I really thought the Frost hire was great.

I'm not sure who they can find. Is their NIL base that great? My gut tells me that the boosters in Nebraska are a lot more rational than the ones in Alabama, Texas, etc. It was always remarkable that they could do what they did in the middle of nowhere. I think it's tougher and tougher to do that so I'm not sure who signs up for this job.
Someone who wants to coach at a place with a rabid fanbase and also make mucho $$$$$.

It really feels like a hopeless situation at Nebraska because it's more than just a down program, it's an identity crisis.

Places like Florida State and Tennessee have just lost the ability to do the things that make them good from a strategic and talent acquisition perspective. The things that make Nebraska good don't even exist anymore, they are lost to college football's past. Frost was the way to synthesize that in theory but it's just been a total disaster from game 1 there, stunning.

The punishment of their panicked blasphemy against their program's identity when they fired Frank Solich and started playing pro-style with Bill Callahan borders on the biblical at this point.

It appears he will get the full $15M. That's how bad they wanted to get rid of him.

It's an unimaginably stupid use of $7.5M, especially after buyout avoidance was the only reason he got another year in the first place.

OMG. Their AD is an idiot.

Nebraska plays Oklahoma on 9/17 then Indiana on 10/1.

We're you really that worried he would beat Oklahoma?

Also, you could have fired him at 12:01 am on 10/1 (right before the Indiana game).

In any event, you just fire him after his next big 10 loss. They play Indiana, Rutgers, Purdue, then Illinois. It is totally justifiable to fire him after losing to any of those teams. After all, they are Nebraska. No way would Nebraska run the table.

If I was their AD, I would call Sam Pittman and beg for him to come to Lincoln.

Either the athletic department is paying the reported 7.5M buyout difference, in which case is there nothing better to do with that money other than give it to a coach you don't want anymore? Or, if booster's agreed to pay the buyout difference then that is even worse. Booster money could go to pay for NIL for the next coaches first recruiting class. It makes no sense if it's true the buyout drops Oct. 1

Nebraska had better get the next hire right for their own sake. If they don't, current recruits will never remember a time when Nebraska was good, let alone a national powerhouse.

Barring a Shirley Maclaine scenario, there's no chance any recruit is going to remember them being a national powerhouse. It's been a looong time.

I'd argue that current recruits don't really see Nebraska as a powerhouse. I suppose if they visit, they get that sense, but most haven't had the experience of seeing Nebraska as a top program.

Here's Nebraska's AP poll data.

If their next coach is good, for them, this downturn will just be an anomaly from bad coaching.
If their next coach is bad, it will be a generation of failure.

An anomaly implies that this was a singular coaching failure. Mike Riley wasn't good. And Pelini wasn't great, which is why he was fired.

In the last 20 years their highest finish was 14 and only one other time were they better than 20. That's no longer "an anomaly".

Seriously. To put it into perspective, we have a conference title more recently than Nebraska. Their last one was in '99. We won in '01.

I saw a list of Meyer, O'Brien, Fickell, Mullen and Lebby. I don't see Meyer taking a job in the BIG after being at Ohio St. and would Fickell walk away from what he's built to start over at Neb? Is O'Brien waiting for Saban to retire? I could see Neb. hiring a OC from the NFL, but I really think they are going to find it tough to bring in a coach that will be considered a home run hire by the fans. I think most of the coaches on Thamel's list will stay where they are. 20 years ago, it would have been a different story, but what coach who is building something at his current school wants to start over in that pressure cooker?
