As far as the Tiley kabuki is concerned, I'm actually ok with giving them some time to see if he's interested. But, I don't understand why he wasn't option 1B to the point where they're just now talking to him, and I certainly don't want this process dragging out for another month because our donors have to be told no 4-5 times. If he's interested, great, make it happen. Otherwise, let the Whitman show get on the road already.

Tiley was really busy until Sunday. I highly doubt he was engaging in discussions about the Illinois AD job until the Open was over. I don't think it'll take another month. Give it a week, two at the most. If it's a no go, move on to Whitman.

If Tiley is still in the mix, which he appears to be or we'd just hire Whitman, this isn't your typical AD recruitment. If what some posters have alluded to about the need for complete secrecy on Tiley's part is true, I can see this dragging out like it is. It's not like Tiley can shoot over here on a weekend, meet with his agent, work out some of the details face to face with the UI administration, and then jet back to Oz on the sly without anyone over there noticing. I think if he's still in this thing, he has to be totally reliant on whomever it is that represents him. Right up to the point where he's ready to sign on the dotted line. This ain't the sort of thing you can just do over Skype. If this is in fact the case, I don't mind waiting.

Maybe some of you internet sleuths need to find out who, or what firm, represents Tiley, maybe there's interesting there. :noidea:

Totally agree - Tiley is worth the wait to explore the possibility, especially if he hasn't really been in play during this whole George fascination. If it's not going to happen in the next couple of weeks, then Whitman should be our guy and we'll get going.

New Tate article: http://www.news-gazette.com/sports/...016-02-09/tate-hiring-ad-tricky-business.html

He confirms George declined, and certainly implies that Tiley's being considered and/or in discussions, with Whitman as the fallback.

I may be naïve, but I'm not buying the George story, I think there is more to it than "he's comfortable there and Boulder is awesome". I've lived in Denver now for 10 years, and am still surprised by the lack of interest in college sports. High school sports in Illinois get more coverage than the Buffs here in Denver. People in Boulder would rather run, bike or a million other things than follow CU sports. CU's facilities are par at best, and they are getting lapped in the PAC 12, with no obvious recruiting base to rely on. He's done a decent job here keeping basketball respectful, and renovating the football stadium, but in the next year or 2 the pitchforks will start to come out from the few CU people that still care.
Does he still feel burned from being passed over last time? Not enough money being offered? Or something else? Like I said, something doesn't sound right. I feel like a good sales pitch and some $ could have convinced him to jump ship to IL, because that CU boat ain't much better.

His kids and grandkids are there and his wife loves it. Maybe those things are what makes him comfortable there, not the job.

Hello, Mr. Khan.

The first thing the new AD needs to do is give both Cubit and Groce 2 year extensions with very low buyouts to at least give the perception they will be here. Groce should have one more year with tournament or bust, and he probably needs to make it comfortably. At least then both coaches are working with a "full support".

So Tiley has been so busy since early November, that he couldn't have been contacted to at least have some preliminary discussions about a job that he's supposedly interested in? I realize the Australian Open is a busy time of year for him, but that's in late January.

No no no. Everyone agreed giving Cubit the job and how it was done was a disaster. Why on earth would you do it again on the basketball side?

The new A.D. needs to make a strong decision one way or another.

That suggestion was nothing like what was done for Cubit.

The implication is that a decision was made to keep Groce, the extension is the "strong decision". I'm not sure an extension is needed since his contract goes through 2019, but it's probably better than the dreaded "vote of confidence". I think a simple 1 year extension would work in that case.

So no one pays attention but then they'll come out with pitchforks? Um what?

I think everyone here is misreading the tea leaves. We're assuming that, because the actual first choice is out of the running and Tiley is the consensus second choice out here in internet dreamland, that we must now be "in negotiations" with him. Meanwhile, what we know based on verified fact is that a decision is coming soon and only Whitman and Michael have survived the administration's process. Go back and read the Wurth N-G article from yesterday. It's all right there.

Whoaa! What's this? I haven't seen any such thing.

Maybe "verified facts" was a poor choice of words. But that article was very telling. It starts with:

"Leaks cause problems" (said Wilson).

"At least" two candidates were interviewed last week, Whitman and Michael. Note: Others no longer warrant mentioning, and this is not a "leak" (likely reference to the Shannon Ryan report from the previous week, and list of names mentioned therein, which included Tiley).

"We are making good progress. We are eager to announce the new athletic director. It should be coming soon (first time we've from the horse's mouth that something is about to happen). We attracted a good amount of attention from some very exceptional candidates (past tense, nod to people that did not get the job)" (said Wilson).

Look, is any of this a definitive statement that we are NOT pursuing Tiley at this point? No, I'm not saying that. But there are inferences that can reasonably be drawn, and I would say those do not suggest we're entering a period of complicated, prolonged, trans-pacific negotiations with a guy who would likely demand a seven figure salary and other concessions to come here. Rather, it sounds like the admin is about ready to call the ball on somebody closer to home.

Yeah, but we've already heard the "an announcement coming soon" thing several times in this search. I'll just wait until a press conference is actually announced before I believe a hiring is imminent.

Yeah, but we've already heard the "an announcement coming soon" thing several times in this search.

Not from Wilson, though. That's the difference. In every prior statement of hers before Monday, she said there was no timetable for an announcement and, in fact, she had never previously even confirmed that a final list of candidates had been drawn up by the committee. Whatever was behind it I don't know, but Monday's comments revealed there has been some kind of major development. One interpretation is that they've finally moved on from George and are looking to Tiley on an accelerated timetable. But I think the more likely reading is that either Whitman or Michael, who were specifically named in the article, has been selected.
