Rece Davis lobbying Nebby to poach BB

Carousel can get crazy so I'm not gonna say this won't happen, but I'd actually be surprised if Nebraska went this route considering Bielema hasn't had a winning season as a HC in 6 years.

And if they're waiting to see how Bielema pans out for us this year, what was the epoint of burning millions to buyout Frost??

While I do agree and think BB would be a great fit there….I don’t think they are gonna poach any sitting HC in the B1G.

The "ESPN College GameDay" podcast ran through possible replacements for Scott Frost as the Nebraska football head coach during Monday's podcast. Frost was fired Sunday as the Huskers head coach.
Among the names that ESPN's Rece Davis and Pete Thamel discussed to be the next leader in Lincoln, Nebraska, was Illinois Fighting Illini football head coach Bret Bielema.

Both said they thought Bielema would be a good hire by Nebraska.

"Bret Bielema is that part of the world," Thamel said. "He's obviously from Iowa from his famous tattoo. He has won in the Big Ten West (Division). He would have a distinct style. He has won three Big Ten championships, I believe. And he's done wonders at Illinois already. He's clearly shown programically he can get a place resuscitated. That might be a fun little bidding war. But I believe in Bret Bielema, and I think that he could fit in just fine there."
Bielema lists his hometown as Prophetstown, Illinois, on his Illinois bio. He played football at Iowa from 1989-92. As the Wisconsin head coach from 2006-12, he led the Badgers to Big Ten championships during his final three seasons.
"One thousand percent, another big-time win if they can lure Bret," Davis said. "If they can lure him away from Illinois, move him to Nebraska, that would be a huge win. But I'm sure the Illini will use some of that television money to try to keep that from happening, too."

Title IX goes by individual, not team, opportunity. Almost every NCAA institutional member has more women's sports than men's simply because football will have ~100 participants, meaning those numbers need to be balanced across women's sports. Since women do not have football as a sanctioned sport, you have to increase opportunities through greater scholarship offerings in volleyball/softball/basketball, but also add other sports like field hockey to compensate.
Thanks. I forgot to turn off the sarcasm indicator (/s) 😉

flattered that BB is being talked about as a possible candidate for such a high tier job, reflects well on JW for sure. May cause us to have to up the ante with BB but if we want to play the game we have to pay the price

I don't think Bielema would take a bazillion dollars to go to South Carolina or whatever and make that mistake again, but Nebraska may be a bit more of a fit. I just feel like he's really happy with his staff here and feels like he has the right group, and I think that matters to him a lot.

From the Nebraska side, whereas we kind of looked with a bit of puzzlement on his record at Arkansas and wondered how it translated, it's much more directly what Nebraska is scared of with this hire, and so for that reason I doubt any real interest materializes.

And also, of course, this could all look ridiculous if the rest of our season doesn't go well. The cart is well before the horse here.

But in absolutely every moment, Whitman must always have a shortlist locked in the bottom drawer of his desk. That day comes when you least expect it. I would imagine Ryan Walters has made himself a part of that thought process at this point.

The thing that jumped out at me was “Bielema lists his hometown as Prophetstown, Illinois.” Makes it sound like he isn’t, just says he is.

Ryan Walters would be named interim head coach, which would become permanent as soon as the job posting period was over. You then promote one of the defensive coaches, who - if I remember correctly - almost all have D-coordinator experience. Then for fun, Coach W hires his uncle as linebackers coach. That's the Illini way, after all.

I have a candidate for Nebraska. He has a HCing record of 48-24, has won a conference championship of a P5 conference, has a 6-1 record against current and future BIG teams, and is somewhat familiar with the current Nebraska team.

You have to admit on paper that is a viable candidate.
He's talking about Clay Helton folks.

Listen, I had my eye on him for our job after Lovie, and the harder you look, the less you see.

It's basically impossible to recruit as badly at USC as Helton did.

The best unsexy retread sitting out there right now is Tom Herman, IMO. If I were Colorado I would jump at the chance to hire him over the very young and unproven Walters to be totally honest.

The jobs that are going to be lining up to get Walters are big SEC schools looking for DC-for-hire guys, as they always are. That just becomes a question of money.

FWIW, word is that Bronco Mendenhall wants to get back into coaching.

I know your opinion of Helton and, of course, I was just kidding. They’re not gonna hire a coach from the Sun Belt, especially the coach who beat Frost in his last game. But on paper with no name attached, he certainly looks intriguing. He is off to a good start there scoring 100+ points over first two games. I’m happy for him.

BB is just not a big enough splash (i mean figuratively of course) for the Cornjerkers.
Again, they think they are football blueblood. And if he went there, won the west,
played OSU and lost, its just isn't good enough. never good enough. I think BB knows
that and is in a good place.

I would be ecstatic with Walters as HC. Matt Campbell like career projection going on there. We don't get coordinators like that often.

I definitely hope you are right as I've always kind of pulled for Iowa State as a secondary team behind the beloved (figuring we've got a nice common enemy in that if there's one school that wants Iowa to lose more than us it's the Cyclones), but does Campbell see himself as a lifer at Iowa State? If he's turning down ND, who is he waiting on?
I can tell you from experience that ISU will side with Iowa when we are playing Iowa. So don't go thinking that the enemy of our is our friend. It doesn't work that way in Iowa, they all stick together.

I must say it’s quite the opposite in my experience. They don’t like Iowa, full stop. And you can put me in the “they” as I am an ISU alum ;) Iowa state has its own brand of Athletics that the fan base is quite proud of (i.e. not being smug or entitled like Iowa). Outside of sports though, I would agree with you.

As a side note, the gameday experince in Ames is quite fun with the party buses and RVs. The fans up there do a great job of supporting the program even when the product on the field isn’t great.

For what it’s worth, I never saw Campbell as a lifer so I was surprised to see him stick around last year and this season. He wanted to see the Purdy recruiting class through and when they struggled last season, he may have felt obligated to go out on a higher note. I know the fans still love him, and things look decent so far in a rebuilding year. He’s really approachable and down-to-earth (His alter ego has to PJ Fleck). I think he could work well for Nebraska but he’s got to figure out how to beat Iowa (this year notwithstanding) otherwise those fans will turn on him. I wouldn’t take that job if I were him.

I would never have guessed that. Thanks for sharing. OK, so be it, screw Iowa State as well....if they lose Campbell I won't feel bad for them

Anyone know if any coach has ever been HC at three schools in the same conference? I’ve got to think not, but am curious.
