Pitching is the super glue this year. Other years it's the bats. The only constant is excellence.
Good, tough win today (Sunday). Cards took 7 of 10 on the road trip, and now have 84 wins. If they win just half of their remaining 32 games, they will end up with 100 victories for the season. (Pirates would have to go 21-12 just to tie them.)
I would not be surprised in the least to see the Pirates go 21-12. They are good and hungry. I haven't looked at their schedule though.
Like the Cardinals, the Pirates have two series left with each of their Central Division rivals, one home and one away. In addition, they play three games in LA and four in Denver, while the Cardinals have three at home against Washington (beginning tonight) and three at Atlanta to end the season. Half of the Cardinals remaining 32 games are at home, while 19 of the Pirates' 33 games are on the road.
As a non-Cards fan, I don't think they mean "lucky" in terms of avoiding injury. I think they mean "lucky" in that despite all the injuries, the 2015 Cardinals are still on pace for 104 wins. That's just unbelievable. That puts them on a plane with the 2004 Cardinals team.
Surely, you don't think that this team with all the injuries is on the same level as that one in terms of talent?
By the way, I'm not saying it's luck. More like unrivaled organizational depth. I'm just saying where the people who do say it's luck are coming from.
I still think that the Pirates can get to 21, but I also believe the Cards will win more than half their ramaining games. I figure the Cards will continue to win 2 of 3, like they have been doing. At least until the last week, when they hopefully will be in a position to give guys a couple of days off.
Martinez getting much needed rest tomorrow; Marco is taking his place.
@BirdsOnTheBat13: According to @BNightengale, the #STLCards have scratched Carlos Martinez from his Tuesday start. Marco Gonzales will take his place.
I'm kind of surprised they are going with Marco. His numbers at Memphis aren't bad - they are dreadful. I was wondering if he had lingering arm problems. Hopefully, he can rebound in the majors.
I think you do what you have to do to sign Heyward. IMO, one of the best OF's in the game.
Let's talk about Jason Heyward. Since his poor start, he's been on fire. He isn't slugging like we want him to, but he's getting on base at a .350 clip, .293 BA (best on the team), 20 stolen bases (best on the team), gold glove defense, game changing arm, and a great clubhouse guy. What would you offer him? I would go 10-years $225 million with opt out year after year 5. That'll put him at 31, and a chance at another big contract. Think that could get the job done.
I second that. I like his attitude and the intangibles. The power will cone, but he's shown he can hit and can play the field. I think he likes playing in STL, from what I can tell.
Perhaps he will want to skip the whole "adjusting to a new environment" thing yet again. He batted .217 in April and has hit at a .324 rate from May 1 thru last night. And his 4.6 WAR leads the club. (Wacha at 3.8 a distant second). I would love to have a potential super star RF locked down for awhile.

Wasn't Grichuk always able to swing, it was just throwing that was the problem? Might be misremembering.
Not according to Mo last night.
