is in our best lineup.

I have to give some big time props to RJ and Goode today! RJ made some huge rebounds and had another good impact on a game until foul trouble in a matter of minutes. Heck, seconds. Good is getting back in the flow which will be huge moving forward. I can just imagine where this team would've been if he had played all season. Ty is steadily progressing also and I can't wait until he becomes a competent shooter. Their hustle today was awesome and much needed. Sincere is a beast defensively and he played outstanding. I'm excited to see this team as a whole entity. Hopefully we can get healthy as a team and get some cohesiveness. I think if RJ hasn't gotten in foul trouble we would've gained the lead as we were on our way to with his help. Things turned after he went out.

It was always a good plan tactically, the switching just led to a lack of effort/intensity/accountability. I think now that this team has built chemistry and grown together, a “flying Illini” style lineup with coleman at center is the answer.

Ok, we have their number, we just showed everyone how to beat PU. If I am an Illini player or coach, I would want another shot at them so badly. Put us in their bracket, please.
I don’t think PU wants to see us again.
I don't think PU is afraid of playing Illinois again. In fact, if the Illini see them again, PU probably will win because we cannot count on this Illinois team. Proof? This whole season.

Can't fault this team's effort. We played really hard that 2nd half and made a phenomenal run at it. Really just lacking execution in a few key areas doing us in. First and foremost, we need to do something to change how we come out in games. Our first 4-8 minutes have been consistently abysmal for the past month. Not sure how Underwood gets the 2nd half effort to show up from the get go aside for maybe chewing the team out right before the game, lol, but something needs to change there. We also need to stop shooting the hero ball threes- even if you can make that shot, it doesn't mean you should take that shot, and especially not when you've been getting really high quality looks to get you back in the game.

Special shoutout to Sencire Harris- he was an absolute beast tonight. By far the best player on the court for us and singlehandedly kept us from being down 30 or maybe even 40 at halftime. He was great tonight. Ty was really good as well, and Luke and RJ added a lot today. I loved our 2nd half effort. Loved it. But really difficult to play 16 minutes of bad basketball in the first half and expect to come back. That said, we were there, and then those bad decisions and poor hero ball came back to finish us off. Just who we are at this point unfortunately.

Hoping we can put a few solid games together in the BTT, but gotta show up from the tip. It's nice to know you can come back from 20pt deficits, but you don't want to try doing it in one and done tourneys.
Gotta disagree with you about who our best player was today. Harris was a beast but the turn around really started when Hawkins moved to PG on offense and C on defense. Six assists and only one turnover. And he handled Edey ( with help, I know ) about as well as anyone has all season. Geez Eddy is giant! I couldn't believe how small Danja looked next to him.

If you are a big man and cant play on the perimeter the NBA game has passed you by. Edey needs to be able to shoot like Luka Garza, then he will get looks.
He's a big man who can shoot free throws. That's big too. He has nice touch and defense. He can make that midrange too. He's capable of more than the coaches allow him to show in college, just as Kofi was!

Also early in the season it was vulnerable because they would just exploit skyy on defense. I agree I like the effort of fighting over screens because we have length to compensate.

There is no doubt the speed of the game is too quick for a lot of the refs.

Edey would get absolutely manhandled in NBA pick and roll coverage. He’s no better than Tacko Fall. Nice guy to have at the end of your bench but he’s not going to play.
