My name doesn’t check out here.

I hope to be wrong, but this just seems like a formula for developing this year and transferring out next year. I don’t see how the path becomes more clear for him given who we likely have coming. Would have liked to see him stay in and contribute what he could this year. I’m just not a big fan of redshirting in this new NIL world.

Again, would love to be wrong. Dan, am I able to change my name to “sometimes optimistic?” I’m getting older and more skeptical.

Going to be a fun year though so it isn’t all doom and gloom by any means!

It was his own decision. What’s Brad gonna do say no you’re not redshirting?

The Justin Harmon pick up becomes even more important now. I think this is a smart decision for his long term future prospects. Why burn another year playing 10-12 mins a game when he can save the year, bulk up, practice against the vets, and have an inside track at more PT next year? It does stink because he is the spark plug and energizer bunny that we could've used at times(tonight being a good example) but I think there's enough veteran leadership on this team to address slow starts that may take place. It was against Eastern IL but DGL sure looked like a spark plug so maybe that's the answer for now

I'm with you. He completely boxed Dajuan Harris in the scrimmage against Kansas, outright swallowed Tyger up last year. He could put up 0pts a game and if he shuts down the opponent's best and most dynamic player, he's winning you ball games. Yes, he needs to be a better finisher and absorb contact better, but it seemed every time he was put in the game last year, he would tilt the floor and make it seem like we were an actual team was out there. Man I'm going to miss that this year.
Shouldn’t need that this year.

This is a much bigger loss than Goode’s injury last year. We will have many games where we would like his defense and energy.

The Justin Harmon pick up is likely a factor in why he’s redshirting.

Totally understand and agree here. I’m simply stating I think Harris finds himself on the outside looking in and transfers out. No wrong doing on anyone’s part. I would have just preferred to see Harris play this year is all. I’m a fan of the young man, but understand his decision if he didn’t see the path clearly defined this year.

In agreement, though I don't think that first half did wonders for our collective PTSD on that end. I think we have a lot of guys this year who can come in and give a spark. That said, from what we've seen thus far, I'm not sure we have anyone who can give even close to the same sort of spark defensively. And in my opinion, sometimes you need that.

He unfortunately cannot shoot and no amount of muscle is going to change that fact.
I mean he can work on shooting but he really doesn't need to be a great shooter to be a good college player. If he can develop as a ballhandler, passer, and finisher he can be a good offensive player to go along with best defensive guard in the country potential. Like a more athletic version of Aaron Craft.

Even without a shot his quickness will allow him to get to the basket if he can handle the ball and he will be great in transition.

Yeah, I think this and your previous post pretty much nails it. I'm with you on the math just not being there unless we botch portalling next year. I too get the decision, but I too would strongly prefer he play this year and Brad find a way to get him 10min a game. I hope he stays, but I get it if he leaves, but I too think it's far less likely he'll be an Illini next year than it was yesterday. The math behind how Brad attacks the portal just makes it seem difficult.

I would disagree strongly with this statement. Sencire was going to play 5-10 mpg this season
It does however kill my dream of seeing the Illini run a 40 minutes of hell style of defense with hockey style line changes.

Realistically we're missing an athletic big to back up Coleman to run that since Dain wouldn't be a fit.

Given what player movement looks like these days I think it’s a fool’s errand to speculate on who will and won’t go when it’s still the first week of November so I’ll just let that part go. But I do think that for Harris redshirting makes a lot of sense. His big shortcomings are skill deficiencies and strength, so he’s pretty much the exact type of player who should benefit the most from a sit year.

Wow. Can't wait to hear the insiders take on this one.

Have known it was on the table for a little while ... The decision was not made until recently ...

I wasn't surprised by it ... I am sure many remember my comments that Dravyn might need a redshirt year and I hope many of you also remember my post about how much Dravyn has impressed me and how I was wrong because I was ... Dravyn showed up and took Bucks minutes ... That kid ... He's gonna be something special ... Brad LOVES him ... Brad loves all of his guys but there are a select few that we all know are Brad's "guys" (Ayo, DMFW, Trent, Feliz) just to name a few ... Dravyn has quickly elevated himself to be one of those guys ...

Buck in a portal world has made an extremely mature decision and one that will benefit him in the future ... It is so RARE to see that these days ... He is not transferring or anything like that ... So the people starting those "rumors" ... Stop ... This was a Brad/Chester and Harris family decision ... Everyone was in agreement on the plan going forward ... You guys like seeing Fletch work during the summer ... Now he gets a whole year ... I am excited to see what comes of this ... This is what elite teams do ... How many times do you watch other elite teams and see redshirt in front of their starters names ? Take a look at Purdue's roster ... They redshirted the Indiana HS POTY ... This happens A LOT on elite teams ...

The decision buys Harris some optionality for next spring. Gets to see who comes in via the portal, see what Fears does, see how the carousel spins, see if advance in strength and skill will translate into assured material role here or elsewhere.

Not sure anyone can read the tea leaves well enough to say whether it means definitively staying or going.

Agree ... This is a great take ... But as of right now ... He does not plan on going anywhere ...

Love to hear it. Hope you’re right! Thanks for sharing. I can speak for myself and likely for everyone else here that has had doubts that it is more so speculation and nothing concrete. It’s a different world out there in college sports today. Would be incredible if Harris stuck around and led this team in the future. He strikes me as that kind of talent, and I just want to be the team that gets to enjoy his services.

You are funny!!! Ty can’t hit the broad side of the barn and yet you failed to mention that. Ty will never generate the electricity that Sincere does!!

Sincere deserves and gets my applause for making a smart and mature decision for himself and... in the long term....the team. 5-10 min. a game is not what he deserves for his efforts. If, and it is a huge if because no one seems to know what to do about great athletes that can't shoot, he can get some coaching in that area, he could end up getting all the minutes he wants on a pretty good team or two. It is unfortunate that he has a passion to compete in a sport where his coaches evidently did not coach him on the most important part of the game...putting the basketball in the basket.

I, for one, wish him the best, expect to see and enjoy him in an Illini uniform for 3 more seasons, and hope he gets a graduate degree in the process.
