One included Chief motifs and would have included a grant from Nike/others to the Native American studies program to provide a required Freshmen event to educate them on Native American history. That got denied by the University.

LOL

The thing that makes this so ridiculous is that the basketball jerseys could hardly more blatantly wink at the Chief. This narrative was prepared in advance, was totally undercut by what was actually presented, but is just going forward anyway.

What would they have done about the NCAA?

After seeing them IRL:

Like the White on White Football uniforms.
Hate the Navy on Navy
Indifferent on the Orange on Orange

Don't like the Orange/Orange Basketball
Love the Navy/Navy basketball
Solid thumbs up on the White/White

Victory Badge is nice as well.

Any chance they still use this white helmet at all?

Loved it.

I've heard things about 3 rejected proposals which were pretty detailed. One included Chief motifs and would have included a grant from Nike/others to the Native American studies program to provide a required Freshmen event to educate them on Native American history. That got denied by the University.

I don't believe that, but if it were true, thank god it got denied. We can leave the self-interested attempts at guilt absolution via pandering and bribes to Dan Snyder.

Who cares. So we wouldn't have been able to host tournament games (it served us so well in volleyball this past season lol)...not the end of the world

Edit: plus the NCAA may not even be around that much longer with all these lawsuits

What would they have done about the NCAA?

I would assume the tribe was on board as well, which makes sense because that rumor went around a while ago.

From what few ideas I heard, they sounded pretty cool. But there is a difference between sounding cool and looking cool.

Come on.

The athletic department taking active steps to kneecap their teams' chances at success actually is pretty much the end of the world when it comes to them carrying out their job description.

I really have to question the thinking of someone who breezily hoists a middle finger at our non-revenue sport athletes in favor of a logo.

Not saying we should've done it at all, at this point I'm glad we've kinda moved on from Chief. I'm just saying that the NCAA should be the least of our concerns if we were to ever even entertain the idea of Chief imagery

Also, I'm a big supporter of the volleyball team here.

We've got a men's tennis team capable of winning the national title this year (OK, maybe not) and next (much better chance). Not being able to host the regional round would make that tougher.

Oh, and I'm sure we'll want to put in a bid to host the finals again at some point.

Oh, I loathe them. But they put us in a position where we had to choose between the Chief and our student athletes, and I'm glad we chose the latter.

The choice was more about money than student-athlete benefits, but I think they still did what they had to do. Unfortunate as it was.

It's a shame both sides were so unwilling to compromise back then. There was a good proposal put forth recently that probably can't happen because of where things have moved to. But had it been worked on at the time, we may be in a different boat.

But I digress.

Never say never. (Wasn't that a James Bond movie?) :chief:

BTW .... Marching Illini are going to get some new T-shirts, etc. from Nike. Some of them are wishing for free shoes and $$ so they don't have to dry clean their own uniforms tho!

Yeah, I've got a whole rant/argument/perspective for what should have happened with the Chief, and really still could. Would have taken both sides to admit they weren't totally right and work for something we could have all been proud of. And I'd love to have that discussion with the people here some time, but I know this isn't the thread to do it.

Do we have a Chief thread or some sort of policy on limiting Chief talk or whatever? I know it's a touchy subject, so I don't want to go somewhere I shouldn't. (And I certainly know derailing another thread isn't the way to do it.)

Even if Nike were allowed to design a new Chief logo, I highly doubt it would have been better than this: :chief:

the NCAA never was the teeth behind the change. that was just cover for the admin to use when they canned the Chief. the NCAA is really powerless now, and wont be in charge of big time revenue college sports in 3-4 years anyway.

our admin doesnt want N.A. imagery stuff. that is plain and simple. The zig zags on the hoops unis was all they could do, and those wont be around long anyway.

Two things are unfortunate:

1.) The University never gave an honest attempt to deal with the issue, we buried our heads in the sand for the most part. Granted, the same fans that are still bitter the chief is gone 7 years later are the same ones that would have blown up had the University announced it was going to completely open the chief up for discussion. That said, there was an opportunity that was missed because doing nothing and allowing the divide to grow between pro and anti chief groups was the expedient thing to do.

2.) The NCAA forced our hand before anything could have organically happened on campus.

either way, it's gone, done, not coming back, no longer a part of the university... which to me is "whatever".

The NCAA never would have been involved had the issue been addressed early on. I think the university thought the issue would go away and by the time "they" realized it wouldn't, the opportunity to do something proactive was long gone.

Please God give us a leprechaun, Asian Carp, or a cornstalk, anything as a mascot so we can stop listening to all the Native American nonsense. I fear if we don't get a mascot we'll be hearing people pining for the Chief for 50 years. Time to move on.
