Very entertaining segment with " Kitty Kaat " Jim Kaat joining Danny Mac for an inning and hearing about the 82 championship Cardinals team .....Kaat brought up Warren Spahn and Johnny Sain and reminded me of the old saying "" Spahn and Sain and pray for rain ""....

Cardinals new additions to the rotation are looking impressive .....Quintana with 2 solid starts and Montgomery has 11 straight scoreless innings in his 2 starts....he just set a career hit for # of pitches in a game and has been so effective with his inside pitches....

Arenado just hit a homer and now the Cardinals lead 3-0.......

Go Cardinals.................

JMHO , I don't think Carlson is the answer as far as leading off for the Cardinals....His OBP is not ideal for that position and I think he would be better served hitting 6th or 7th until he raises that number up some......

Edman is in a downturn as far as production and I guess if Nooooooobaar is gonna be the primary starter in right field then I would lead off with him as they had been doing the last 4-5 games........

Montgomery could be the steal of the trade deadline.....

I like it a lot.................................I really really do...............................

To say Jordan Montgomery has burst upon the Cardinals’ scene would be something of an understatement. But, before the left-hander acquired from the Yankees had reeled off 11 consecutive scoreless innings in his first two starts, first baseman Paul Goldschmidt admitted he had known little about the 6-foot-6 Montgomery.
“It’s been good,” said Goldschmidt. “ I think that’s all I’ve ever seen him pitch (other than highlight videos). “Literally, when he started against the Yankees (on Saturday), I was asking the first-base coach what pitches he had.
“But, man, he’s done great for us.”
Third baseman Nolan Arenado didn’t have much more knowledge of Goldschmidt other than to surmise, “If you’re in the Yankees’ rotation, you’re probably pretty good. So I knew he was solid. It’s been a lot of fun to play defense behind him.”

Montgomery said he enjoyed having that support in the field. “The defense has made it easy for me to do that—being able to throw to contact and knowing they’re going to be able to make a great play,” said Montgomery.
“But I definitely wanted to make a couple of good impressions and help us win.”
Counting Jose Quintana and Chris Stratton, who came with Quintana from Pittsburgh, Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol, “We got the right guys.”
Montgomery and left-hander Quintana, have allowed just three runs, all by Quintana, in 23 innings for an earned run average of 1.17. The Cardinals have won all four of those starts, including Friday night's 3-1 win over Milwaukee at a sold-out Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals’ big two did it again Friday night in a series-opening win against the Brewers.
Paul Goldschmidt homered, sending the Cardinals ahead 2-0 in the first inning.
Nolan Arenado homered, expanding the lead to 3-0 in the sixth and providing insurance that came in handy when the Brewers scored a run in the seventh.
Manager Oliver Marmol and players not named Goldschmidt and Arenado are running out of ways to praise the seasons the All-Star corner infielders are hammering out together.
What Marmol must continue to try to do is come up with ways to make sure the two-man wrecking crew does as much damage as possible.

Goldschmidt and Arenado are crushing it at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots in Marmol’s lineup.
Leadoff and the No. 2 spot are leaving a lot to be desired.
Goldschmidt and Arenado are heavyweight headliners.
Their op
The Cardinals’ leadoff OPS (.607) ranks 27th in the majors and 14th in the National League. Detroit, Washington and Oakland are the only teams with a lower leadoff OPS than the Cardinals. All three are in last place in their respective divisions.
At the No. 2 spot, the Cardinals have a season-long OPS of .837. That ranks fifth in baseball and second in the NL. Good news!
ening act is crickets.

With 50 games to go, it is a bit premature to call the Cardinals series with Milwaukee a showdown. But there is a battle for first place going on this weekend in the National League Central Division and the Cardinals inched farther ahead Friday night before a packed house of 45,669 at Busch Stadium.
Left-hander Jordan Montgomery, unscored on in his first two starts since coming in a trade from the New York Yankees for gimpy outfielder Harrison Bader, knocked off six scoreless innings, striking out a season-high eight and permitting just four hits. And the Cardinals rode home runs from their twin terrors, Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado, for a 3-1 victory that increased their lead over the Brewers to 1 ½ games.

Goldschmidt has 28 homers for the season and Arenado 25 but he’s belted four in the past five games.
The two teams have played 13 times this season, with the Cardinals winning seven, accounting for their scant lead in the division. Albeit with 50 games to go.
Ryan Helsley, called on to record the final six outs, gained his 12th save for the Cardinals, including whiffing Brewers power hitter Rowdy Tellez on a 102 mph fastball with a runner on in the eighth.
In the ninth, Helsley was touched for a leadoff single by former Cardinal Kolten Wong, who received a standing ovation before his first at-bat of the night. But Helsley set down the next three hitters as the Cardinals won for the ninth consecutive time at Busch Stadium.

Montgomery and left-hander Jose Quintana, also acquired at the Aug. 2 trade deadline, have allowed just three runs, all by Quintana, in 23 innings for an earned run average of 1.17.

Juan Yepez, on a minor league rehabilitation option as he recovers from a forearm strain, will spend the weekend in Memphis with the most attention being paid to his throwing arm. Yepez will play outfield at least once and possibly more this weekend.
“We need him (to be able) to throw the baseball,” Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Friday.
Eventually, probably in the next week, Yepez, who has 11 homers for the Cardinals, could be activated and then what happens?
Earlier, the answer as to who would be stricken from the active roster would be Lars Nootbaar, who has made that drive down I-55 before to Memphis. But Nootbaar is a regular player, for the moment.

That would leave left-handed-hitting Corey Dickerson and Brendan Donovan because Nolan Gorman, Albert Pujols and Andrew Knizner would seem to be the safest among those who don’t start every day.
But Dickerson has been hot lately, batting .370 since the All-Star break. And Donovan’s versatility and ability to hit both handed pitching (.286), as well as right-handers (.279) would seem to put him in good stead.
The fly in the ointment here is that switch-hitters Dylan Carlson and Tommy Edman, both whom were in Friday’s lineup as right-handed hitters, have been non-productive, for the most part, against right-handers. Carlson, who led off on Friday against Milwaukee, was hitting .214 against right-handers and Edman was at .251.

And honestly, the toughest road trip they should have the rest of the season will be the final multiple city one in late September when they go to San Diego for 3, L.A. for 3, and Milwaukee for 2. That one and the next road trip they take after this homestand (3 in Arizona, 5 at Wrigley) will be the only multiple city road trips they'll take. The others are 1 city and then back home.

Not a Cardinal question, but why does Tatis suspension start now and not wait until he is ready to play?

Has nothing to do you with Cardinals, or an answer to your question, but I find this whole Tatis thing fascinating in that I can't recall a player of Tatis' stature getting busted at such an early stage in his career. I really wonder what impact it's going to have on his career. He was a HOF potential guy. Will his career implode? Can he come back after his suspension and just pick up where he left off? If he does go on to have a great, HoF caliber career, and never gets busted again, will people be willing to look past this? Or will he end up in the same situation as guys like Bonds/Clemens/McGwire?

Heard them mention on the Cardinals broadcast tonight that Tatis is the 3rd player in MLB history to finish in the top 3 in MVP voting and miss the following season. The other two were Sandy Koufax (who retired after the 1966 season) and Moises Alou (who tore his ACL in an offseason treadmill accident after the 1998 season).

Wow, I hate the idea of starting with a runner on 2nd base. So few games go to extra innings. If you need to speed up games, it needs to be in the 9 innings leading up to extra innings. Are there any of these ideas that don't tamper with the history of the game?

Yes, I am that guy, lol.

As hitter after hitter for the Milwaukee Brewers retreated to the bench unsatisfied Saturday night, the Busch Stadium crowd was feeling it. Would it be the first no-hitter pitched here by the Cardinals or anyone else since 1983 when the late Bob Forsch pulled off his second?
Adam Wainwright said he had felt it about two pitches into the game.
“I had command of everything," he said. “I thought I was going to throw a no-hitter tonight.”
Opposing 2021 National League Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes, who was his usual overpowering self, Wainwright felt there was an occasion to which to rise.
“Tonight I had the same mentality as when we were in Toronto (facing Kevin Gausman). We're playing against a great team, against a great pitcher,” said Wainwright.

“The guy (Burnes) is a reigning Cy Young winner. Everybody thinks I'm too old — that's what I'm thinking in my mind too. I thought this was a great opportunity, to, you know, compete. I love that.
“I had good stuff, a good plan. I was executing well. I really wanted to throw a no-hitter tonight. I really did. From the first inning on I thought tonight was going to be the night.”

Bob Forsch would have been smiling. The last Cardinals pitcher to author a no-hitter in St. Louis was not on hand Saturday night at Busch Stadium to witness potential history, having died in 2011.
But Forsch’s second wife, Jan, and daughters Amy and Kristin were here to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1982 Cardinals World Series championship. There was almost much more to celebrate, though.
Adam Wainwright, 18 days shy of 41 years old, flirted with the first no-hitter tossed here since Forsch threw one on Sept. 26, 1983, against the Montreal Expos. He took it 6 2/3 innings before Milwaukee’s Andrew McCutchen singled with two outs in the seventh.
Nolan Gorman’s one-out double to left center scored Paul Goldschmidt from first base for the first run of the game in the home seventh as the Cardinals struck first. The Brewers tied the score in the eighth on a Luis Urias homer. Wainwright, who threw 109 pitches, gave up only three hits and fanned eight for nine innings but he did not get the complete game or the win.

Nor did the Cardinals. The Brewers scored two runs off reliever Giovanny Gallegos in the 10th inning to pull out a 3-2 triumph and cut the Cardinals' lead in the National League Central Division back to one-half game.
Milwaukee's win on Saturday ensured that whichever team wins Sunday's series finale will depart the series in first place. Through 14 meetings this season, the teams are 7-7.

Corey Dickerson, four for eight against Milwaukee ace right-hander Corbin Burnes and a .370 hitter since the All-Star break, was in the Cardinals’ lineup hitting second Saturday night at Busch Stadium. Until he wasn’t.
Dickerson left the clubhouse in street clothes before the game, presumably to have an examination pertaining to the recurrence of a left calf injury that had landed him on the injured list in June.
Brendan Donovan took the start in left field with slumping Tyler O’Neill taking a seat on the bench. But Dickerson was able to return for the game and was sent in as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning.
There is the possibility that right-handed-hitting Juan Yepez, who is at Memphis on injury rehab option for a right forearm strain, could return next week but manager Oliver Marmol said that would be both health and performance related. Yepez was to play the outfield for six innings on Saturday night and at least that long on Sunday but Marmol also wants to see if Yepez can shake the recurring habit of his pulling off the ball and flying open while at bat.

----------------------------------------------------------

So , he leaves in street clothes to get examined and then is in right field for the decisive play that was Renfro's triple and couldn't reach it.....yep.....ok...

I guess my thought is TON pinch hit in the 9th , why not put him in left and move Donovan to right field.....I got up late this morning and haven't read the comments section on these 3 articles , so bear with me .....

I thought that triple should have been caught. We will never know, but Noot would probably have caught it.
