Yes. Even thinking Payton or Shanahan would come to Champaign is laughable.

These are NFL coaches. Super Bowl winning NFL coaches. They are not coming to coach at Illinois.

If you leave it at "They are not coming to C-U" I agree with you. But this thread isn't about them coming to coach, it is about them being considered as the AD. Still don't give it any credence whatsoever, but that is multiples more likely than them coming to coach. I don't want to say that there is any sort of a chance for fear of the gif onslaught :D

Wasn't it this week that administration hoped to have their guy?
Did I remember that correctly?

No, Wilson has consistently said that the idea is to be able to present the selected AD to the BOT at their meeting on 1/21. Presumably that means the choice will be made public a few days earlier. Killeen has said much the same thing, and both said this was the preferred schedule, though they would alter it if events dictated otherwise.

As AD? Are people taking crazy pills? I may be the only one, but what about Sean Payton or Mike Shanahan sounds like they would be a good AD? It sounds like both have trouble getting along with people that have money and sign their checks. Big name sure, likely happening no (so not sure why I am even worried about this). Not sure these guys are the people to run an entire Athletic department. Sean Payton also was a coach who oversaw and was suspended for a safety issue, not sure he is the guy to replace the guy who was fired for not knowing about all the safety issues going on.

January 4th does have some significance in that it was the date the job posting closes, and I think Wilson said no hire would occur before January 4th.

Here's the job posting:
Interviews may begin prior to the close of the search however a hiring decision will not be made until after January 4, 2016

So the 1/4 date wasn't just pulled out of thin air by those asking in this thread - it was first mentioned by the University. I'd be surprised if we don't start hearing some more rumblings here pretty soon.

Can't imagine any NFL people going to come here. Most of them make $5-7 million a year. Thomas made about $600,000 a year.

Plank is not someone that would get people excited, like the agent said. No experience, never hired a coach.

I'm not sure they fit into "legendary" status.
Shanahan won two Super Bowls and Payton won one. Payton was a Spare Bear in the strike season. Definitely legendary, but these aren't the droids we're looking for. :D

It's Jan. 5, which means Illinois can hire a new AD anytime now but a UI spokesperson said "there isn't anything new in the search."

The AD search committee has met several times but they are still "working expeditiously and thoroughly to identify top-quality candidates."

I really hope this is just standard spokesperson boilerplate and that we're not in fact still in the process of "identifying top-quality candidates." We need an athletic director, not "The One" foretold by the Oracle to lead mankind from its enslavement inside The Matrix. I mean, it can't possibly be this difficult, can it?

Translating this.. "We've met several times and gone over the 4-5 candidates that would seemingly unite the fanbase, alumni, and big donors. We really like the 2-3 really qualified ones.. but we don't want to simply do the logical thing.. let's think outside the box!"

Anyone else get that read or am I just too jaded now to think that the AD is going to be anyone except the 4-5 that have been discussed here?

Sounds like Phil Emery is running this search...In all seriousness sounds like we won't have an AD until when February???

I am not concerned about the amount of time this is taking. I am also happy that it has been kept under wraps to this point. I hope with the help of the search firm they are turning up some stealth candidates for consideration. We will never probably know all the people they approached but the time it's taking tells me they are at least trying. I'm hopeful still we get a deal changer... even if that means someone like Whitman is scrutinized more closely before being offered the job. One can only hope!

Totally concur, FWIW. Let's hope next news is who our new AD is.

http://www.news-gazette.com/sports/illini-sports/baseball/2016-01-06/ad-search-rick-georges-stance-hasnt-changed.html

Rick George says.. “I have not spoken to anyone from Illinois and I did not send my application in for the position,”

Well seeing as how he probably wouldn't have to send in his resume to get this job, and hopefully someone not from Illinois (but on Illinois' behalf) contacted him.. I can see how he'd say this ;)

Plausible deniability is the name of the game. Not saying we'll land George.

1 day that's what it took Texas a&m to get their new athletic director funny how that works no posting time or laws.

Well played, couldn't agree more
