Purdue 77, Illinois 71 Postgame

This version of Quincy & Ty need to show up from here on out
For sure. Quincy looked the best he has in months and seemed much closer to his earlier season self. When he is rebounding, cutting to the rim, and making shots, he's so important to what we do.

As for Ty, I thought he was fantastic tonight. So much for all the talk pregame that he'd be completely unplayable in this game. His defensive intensity in the 1st half was a big part of why Purdue was struggling unless they were able to get the entry to Edey. The possessions he was guarding Smith especially were absolutely stifling. Completely bottled him up in those possessions. His rebounding effort staved off Purdue, his offball cutting was great, his movement in general, along with Guerrier, Hawkins, and Domask forced Edey to be the most out of position defensively I've seen him this year. Constantly forced Edey to move out or literally with their spacing. Ty was really good tonight. And after being in a bit of a slump to come out like this against a team who most people thought he would get completely destroyed out there was something special.

Beating a 1 seed is incredibly tough, but if Quincy and Ty can play like this in the tourney, I really do think we could make a run. I do wish Brad would be willing to play them in crunch time just once to see them do it and close it out. Because we're a better team with them on the floor and sometimes you just need to see them do it to have confidence they will do it.

I think they should have pulled him after the 3rd. What's the plan there? To actually foul? That makes no sense to me at that stage of the game. Amani couldn't play without fouling so might as well get Dain in there because he can score
I feel ya…and I don’t disagree.

But I gotta be honest. There’s a part of me that’s just happy he’s trusting/using his bench more, period.

( IMO its a far cry better than the 6 maybe 7 man rotation we had there for a while…yes, even after Shannon came back.)
That’s a good thing. It’s March.
I saw a willingness in realtime to make adjustments. And that IS a good thing.

I do like the multi-unit attack thing…with the separate units…i.e. bringing Dain in as early as he did. I’ll definitely give Brad credit for that.

I don’t get the Ty-thing again. I’m guessing Goode played as much as he did because he had a good night against Purdue last time…and he’s a shooter.

I don’t get the Hansberry over Dain-thing either…as dumb as it sounds. Is Hansberry out there over Dain partially because he’s a parameter threat? I dunno?

Everybody seemed to have a different version of “what killed us”. Whether it was
Harmon’s missed 3 or Marcus’s missed dunk. (It almost looked like he surprised himself and jumped higher than he thought. lol) I think that was just one of many attempts simply altered by the lurking spectre of Lerch. Shannon had several. He was not alone.

Upon a second viewing, I can honestly say my crotchety version of “what killed us”
was trying to tip the ball instead of just grabbing the darn thing. (I know of at least 4-5 of those.) Had we corralled it who knows? Lol…That, and the nasty mid-game scoring drought we had. ( Yes, Purdue had a bad one as well.)

PS: On that block…it was Harmon and Coleman both. Harmon might of got a hand on it a split second sooner with his flying windmill of a swat…but it was darn sure Coleman who finished it a split second apart. Watch it again. We both get to be right I guess.

There are a couple that I agree on the pass needs to be better ...

I need to rewatch the film tonight but I can think of a couple off of the top of my head when he just needs to pull the freaking trigger ... And it's not just tonight either ... He's been a little timid lately ...

And like Brad tells him all the time ... Just pull the trigger son ... Do what you do ... I am only gonna take you out if you don't pull it ...
Totally agree. He’s thinking too much out on the court. Shoot, and often.

So many times in the season, we just kind of go stagnant for large stretches. I'm sure coaches are working on it but the fix cant come soon enough

We need to go on a heater. We are 0-4 against the current top 25. We can’t get over on quality opponents. If we are a 4/5 seed top 25 competition will begin in the round of 32, barring upsets. Not liking this trend for a March run. Last time we made it to the 2nd weekend my daughter wasn’t born yet. She graduates high school in May. Let that sink in.

Even though we played well for the most part and obviously Purdue is a great team and national title contender, the thing that hits the me the hardest is that we have now played four games against true Final Four contenders and we have lost them all.

Two on the road, but two at home. All of them were close in the end but the other team always made the plays in the clutch and we didn't.

The silver lining is clearly we have the talent especially on offense to play with anyone, so there is not anyone we should feel we have no chance against. But we have not been able to overcome the best of the best this year and that's what makes this one hurt so much. Somehow even with last year's circus we had wins against elite teams, but we just have not gotten it done for whatever reason this year.

Hopefully somehow we can make the plays and stops necessary in the tourney to make it a memorable run.

Anyone know what the students were yelling at Gillis when he went to the line? Sounded like a custom made chant made just for him.

Hopefully we get another shot next Sunday
May just be me coping but I like the Illini's chances in a third meeting and I I think the Illini are built better to make a run in March if they stay healthy and play with the same amount of defensive effort they did today.

Hopefully, Shannon is healthy because he just looked timid at times offensively but the Illini just took the #2 ranked team down to the wire in a game where Shannon was basically invisible, they shot 25% from 3, and their role players(QG, Harmon, Goode) did nothing in the 2nd half and Purdue shot 56% from 3(80% in the 2nd half).

If they see Purdue again would like to see Shannon attack more aggressively in the halfcourt(give him the ball on the left wing) and to avoid doubling and giving up easy 3s. Ratchet up the perimeter pressure to make entry passes difficult and maybe rotate through DGL and Nico for a few minutes just to keep guys fresh with the sole purpose of them being to hound Smith for 94 feet(literally just steal 2-3 minutes each half with each of them telling them to make Smiths life hell).

Guys, complain all you want about the decision to double Edey out of halftime, but we were winning by 2 with 3:25 and then:

Loyer made a 3
Harmon missed an open 3
Loyer made a jumper
Shannon missed a layup
Smith missed a jumper, but they got the board, Loyer was fouled and made 2 FT

That’s a 7-0 run in 2 mins. Ball game.

Purdue made plays at the end. Illinois’ veteran players didn’t.

OB positive said:
Another pivotal play in the second half was Hawkins dunk attempt were Edey got all wrist. Should have been a foul and a T. I've seen plays this year where the guy got all ball and still got called for a foul, just ridiculous. I believe that changed the momentum of the game.

Edey got some rim, too. Should’ve been goal tending.
That’s a keen observation. It’s totally true. I wasn’t even thinking of that in the moment.

If we aren’t going to be a great defensive team, we just can’t have an off night shooting against a good team. I think it’s that simple.

When QG is on his game, I don’t think anyone can beat us. He has got to start playing up to his potential for us to go far. We are good without him, but with him we might be the best team in the country. We had him for a half tonight.

Bingo. QG has the keys. No one has what he can bring.

OK, after some time and reflection

1) We did play defense tonight, so it is still possible
2) They are a #1 seed and played like it
3) They have Edey, and no one else does

4) We played a real game and did not get home calls, but we didn't get screwed either
5) We are ok and I see us playing in the sweet 16, hard to guard Domask, Shannon, and Hawkins
Purdue is DAMN good. Edey is damn hard to handle - forces you to pick your poison.

We played well. Arrow is pointing up.

Fact: Purdue is a better team than the Illini. Illinois strategy was to stop Smith and Loyer which they did in the first half. Illini 40-Edey 18. But the 2nd half Smith and Loyer lit it up from 3 with the Boilers going 8 of 10 from 3. Illini couldn't find the 3 in the 2nd half. TJS had a poor game, Hawkins played well in the first but seemed to disappear in the 2nd. It was Marcus who kept us in the game once again. We had no answer for Edey has many teams this year didn't.
Looking forward first to Purdue. They have beaten every ranked team to this point but Illinois proved if you can slow Smith and Loyer you can beat Purdue. I think the Boilers will fall in the NCAA once again.
