I'm not good with keeping track of coaching moves, but does anyone know if there are many instances of an assistant coach jumping for a head coaching role within the same conference (and division for that matter)?

Edit: Also, congrats to Walters... Not many of those positions out there. Take it while it's offered.
I can think of a few direct moves like this. It sometimes feels like it happen mor often, but there are probably more indirect route examples.. The best example I have is Hayes-Schembechler-Moeller or Saban-Smart

Kirby smart from bama to Georgia was my first thought. Probably best ever move from coordinator to head coach at highly regarded program.
I guess sarkisian from bama to Texas will count in a couple of years lol.
Tom Herman to Texas.
Tony Eliot from Clemson to Virginia this year.
I guess there may be more than we think. Also I could be inaccurate for a bunch of these
Arizona State just hired an Oregon assistant too.

It happens often enough that it's not really unique or noteworthy.

Here's my summary based on everything that has been posted. For the most part everyone is in agreement with:
1. Good for Ryan and congratulations
2. A HC opportunity in the Big Ten or SEC is huge
3. I don't know what would be a better immediate opportunity than Purdue
4. I am shocked that Purdue made this decision
5. I wish he stayed at Illinois one more year
6. I doubt he is ready for this HC position right now (nothing about him specifically, just based on history)
7. This is a good thing for Illinois football in general
- I trust Bielema will make a good replacement decision
- This attracts more bright young coaches to desire working at Illinois
- Whether you like Lunney or not, his day will come as well

I'm not comparing Bielema/Illinois to Alabama/Saban, but wouldn't that be fun to do (even if a stretch) in the coming years?

If the reason for the constant revolving door is incredible success (meaning we are having success as a team) then yeah, it is a good thing.

I think we are too used to the revolving door because we suck and assistants came and went for better lateral moves.
Exactly. Coaches leaving Illinois for a great opportunity is way different than all the ones that left becasue they weren't wanted or didn't want to be here

Don't get me wrong folks, having Walters leave for a P5 coaching job is a good thing in the sense that it validates his performance as a high level coach. However, this will also likely be a big loss for our side given the strong performance we've seen from him. I'm not upset with Ryan Walters for taking the job, I'm upset that we've lost one of our best coaches in decades.

My comment about it not seeming like the best fit for him didn’t age well. 🤣 I do understand it’s a really good job and especially for a guy just getting his first chance as a HC.

Congratulations to Ryan and thank you for an outstanding 2 years leading our defense.

This seems to be a pretty B1G fish in my opinion... First time head coach getting a chance at a higher performing team in the B10? Not sure it gets a whole heck of a lot better to begin a head coaching career.
It's certainly not the lowest first head coaching gig, but I feel like a mid-tier Pac-12 or Big 12 school that has facilities that don't resemble high school facilities might have been within reach.

My son, who is a.Purdue alum, pointed out that this is our own damn fault. We pound Wisconsin to get Chryst fired, they then dump Leohnard, hire Fickell, Cincinnati hires Satterfield, Louisville hires Brohm, and Purdue hires Walters.

Therefore beating Wisconsin cost us Walters.

I had thought of this about 3 hours ago as well

Much as I like coach Walters, it was totally worth it.
