For clarification, are you saying it happened at a tailgate?

Also, wondering if they were hanging out with Kansas basketball players there? I could be wrong but I thought TJ and Hunter trained at the same place in the summer maybe.
Was in Lawrence that night for the football game. Hunter and TSJ walked past us on the street outside the stadium post game.

1. If the young lady was intoxicated, I would guess that’s enough to at least get him guilty of something that would end his Illini career even if he had eligibility left. He’s 23, she’s 17/18… so the “we were both drinking” defense isn’t going to work.
2. I read on another forum that KS has four types of rape: age, force, unconscious, unable to consent. He was charged with Force. On the one hand, that would seem like it would require more physical evidence, on the other hand, the unable to consent would seem like the more slam-dunk case if the 17/18 year old were intoxicated.

Of course, none of us really know anything at this point. Revisit Jaylon Tate’s accusation and later innocence for a reminder on that.

7. I recall there being a missed foul call along the baseline near the end of the game in which one of Groce's teams made the tournament- a first round game that would have gotten us into at least the next round- don't recall the specifics.
I believe it might've been in the second round vs miami (could be completely wrong)
They missed 1 or 2 out of bounds calls that couldn't be reviewed

Tacomallini

Washington State
Tragic, but others have expressed that.
Does TSJ even go back to campus at all? I imagine the suspension means no training facilities, no practice, no team activities, right? Not sure that completing whatever master's degree he's working on is a priority. Presumed innocent and all, I could still see him wanting to just lay low, train, and lawyer up as quietly as possible in the meantime. Gut punch.

In today's hypersensitive world where everyone wants to be a victim, an accusation is a conviction. End of story.

I just want to throw out there that it really isn’t morally questionable or “victim shaming” for Illini fans (or others who somehow “know” TSJ) to have TSJ’s back 100% at this moment. If your brother got charged with this and maintained his innocence, you’d have faith in him until you had reason to doubt him, without necessarily having anything to say about the alleged victim’s character either. And in at least some sense, Shannon is a member of our Illini family.

Obviously, if more damning evidence comes to light, this goes out the window. But fully supporting him now is morally defensible and even more understandable for all of us to do. Doesn’t mean you HAVE to “take his side” at this stage, of course … needless to say, this is a tragic situation and a complicated issue. But there’s a very coherent argument that the “default” is to trust him until more facts come out. And I think at this point that’s where I am. 🤷🏼‍♂️
I stand by you Fighter!

Sounds like a classic she said, he said, alcohol involved, consent/morning after regret defense. These cases s*ck, for both sides, and often are never charged. If she was bruised, battered and went to the cops that night or next morning, anyone, including TSJ, would have been arrested immediately. Just my educated guess. Don't go all political on me, I have been both a prosecutor and defense attorney over my career. Just talking reality.
100% on the money. To add to that if she were bruised and battered the university of Illinois would have known it in September and TSJ would have been given his walking papers right then.

No chance Underwood or Whitman let him play if there was any “lien” to him being “probably” guilty. Their jobs are on the line also.

There ain't nothing "cursed" about a program in some of these scenarios.

You've had guys in domestic violence charges, drunk drivers that left their teammate injured in a car, guys smashing car windows and running from the cops. Burglary allegations.

This is in no way a comment on the TSJ situation, just having former players that showed lack of character is not a "cursed" program.

Force or fear and I imagine the latter can be interpreted quite differently depending on the DA but more challenging for a conviction.

too early to tell
You may or may not know this, but being unrelated to the case itself, I feel comfortable asking. To avoid all of the suspicions and inquiries, why is JW waiting until tomorrow night before the game to address the media? Seems odd to let the media run amok, then drop the presser in right before tip?

The Illini basketball curse strikes again. I hope it's not true, but regardless, TSJ has likely played his last college game.

The program only has to focus on dealing with this the correct way. Put the law and the people above the sport. Stick to an ethical anchoring. And then, on the court, it’s next man up. We could all live with a team that doesn’t go quite as far if the team kept its integrity along the way. The silver lining is guys like Goode or Domask get to step into bigger roles and some of the Freshmen may get a bit more court time.
Terrence is a person. Who to this point has not been convicted. Is the ethical thing to do throw him under the bus prior to a conviction, in order to claim a moral high ground for the University. Then next man up?

Certainly it is the easiest way out for the administration. I’d like to believe Josh will factor in more information. Certainly if anyone on the staff has evidence Terrence has or could be a threat to someone I’d hope he’d suspended and expelled. But absent that evidence, I’d hope they would stand with him until such evidence is presented and Terrence proven guilty.

This is such an Illinois basketball thing to happen. Just as we're on an upswing, something happens to derail the season. I am not understanding why Whitman and Underwood didn't just indefinitely suspend him before the season began if there were allegations swirling. Did they not do their own internal investigation into the matter? This seems so off to me

You're the third or fourth person to bring this up. The charges were filed by Jennifer Tatum, the Chief Assistant District Attorney, NOT the DA you're talking about. Probably worth noting before you go too far down that rabbit hole.

This is a message to everybody, but I am just quoting you since it came to mind after reading your comment.

Can we please refrain from using people's names? I don't believe anyone on this forum would use that information in any negative manner, but there are people on the internet who would, and I think doing our best to protect the identities of the people involved is important.

If everyone deserves to be assumed innocent until proven guilty then why suspend him? If he is guilty, then that will bring consequences. If he is innocent, the suspension will be punishment for something he didn't do.
Yes but understand that innocent and guilty beyond a reasonable doubt are very different things.

My only question from a legal perspective is whether being suspended/terminated from a state university is prohibited as opposed to permitted at a private university

One possibility: obviously this has been talked about around the program for months, and certainly the same must be true in Lawrence. It's possible that reporters have heard things but didn't have enough to publish absent an actual charge. Now that the door's open, in the next 24 hours, there might be new details coming out either here or there and Whitman might feel that it's best to let that stuff shake down before making a statement then having to amend/backtrack based on additional news that comes out.

Potentially due to news cycle...?

Make a statement before a game, before a long holiday weekend, before a big sports weekend... And the news will have run it's course onto the next thing.

ETA: I also like Super Nintendo Chalmers thought process above.

He wasn't charged with a crime?

Seems like a pretty decent excuse. You can't just suspend people for an accusation. And its not like the school is interviewing witnesses in Kansas. Letting the legal system play out is not a bad thing

Exactly

Because the DIA was likely told in September only that they were investigating Terrance and not for what specifically.

What can you do at that point? You stick by your guy if he says he is innocent and wait for more for info.

A horrible day for many, many people, all around.

So, TSJ goes to watch his football brethren in Lawrence, where he is known by many, to include Illini and Kansas folk. He played Kansas 2x a year, home and away, when at Texas Tech.

Did he go by himself? I cant believe he went alone.

Is anyone else involved?

Did Illinois (not that they have to), or his manager/agent give any type of training on how to handle the spotlight under new found fame and mo ey? The downfalls and concerns of NIL and the amount of money these kids are making scares me. They aren't ready to realize what a night out being the spotlight can turn into.

Regardless, I'd say he will never don the illini uniform again as this will take months, or longer to play out.
