Purdue 91, Illinois 68 POSTGAME

Dockich just asked a question during the scUM vs Wisc game. Rutgers is the worst team in the B!G. Which team is the second worse? He nominated OSU and Illinois....ouch.

I like to think we are better than somebody beyond Rutgers.
OSU, PSU, Neb, Iowa maybe but it is a scary question

Groce with 12 losses of 20+ pts in 4.5 years.

I had to check the rest of our recent history after looking at the 80's for this metric:

1980's - 5
1990's - 8
2000's - 4
2010's pre-Groce - 1 (the Nebraska game in Weber's last year)

So if you're scoring at home it's:

18 20+ point losses for the program in the 33 seasons prior to Groce
12 20+ point losses for the program in the 4.5 seasons with Groce

That's...not good.

I honestly wish I could stop caring about Illinois Basketball. But I can't. So every game is like another dagger through my heart.

Is there a single facet of this game where we outplayed Purdue? I honestly can't identify one. We were beat across the board. Soundly. At everything.

There is virtually nothing of value to take from this game. Don't even bother watching the film. Throw it away and try to move on.

I don't usually listen to the post game interviews that are posted here (sorry Dan!) but is anybody else concerned that Groce just doesn't know the intricacies of the game? I watched this interview and he never spoke in depth about what the game plan was or how they had planned on attacking or defending Purdue.

Maybe Bollant can take over both programs. The women are 3-2 in the B1G even after the transfer disasters and their best player being out hurt, with a roster of 1 senior, 1 junior, 3 sophs and 7 freshmen. Someone had predicted 0 B1G wins for them this year.

This is how I feel, the first part mainly. I watched the first half with little to no emotion. Then decided cleaning my room was a better option than the watching the second half. I try to give up on the team, but I can't. And I blame it on the fact my 13th birthday was the day of the Elite 8 Arizona comeback game.

You don't even need to look past the shooting percentages to see how bad this game was.

FG-3Pt-FT - Illinois, 40-17-50; Purdue, 60-46-90.

I'm not sure why Tracy is in there anymore.

He can't hit any shot rn but it's between him or tate rn. Obviously Lucas should be starting...

I honestly cant recall a team with this many seniors failing to consistently compete like this .

If no one told you the classes and you just watched this team play you would think we had the youngest team in the league

I turned on the radio to find us losing by 20 in the first half. Immediately turned off the radio and tried to focus on happy thoughts......there weren't any.

We just lost by over 20 and no one is surprised. That's the state of Illinois basketball.

A few things have me concerned:
1. Groce said that he thought the team played with energy tonight. I have no doubt that tried to play and didn't give up until the end but I don't agree with the energy part. If the team had come out with energy, they wouldn't have fallen behind early. They had 1 lead the entire game and that was 2-0. This has been a recurring theme. If they don't jump on the opponent and the opponent jumps on them, they're usually losing that game. There was no energy on the defensive side(open 3's, going inside at will, losing their men).
2. I cannot pinpoint an identity for this team. Is it defense? No. Is it run'n'gun? No. Is it a 3 pt. team? Maybe at times but not consistently enough. As we all know, you can live by the 3 and die by the 3.
3. The rotation still is not set and we are well into the conference season. I think Groce has tightened things up a bit more now as we see Finke/Te'Jon/Kipper as the main guys off the bench with Tate and Thorne playing when there is foul trouble or certain matchups in Thorne's case. I am wondering how Kipper surpassed DJW. Kipper brings energy and those intangibles but why the sudden drop-off for DJW who at times, brought some of those same intangibles although not as much as Kipper is?
4. Who is leading the team? We thought it was TA(vocally) and Malcolm(quietly) but there is something clearly missing here. Leadership has been missing for years now but even with TA back on the court, there is something off. How did it happen to occur that Te'Jon all of a sudden can run a team better than Tracy? I remember the old Tracy and although he wasn't the best pure PG, he always had command of the offense, so what happened, even compared to the beginning of the season? Has he lost confidence? Has he hit a wall(I doubt it but it is a valid question)? Or is it coaching-related?

Abrams at the 2 needs to stop, but Groce is making his own bed at this point.

Love the attitude and effort from TA through the years but he really never was a BIG quality guard. I think that's why we were all so hungry to see more of TJL whether he was ready or not.

This roster is experienced but not as talented as many people on here say. That said, experience should keep you from getting blown out so often.

Malcolm was pretty honest in his post-game interview. He probably realized it before but I think he gets that he's in the last 1/2 of his senior year of his college career and he doesn't want to go out never having made an NCAA tournament. He said he would be more vocal and "express" himself more.

I get where Malcolm is coming from, being shy and not the first one to speak up. That was me and still is me to a lesser extent but I'm glad he recognizes that he needs to speak up. It can be very difficult for someone who isn't used to doing that to all of a sudden start doing it but if his words don't resonate with the rest of the team, then there's no helping this team. If you can't follow Malcolm's example, then a lot of the players may not be mentally strong enough to handle it. The only guys I trust right now are Hill, Morgan, and TA even though he's in a slump because he's the only one on this team who's ever made a tournament. He knows what it takes to get there.

In the bigger picture, when was the last time you had zero B1G teams in the top 15 in mid-January? Against some B1G teams, Purdue looks super strong. But like the rest of the conference, Purdue is inconsistent and playing the rest of their games in a weak conference won't get them (or Wisconsin) sufficiently ready for the teams they will face in March. Look at the non-conference results for the B1G...I believe the record was 4-25 versus ranked teams...and the teams that were beat are no longer ranked. So when you take into account how down the conference is overall, these 20+-pt losses in conference play don't even scratch the surface of where the program is right now.

I turned it off at 15-5. It seems that I enjoyed my evening more than those of you that stuck with the game. I'm not sure whether they lack heart or are so overmatched that it does not matter. Either way, it's painful to watch.

Tracy now averaging 24 minutes, 6.3 ppg, and 1 ast in nine games against P5 competition. He's 1-19 (5%) from the 3pt line and shooting 24% overall from the field in conference play. Also shooting 50% from the free throw stripe in B1G games.

Before the season, I expected him to play poorly due to the achilles injury and time away from the court. In the non-conference season I was shocked at his performance. Now, just sad that it was a mirage. He and Tate are possibly the two worst P5 point guards in the country.
And the most shocking part? How many minutes he is still getting... Bench him for his own sake. Poor guy.

I felt the same way. If Groce can't see what the average fan can see than it is time for a change. I'm his biggest defender, but having possible mismatches and not using them is crazy. Putting multiple players on the court who can't score or defend is not defensible.

Why have Malcolm be your primary ball handler but have Tate and Abrams on the court?
