At worst, Cubit is a dead man walking with new AD. More likely that Cubit is a stand up guy who agreed to keep the program afloat while we hire an AD.

The real dagger to the program was the delay in releasing MT. Inexcusable.

Now that the university has bought some time do they hire the chancellor first then get the right AD.

If I had to guess, they'll get the AD first. Only because it would be the least consistent thing they could do.

There's no doubt the AD is coming first. That's already been made clear publicly. And the new AD will hire a football coach in December 2016, the program will fall apart the next two seasons because of the talent time bomb Cubit is helpless to avoid constructing, and that AD will then be a dead man walking because of public outcry over something that isn't his fault.

Sure is going to be an exciting few years isn't it?

Barb Wilson explained how the AD search would begin. First we will establish a search committee, who will in turn form a "assisted" search committee. The assisted search committee will be divided into 3 area....alumni, students and donors. Each of the 3 will form a search committee for members to serve. All 3 areas of the divided search committee will suggest candidates for the assisted search committee. At that time the leading candidates will each form a search committee for each candidate to research background, experience.,etc. Once this process begins to take shape, we will form the Progress Committee who will inturn "vet" each committee and report.

Hmm I thought keeping Cubit for two years was for stability and continuity?!?

I'm surprised nobody has pointed out (or maybe they did and I missed it) that Rutgers fired their AD and hired a new one in the same day. Granted, they don't have an interim chancellor. Apparently, that adds anywhere between two and ten months to the process.

Yea "search committees" are definitely the way that universities are going to nowadays. Especially with racial discrimination, lawsuits etc. There are a lot of pros to search committees however I feel like universities almost use them too much. We could have a great football coach candidate come in and interview however one of the committee members might not feel good about it and that possible candidate is lost. You're not going to please everyone but they feel they can. Search committees should really just be in the academic field not in athletics but with universities now, its likely they will do this for head coaching jobs, athletic directors etc. It's been happening at smaller universities, EIU for example but I feel its going to be the way of the future.

Speaking of this idea, I recall that when I was an undergrad at C-U, we were looking for a new football coach. The press conference was going to be at 10:00 am and my 9:00 class wasn't going to allow us to make it to a tv by 10:00, so one of the students asked our professor, who was on the Search Committee, who would be announced. He was very enthusiastic and pleased to be able to tell us about our new coach, Gary Moeller. I kid you not. Search Committees are not new to Illinois.

next years t shirts

its not "I" deal

(of course we use the orange and blue block I.)

doesnt the school have anyone that can WRITE A PRESS RELEASE.
our interim AD has to be an idiot to release that kind of comment
to the press. could have commended Cubit for keeping the team
together during a rough year, being a great community representative.
maybe even just a good guy that the team plays hard for... here i
thought I was for Interim not Ideal.

Wow.. I wonder if they used them on Zook, Beckman, Turner, I bet it wasn't used for Tepper when he was hired as HC but it really should be just for academic positions.

I think he was trying to tell everyone in clear terms that it wasn't his call.

Whose call was it then? All of this just screams, 'no one is in charge,' but clearly someone had to sign off on this decision. We're hearing Khan and many donors aren't happy about it, so it wasn't them. Kowalczyk may be trying to say it wasn't his idea. That only leaves Barbara 'I'm still learning about athletics' Wilson.

Or BOT. Regardless, the whole thing was a clusterf***, and yet, we made a decision before we even had everyone on the same page. So incredibly stupid.

That's exactly what it was. Does anybody really think Kowalcyzk would have made that comment if he had any say at all in this? He did what he was told to do and the fact that we can't even say with any certainty who it was who made the decision -or who 'they' were who made the decision is just indicative of the mess this whole thing has turned into. There's been no plan and there's been 10 plans in place since the presser for MT's firing. In the end they probably did what seemed like the least disastrous from someone's POV.

#422
I just don't get how keeping Cubit makes this job any more enticing to a new AD. Now he has the pressure of hiring a good football coach in probably a thinner candidate pool, with a less attractive team to sell. Obviously that's something that can be done, but and some people would like to hire their own guy from the start.

Much much much more critical is now he has to win back very angry donors and fans. THAT will be no easy task

That's the dagger to the program? It wasn't that 19 year stretch under Football Guy where we were the 6th worst program in all of the Power 5/BCS/whatever you want to call them conferences? It wasn't 4 more years of garbage under Thomas?

A dagger would indicate that there were something to kill. The football program has been a train wreck for 25 years. The basketball program has been a significant disappointment for approaching 10 years.

This wasn't a program on the verge of blowing up. It wasn't a good program. It was a dumpster fire for 19 years under Guenther, and Thomas kept throwing gas on it.

While I understand the point, that firing Thomas and Beckman at the same time would have been preferable, to think that somehow Illinois wouldn't have made a similarly poor decision seems like ignoring the history of this program and University.
