Patterson never got us the recruits we promised ourselves that he would when we hired him. Even the Trinity "pipeline" only got us so much and missed on a couple others, never developed STL more than what would have happened without him. Personally think he underperformed in that regard, not too worried about losing him

Walter's is absolutely purging the illini staff and no 2 cents about it. When he was initially hired I knew there would be some departures but not to this extent. I hate to say this because I loved Walter's but this could turn in a love/hate thing real quick for me.

Absolutely purging is a silly statement. Important to note that each of these guys is leaving for a promotion. You can't fault folks trying to improve their careers. It's a good sign that coaches are moving on for promotions. It wasn't a thing at Illinois football for a long time.

x's and o's are almost the same everywhere, especially for position coaches. Coordinators can get creative with schemes, but ultimately I would think a HC like BB has to put his final stamp of approval on every game plan. (funny aside, I knew a guy who played at Duke when Spurrier was there, and The ol' ball coach wouldn't even know his, or most other defensive players' names lol)

Just need someone that can COMMUNICATE to young men what is expected of them, so that they can play as a unit. Most guys at Illinois wont be playing on Sundays, so for the Illini to have continued success they need someone that can make an average player play (or feel) like a good or great player. I'm no genius, but in my experience the communication and empowerment part of an assistant coach is crucial, and often tough to quantify.

Emotional Intelligence i guess is what I'm saying.

I'm not worried about us. I trust BB to put together an amazing staff - he did it once and he has the necessary connections and reputation to do it again.

To be honest, I would be pretty worried if I were a PU fan. These hires are an early indication that Walters' professional network is tiny. And as a CEO now, he needs to be able to leverage his connections to build an entire program. It's a bad look if it becomes obvious those connections are functionally limited to the program he just left.

You mean a coaching staff filled 100% with alumni... along with the worst record to go with it.

Given the NIL world, do great recruiting assistants make as much sense now? Wouldn't it be better to get the best x's and o's coaches?
can't we get guys who are really good at both ?

So any thoughts we might have to take the position. Could BB be looking at an NFL coach.

we now have three openings on the assistant coaching staff - word is he's looking at the coaching ranks inside the NFL and college

He doesn’t have the connection Bret has. But I’m confident with what Bret’s building here we’ll have plenty of interested quality coaches.
