I think the grey looks dull to me. What would you pair it with pants and helmet? I like that metallic orange as it is consistent with our traditional colors but jazzed up for this century.

I think there will be a grey helmet and pants to go with this jersey.

Soccer wore their new Orange Uni's today, Awesome, the new Orange really pops out. Unfortunately the Illini dropped their opener 3-1.

I know there have been some complaints about the rebrand, but the athletic department as done a good job implementing the new marks.

I got back down to school the other day and it's been real cool spotting all the changes. The small things--billboards, signs, decorations, etc--aren't really talked about on here so I just thought I'd give them a quick mention.

Boring. If someone was wearing that out no one would know what the team is.

Imagine it with the rest of the uniform with orange helmet/white pants. It's just one part of the uniform, it will look sharp with whatever they decide to do with the helmet/pants.

Highly doubt it

They won't be wearing an orange helmet or pants. There isn't one speck of orange on the jersey. The white and navy helmets and pants both have orange, so those wouldn't make sense either. It would look awful if they wore any helmet or pants they've already released.

Maybe I missed it, but are we sure the football team will ever be wearing these? Maybe they are just for fans.

Nike doesn't make fashion jerseys for college teams. They used to for the top schools, but they haven't done that for several years.

We'll then I'm disappointed. I can't even tell it's an Illini jersey. I guess I'll wait to see the full uniform combo first though.

With regards to the gray uniforms. It looks like they literally just took the orange jersey pictures and put them in gray tones to show the uniform. In other words, maybe they don't have a picture of the grays yet but want to at least get it out on the website to start getting orders. I think that's why the shield has no orange in it and even the navy looks more dull.
With respect to when we wear it, I'm just gonna throw this out there, but maybe it will be for our game at Nebraska. Nebraska has already announced they will be wearing alternates for that game. Maybe this is our answer.

Hopefully not!

I'd say there's like a 95% chance we see the team wear those grey uniforms this year. UofI08's thought is an interesting one...maybe we'll see them against Nebraska

Well now that you put it that way....

It's still boring....

I doubt it... mostly because Nebraska is an Adidas school...

i don't know where we'd wear them... I'd think a home game... which leads to two questions.

vs. who.
what do they wear?

Kinda depends on how dark the gray is. Tough to tell from a photo like that.

doesn't matter... other team may have to wear colored uniforms though depending what you want to call that.

(rules don't state home team has colored uniforms, they state one has white, the other colored... I believe they've also opened up the possibility that both teams can wear contrasting colors after UCLA/USC did it a few years ago and the away team stupidly lost a timeout as punishment)

these were sold last year.

OK I was wrong about them not selling them for a few years. However, in Nike's eyes Illinois and USC are on totally different levels. Nike isn't going to make fashion jerseys for Illinois. They don't even make the higher end replica jersey for Illinois

I think they would look better with a more contrasting color, like orange in place of the blue. The blue and gray blend together, the contrast with orange would be a cool look.

Agreed, the blue and grey just wash each other out. Even if just the collar, stripes on the sleeves, and trim around the numbers were orange it would make a huge difference.

Your are correct. NCAA rules require the visiting team to normally wear white jerseys. A visiting team may only wear colored jerseys to away games if both teams agree in writing to wearing colored jerseys for that particular game. The home team’s respective conference must also officially certify that the visiting team’s jersey colors contrast with the home team’s jersey colors. Pretty sure a home team can wear white jerseys if it gets permission and the road team wears colored jerseys (thinking LSU).

But that's what I'm saying. A gray jersey is just as "colored" as an orange or a blue one.

IMO the same standard as soccer should apply. Teams can wear whatever they want so long as that day's referee agrees that he'll be able to tell the teams apart.

few other teams have made it work (grey with white)

can also find examples of schools wearing grey as the required white uniform. (don't know if that needs special clearance)
