That article says Tom Michael and Sean Frazier are still in the running as well and both of those things have been negated in other articles.

Let's try not to jump to conclusions as a lot of these folks don't know all the facts and conflicting with other articles. "A change in job description" might have been a rumor this student heard and had no other legitimate reason for the other guys dropping out so they ran with it.

Or they made it up, we all know there is very little accountability in journalism nowadays and if you are vague enough you can get away with anything. "A change in job description" could be anything and is quite vague.

Yep. We were warned about mis-information / leaks late last week by Barb. I'm just waiting for an announcement at this point. I don't think anyone knows what is really going on at this point.

Patrick Chun can at least speak in front of others. Here's a video about the move to Conference USA, which is a plus for his tenure there.

I still have major concerns over his football and basketball hires, but I don't know a lot about FAU's history and how big of a hurdle they've had to overcome. Right now both programs are terrible.

Here's Patrick Chun dealing with Carl Pellini's resignation for drug use. I think he handles himself well here.

Here's Chun talking about his new football hire. He has the dreaded Urban Meyer seal of approval :). Anyway, also somewhat impressive press conference and search process, but the results aren't there yet.

Side note, I'm not sure "wanting the job" and "wanting to be here" are the biggest reasons to hire a candidate. I mean, I meet those for the Illinois football job and, well, yeah.

FAU is a weird place, like FIU it was founded in the 60s as a JR/SR only school where JC grads would go to get their BAs and BSs. It's a full 4 years now, but it still gets a lot of JC transfers and commuter students, so there's not much in the way of school spirit. And in the pecking order of FL sports, it's way down the list. Of course the remainders in FL are still pretty good. About the best they've ever done in FB is with Schellenberger. But overall irrelevance rules. A challenge for an AD.

Well, our last AD's record before he came here was great and look at who he hired? ;)
.

People keep saying this. Do you really think it was MT fault? He went after the exact, correct coaches in both FB (Summlin, etc.) and BB (Smart, Stevens, etc.).

MT just could not close...and in my opinion he could not close becasue of $$$ restrictions put on by "others". I mean, he hired excellent FB and BB coaches at his previous job. Why would he suddenly forget how to hire coaches?

The issue is we need a lot more $$$ than the going rate for a respective candidate to get them to come to this mess in either sport (or AD for that matter). And I seriously doubt we even offer a candidate's going rate.

And I do not believe the rumors we were willing to pay $3M for Sumlin. I seriously doubt we offered over $2M-$2.5M.

Don't love Patrick Chun, but he spent 15 years at Ohio St so something good had to rub off.

Anyone care to elaborate on this change in job description?

Chun overlapped at Ohio St. with Tom Herman for 7 months before he took the FAU job. Maybe he can bring Herman here.

"He spent the previous 15 years at Ohio State, where from 2009-2012 he provided oversight for the external relations division. He also served as the daily administrative liaison with the football team."

Don't like the sound of that. The high powered people dropped out after that, so I would guess that they diminished the power and authority of the job.

That's a distinct possibility. The other one could be that the description was changed to best match that of one specific target.

Isn't it time we hired an "Illinois guy"? Look at the recent results to see that we have nothing to lose in hiring Whitman - Groce, Beckman, Bollant, Law, Weber, Turner, Zook, Thomas. Give me someone who has a burning passion for this University BEFORE starting the job. I know that is not a guarantee of any success but at least the fans don't have to question where the AD's heart lies.

Um what? Did you really question Thomas' motive? Do you really think he didn't want to get Illinois great again? You do realize that was in his best interest as well right?

Most likely possibility: This is total BS and it never happened. Think about it. Who cares what the job description is? Anyone with an ounce of sense knows what an AD is tasked with.

This is also coming from a student newspaper at Wash U, and no other sources have reported anything about the job description changing. I'd take it with a huge grain of salt unless someone else confirms it.

The job listing was public at one point - if the job description actually changed I bet it would be reflected there.

I think the only thing that changed was you had to pronounce Illinois without the noise at the end. :thumb: Probably more than one candidate failed in that category during the interviews.

Um, did I say that?? I'm just saying that perception is extremely important in college athletics. Apathy is at an all time high among fans around here. Do you honestly think that an "outside" candidate understands this pain the way that Whitman (or even Michael for that matter) does? Whitman knows what winning and losing means at Illinois because he's lived it as a player. Fans perceive that an Illini guy is as disgusted as they are at all of the mediocre results. Is it true, maybe and maybe not but that is the perception.
