I can think of a few direct moves like this. It sometimes feels like it happen mor often, but there are probably more indirect route examples.. The best example I have is Hayes-Schembechler-Moeller or Saban-SmartI'm not good with keeping track of coaching moves, but does anyone know if there are many instances of an assistant coach jumping for a head coaching role within the same conference (and division for that matter)?
Edit: Also, congrats to Walters... Not many of those positions out there. Take it while it's offered.
Arizona State just hired an Oregon assistant too.Kirby smart from bama to Georgia was my first thought. Probably best ever move from coordinator to head coach at highly regarded program.
I guess sarkisian from bama to Texas will count in a couple of years lol.
Tom Herman to Texas.
Tony Eliot from Clemson to Virginia this year.
I guess there may be more than we think. Also I could be inaccurate for a bunch of these
Having a constant revolving door of assistants...is not a nice thingHaving your assistants get P5 head coaching jobs....that is a nice thing
Nick Saban has had so many offensive coordinators at Alabama that somebody was actually able to make a top 5 ranking.Having a constant revolving door of assistants...is not a nice thing
It's what happens when you're successful. We also haven't and a constant revolving door of assistants?Having a constant revolving door of assistants...is not a nice thing

You're right a revolving door of assistants is bad. This isn't a revolving door. This is an assistant taking an elevator up to a higher floor. This is good.Having a constant revolving door of assistants...is not a nice thing
Exactly. Coaches leaving Illinois for a great opportunity is way different than all the ones that left becasue they weren't wanted or didn't want to be hereIf the reason for the constant revolving door is incredible success (meaning we are having success as a team) then yeah, it is a good thing.
I think we are too used to the revolving door because we suck and assistants came and went for better lateral moves.
The Oregon assistant was even younger and less experienced than Walters.Arizona State just hired an Oregon assistant too.
It happens often enough that it's not really unique or noteworthy.
Maybe this explains their two year drought in national championships.Nick Saban has had so many offensive coordinators at Alabama that somebody was actually able to make a top 5 ranking.

A group headlined by names such as Steve Sarkisian and Lane Kiffin, who are some of the top Alabama Football offensive coordinators of the Nick Saban era?southboundanddown.com
Would you rather go back to these heady days?Having a constant revolving door of assistants...is not a nice thing
I have full confidence in Coach B to do exactly this. He knew this day was coming and I’m sure helped Walters land the gig. It makes the Illinois DC an appealing position for the best and brightest out there. Bret will get his guy, whoever that is.
It's certainly not the lowest first head coaching gig, but I feel like a mid-tier Pac-12 or Big 12 school that has facilities that don't resemble high school facilities might have been within reach. This seems to be a pretty B1G fish in my opinion... First time head coach getting a chance at a higher performing team in the B10? Not sure it gets a whole heck of a lot better to begin a head coaching career.
I had thought of this about 3 hours ago as wellMy son, who is a.Purdue alum, pointed out that this is our own damn fault. We pound Wisconsin to get Chryst fired, they then dump Leohnard, hire Fickell, Cincinnati hires Satterfield, Louisville hires Brohm, and Purdue hires Walters.
Therefore beating Wisconsin cost us Walters.
I think we are getting to the point where mid tier Pac-12 and Big-12 jobs aren't as good as any BIG job. It's certainly not the lowest first head coaching gig, but I feel like a mid-tier Pac-12 or Big 12 school that has facilities that don't resemble high school facilities might have been within reach.
Much as I like coach Walters, it was totally worth it.My son, who is a.Purdue alum, pointed out that this is our own damn fault. We pound Wisconsin to get Chryst fired, they then dump Leohnard, hire Fickell, Cincinnati hires Satterfield, Louisville hires Brohm, and Purdue hires Walters.

I think that's increasingly plausible. Unless the B1G job is Northwestern. Texas high school football gigs are probably better than Northwestern.I think we are getting to the point where mid tier Pac-12 and Big-12 jobs aren't as good as any BIG job.
