Purdue 77, Illinois 71 Postgame

Marcus held on to the ball looking for his shot way to long in the second half.
He continued to drain the shot clock down to nothing before conceding he was not going to get a shot off and was forced to pass.
There's no way you watched the same ending as me and chose Domask's performance to complain about out of everything in the game...

As I was walking out of building I commented on how tentative they looked offensively in the second half, seemed like they passed up shots that they normally would have taken. I was also really frustrated a couple times where they got Edey to switch onto a perimeter player and they kept playing hot potato giving it to the guy who he was guarding. That's the perfect time to let TSJ attack the rim with Edey not in the paint.

Purdue was clearly working really hard to take away Coleman and TSJ, they were playing both very tight on the perimeter. Coleman after he got the ball they gave him no space to shoot, TSJ they spent a lot of time basically hugging him off the ball to keep him out of the play.

This game wasn’t even fun to watch in the second half- just no flow at all. TSJ was not himself, Goode wouldn’t take wide open threes - we’re doubling Edey for some reason when what we were doing was working

Just a frustrating game to watch when it should have been an enjoyable college basketball game. The refs don’t make it easy when they don’t call a foul on Edey when he didn’t even touch the ball on the block on Hawkins that sent him to the floor. Really hard to watch

The most puzzling decision in the second half for me was pulling Amani after his 4th foul.
Like, at that point, just use that last one - it's not like Edey was lighting it up from the ft line. 🤷‍♂️
Also, I did not stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

I think they should have pulled him after the 3rd. What's the plan there? To actually foul? That makes no sense to me at that stage of the game. Amani couldn't play without fouling so might as well get Dain in there because he can score

I've been watching ball a long time. Love watching games like this where both sides are at such a high level and want it badly. Am still struck after all these years by how it all comes down to less than a handful of plays at the margin. We didn't make them tonight. They did.

On to Iowa, fighting for its March life. I hope the boys bring it hard and take care of the handful. :illinois:

when we switched sides I just knew that rim would be a problem. Damn missed opportunity. Hope they bring a fire at Iowa now, can’t afford to lose that one.

Thing I will be interested going forward is how is Edey’s back. This is the first game where we were more physical with him.

I think his back will be sore and we ran him and got him frustrated. The problem was their guards. He could easily be sore for a couple days but next few games will tell

Got more aggressive as the half went on but yes early did hold the ball too much.

Also didn't get Shannon enough touches in the halfcourt imo. Seemed like he may have injured himself but he just played kind of tentative.

At the end of the day we know what this team is. Some left to be desired on D? Yes. Carelessness with the ball at times? Yes. But, on the flip side, is this offense capable of outscoring anyone they play? Absolutely. Are our veterans able to make big plays down the stretch to win us games? Definitely.

I am super excited for this team going into the postseason. More so than the past few years for multiple reasons. For one, we aren’t going to have to search for points. I’d much rather be a few defensive stops away from a win than a few empty possessions of trying to find offense to hold a lead/come from behind. For two, we aren’t nearly as scoutable as a lot of teams (including Purdue) due to our plethora of scoring options. Wouldn’t bet for the rest of the year that our big three only combine for 44 points.

Does Purdue have our number this year? Sure. They have the reigning NPOTY who gets treated like a piece of fine China dinnerware. Congrats to them on a great season. Some of which I feel was gifted. Regardless, let’s do some damage in the tourney and see where this offense can take us. Get hot and win a few games and anything can happen from there. I refuse to believe we have reached our ceiling.

This is a huge signal to me that this team won't make the second weekend. Total collapse the last 4 minutes which we've seen numerous times this year. Inability to close out games.

They didn’t collapse. Like elite teams do, Purdue made winning plays and turned some good bounces and a contested NBA 3 into a very close win.

Ok, not sure if it's just me, but I am really starting to notice a pattern and getting pi**ed off at these post game interviews with Brad sometimes. It seems he wants to bang his finger on the table or get upset and tell them to post a headline in the paper about something he thinks his players need to do. Yet He sits there with a smile and will talk about any adjustments made or not made and laugh and blow em off like it's no big deal. There is no reason nor excuse to have AH in for 4 minutes committing four fouls....there was no reason to change what was working in the first half.....his comment was something like......well we knew we needed to do something different on Zach for the 2nd half, WHY???, did you not like being ahead by 6 at the half? I understand he is the coach and knows more about basketball then 99% of us but you know what I want...just one time....sit down at the interview and curse yourself and your staff PERIOD. Tell the media you and your staff failed to make the proper halftime adjustments!!! These young men fought there butts off tonight but I feel they played one half with an arm tied behind their back cause of the positions they were put in. JMHO Love this team....love our coach.... just so disappointed right now.

Edit: also wanted to add...he preaches accountability all the time....well sometimes it needs to be a look in the mirror.

Frustrated for them. Frustrated as a fan. We just can’t get over the hump. Goodish effort. Fell short I’m the crunch by reverting to bad habits.

Don’t get the defensive switch to start the second half. In our own heads.
After some thought, and talk, and more thought, I still can’t shake it. We have them, We had the game under control and we changed. The shift started at the beginning of second half. It didn’t break our back but it gave them hope and an angle. It was a very slow slide tilt of the floor.

A lot of fight in the Illini tonight. Great game by Domask. Unfortunately, Eddy was a beast and the threes at the end were daggers.

My thoughts on the game:
1) Harmon was straight up bad. He missed the wide open three at the end but I was more pissed that he didn't take a gimme floater in the first half, instead choosing to dump off a tough pass to Dainja which resulted in a turnover.

2) I've been as vocal as anyone about Krush being a sub-par student section in terms of bringing a true home court advantage. Overall, they have a ways to go, but kudos to them tonight. They brought it. I was impressed throughout the game.

3) Hat tip to Purdue on an outright title. We choked a couple of games away. Hope we get them in the BTT and can get a banner for our seniors.
