... disagree with the thoughts that this won't derail the season. This team went from top 10 with Final Four potential to a bubble team and even that's a maybe. You just don't remove a first team All American and replace him.

Most people are going to agree with you. My take is not the most likely thing to happen. But it is possible given the way that Guerrier has come on strong lately as a talented veteran (the new Alpha?) And Hawkins still has more in his game to give. So does Goode. And we’ve seen what Domask is capable of in breaking loose.

Maybe be the Illini won’t be able to compete at a Final Four level. We'll soon get an idea. But there is no reason why they cannot go Sweet Sixteen at least. And once you’re at that level you still have a chance.

Coach U has known about this situation for a while according to reports. And if so, you know he’s been thinking about how to handle this and what to do with his roster. Probably for a good while now.

As they say, you can’t always control what’s going to happen to you in life (as a Team here, that is). But you can always have control over how you respond to it.

Play and fight like hell on the court, Illini. Give it your best without excuses. Make Illini Nation proud, and yourselves. That is what’s required here.

Thanks for sharing. Not trying to distract but here are some serious points about the DA.

"County records show that 10 attorneys’ employment with the DA’s office ended during her first year in office, including six who were hired by the previous administration and four who Valdez hired herself. Just one attorney whose employment began prior to 2021 remains with the office.

Eight additional DA’s office staff members’ employment ended within her first year in office; six of them had been hired under the previous administration. Altogether, employment ended for 18 out of 55 people (about 31%) who worked under Valdez during her first year in office, county records show. "

She doesn't seem to be a credit to her profession, but I'd caution anyone against thinking or expecting this means these charges will be thrown out. It just adds another interesting angle to this

I get that everyone's social media presence is carefully curated in this day and age - but this really was a shock to me, considering all of the work that he puts in and seemingly good head on his shoulders. If someone told me this was going to happen to a member of the IL bball team, Terrance would have been at the bottom of my list.

There are a lot of things bigger than basketball in this world though, I guess we will have to wait and see how this plays out.
Agree. I realize he is young, but why put yourself in such a compromising position. He has worked so hard to get to this level of play.

Don't want to take any side. This is a serious charge. This young man's last season in college bball and potentially his career has been called into question. I hope there is a thorough investigation and if guilty, that this guy gets the book thrown at him. But let's not be quick to pass judgement, as look what happened to the ex Bills punter who got cut immediately and was ultimately found innocent.

We don't know that he did.

And I hate making that statement if it turns out he is guilty of what's accused(because then he deserves everything coming his way and more) .. but in this crazy world we live in I think it has to be called out that there are multiple scenarios where TSJ ends up the victim here..

No he didn’t. He played 6 games. Brandon Miller, who had no charges brought against him, but brought Miles his gun, was the one at the center of the controversy for not being suspended. Ultimately, this is similar to the TSJ situation - no charges, no suspension. Charges, suspension.
Thanks for the clarification.

Not sure why you quoted me in this. Nothing I said is laying blame at anyone's feet. Just a comment that her professional misconduct doesn't mean this is going away.

But I will clarify that it shouldn't. Everyone deserves their day in court

Insiders, please correct me if this is a faulty assumption, but I’m guessing the charges came as a complete shock to the coaches and athletic administrators, even as they’ve known about the investigation since the beginning. I’m also assuming they believe TSJ is 100% innocent and were under the impression that any evidence or lack thereof pointed in TSJ’s favor.

I say this because it seems counterintuitive for the university to allow a video like “a day in the life of TSJ” or the “Scariest thing in college basketball” meme to be released if they truly believed such a crisis was just days ahead. Even the Secret Santa video would seem tone deaf if they knew serious trouble was brewing.

So I guess my question is… just how shocked or not shocked were all involved when the official charges were levied? (I’ll understand if you can’t answer, but I still feel the need to ask.)

Young people engaging in sexual activities is not a compromising position. We don’t know anything besides TSJ went to Kansas for the football game. As of right now we don’t even know that he even actually engaged in sexual activity with this unnamed person.

That this is a program alterting event is an easy conclusion to reach.
Disagree. Jaylon Tate, Kendrick Nunn, guy who got in trouble in Spain (see already forgot about that one) Leron Black and the knife. Seemed to have got beyond those. I trust the Illini will get past this regardless. I love TSJ and hope for the best!!

Regarding merit of a charge, what is the threshold? Can I just walk into the police office and make a crime claim and get someone arrested? Doesn't it seem there was some effort to establish a viable case here before a charge was filed, especially since it says they all knew about this since September?
Kind of. It's ultimately up to the DA to bring charges or not. With cases of sexual assault there may be very little evidence other than the victims statement. Edit, again that doesn't mean this is the case here. There very well could be a mountain of evidence against him. Just a terrible situation regardless of what the truth is.

It tells you how ignorant people get when it comes to allegations of this nature.
I wouldn't go a far as to call people ignorant when it comes to allegations, but would say that people don't handle shock well and rush to put an end to the story in one day. As time passes, minds clear.

I think that JW should have come out today to speak on this and not have waited until tomorrow to give some clarity, which would put an end to the insane takes.....but he has his reasons and will handle it appropriately.

The tragedy to this promising basketball season is irrelevant in contrast to the tragedies facing Shannon and the accuser.

Horrified by the reaction of many Illini fans. Immediately attacking the assistant district attorney in Lawrence in a desperate attempt to undermine the credibility of the charge is shocking.

My hope is that Shannon is innocent, but until then he should be treated like every other person charged with rape.

2 sides to this:

The real life aspect - this sucks for all parties involved, if this is true then we can only sympathize with the victim and hope they get all the help they need. If it's not true then we should do the same for TSJ as he has been a great representation of what Illini basketball is based on the way he speaks of his team and coaches and all other parties with the university (ofc if he did do this then I don't agree with this statement)

The basketball side - We can assume he most likely won't play for the next couple games if not the entire season regardless of outcome. How does this impact the team and who will step up.
- This could potentially give Dain a chance to become a bigger part of the offense/minutes - he always has had a knack to score the ball but needs the ball close to basket and with TSJ being such an effective driver it made it tough for their offensive styles to mesh.
- Who will join the starting lineup : Hawkins, Domask, Guerrier, Rodgers, ? - My prediction is either Goode or Dainja -longshot of Harmon or Hansberry
- Harmon will be a guy who will need to step up big time, we have seen other guys have stellar games this season and Harmon has that ability to be a good scoring option but hasn't had as much opportunity since he was never the focal point of the offense - with TSJ out that opens up a lot more shot opportunities that I feel Harmon could get a good chunk of those
- Does this give Sencire to play this season and forgo his redshirt. This is my biggest prediction because TSJ was our best defender or top 3 at least. Losing him will impact our defense more than our offense because of how well he was able to shut down the other teams best player (or whoever he was guarding). Sencire would be able to bring an edge on defense that would out weigh his offensive deficiencies. He also would be a compliment to Gibbs Lawhorn who has that offensive mindset but is lacking on defense since he hasn't had that time to improve his defense especially going into big ten play

I get that basketball side is definitely not as important as the real life side of things in this situation. With the limited information on the what actually happened I think we should more focus on how the team will move on from this as if your team lost its best player due to injury. Once we know more information that will impact how we approach the real life side of things.

If this were to happen last year I would have a lot less confidence in the team being able to be move on and be successful compared to this roster because this roster plays as a team and plays together and will hopefully be able to continue that with out without TSJ the rest of the season

Douglas County Kansas DA running for reelection.

I recommend reading a little about this DA. Here is just a recent tidbit 👀

This is an absolutely unbelievable read. This was published last week! They recommended suspending her law license for a year LAST WEEK.

If everyone deserves to be assumed innocent until proven guilty then why suspend him? If he is guilty, then that will bring consequences. If he is innocent, the suspension will be punishment for something he didn't do.
Because the DIA apparently has a policy about this. Doesn't mean it's fair or just. It's simply the existing rules. The minute this was made public it became a political matter for the university. That's a dimension that can't be ignored and, in many cases, drives the subsequent steps taken.

I worked in Knoxville, Tennessee for six months in '91, including September and October. Seemed like every other week one UT football starter or another was under arrest for something. Reckless op, assault, sexual assault (IIRC), etc... Miraculously on Friday charges were dropped, bail was met, whatever, and the accused played on Saturday.

SEC aside, that was 1991. It's 2023.
